Forever an O

A hat trick from Orient youngster Josh Koroma and a goal from Steven Alzate saw Leyton Orient travel home from Wales with all three points. In a week where the HMRC set a date for the club to be wound up after an unpaid tax bill, the O’s squad let the football do the talking.

A starting 11 which included seven academy products raced into a 2-0 lead with Alzate tapping in at the back post on his first team debut while Josh Koroma slotted home minutes later. With the troublesome pitch Newport grew slightly in proceedings but on the stroke of half time Sam Dalby slid in Koroma for his second.

With Newport looking for a route back into the game, Orient held firm into the second half and after wonderful work from Alzate saw the youngster win a penalty. Koroma stepped up and slotted home from the spot to become the youngest O’s player to score a hat trick in 132 years.

A troubling week of off field problems came to an end with a team showing heart, bottle and desire. A manager who wants to be in charge of the club, and the fan base which is united on the fight to keep Leyton Orient in business.

A side which had been decimated through injuries, suspensions and we all know what else. The youngsters have been the bright sparks in a troubling season with Alzate slotting home at the back post in the opening ten minutes. Orient had experience bodies which were helping the young lads through it.

In Josh Koroma, Orient had an outlet and a man who was a threat. The youngster created the first for Alzate before slotting home for number two after a fantastic through ball from strike partner Sam Dalby. The wind and horrendous playing conditions were providing a tricky obstacle but Newport failed to create too much in attacking areas.

Newport tried to rally but Grainger was only forced into a save from Marlon Jackson. 395 travelling fans made the journey to Wales hoping that the players, management and fans can continue to pull together despite problems out of their control. The players obliged with a third in first half stoppage time after a break from Dalby who squared unselfishly to Koroma who tapped home.

Orient were out early in the second half looking to adjust to the conditions once more with Newport undoubtedly getting a rocket from manager Graham Westley. Koroma should have won a penalty for the O’s after breaking through the Newport defence but referee Gavin Ward booked Koroma for simulation.

However, Orient were not to be denied a fourth goal and what a moment for Josh Koroma who grabbed his hat trick which sealed a wonderful win for the East Londerers.

The full reality of the situation that Orient are in finally hit home on Thursday night with the discussion of administration and liquation but at a time like this, Orient will always make you smile.

A club which has been with my family since the mid 60’s with my Dad starting following the O’s as a teen. 50 years down the line, I am in my 16th season supporting the O’s and would not like to think of a situation where there is no Orient on a Saturday. A situation which is similar to nearly every Orient fan, a family traditional where father’s take their sons, granddad’s take their grand children.

The football community has finally woken up to the state of unrest at Brisbane Road but just look around on Twitter or Facebook to what the club means to so many people. I for one know that Orient will always be in Bristow household, no matter what. Because Once an O, always an O…..

Stead’s Double Leaves O’s Three from Safety

Kevin Nolan’s return to Brisbane Road saw his Notts County side grab a precious three points in their search for survival. Nolan returned after being sacked by Leyton Orient last April and inflicted defeat on his former side as the O’s sit three points from safety. Jorge Grant and John Stead put County ahead before Orient pulled level through Paul McCallum and Teddy Mezague. However Nolan’s County were to have the last laugh when Stead clinched the three points  with six minutes remaining.

Fresh from their 3-2 win away at Plymouth on Tuesday, manager Danny Webb was forced into three changes. Both Nicky Hunt and Liam Kelly were suspended while Sam Dalby dropped to the bench. Teddy Mezague slotted in at the back while Nigel Atangana came in to the midfield and Paul McCallum started in attack.

Notts County  fought back to force a draw in injury time on Tuesday against Exeter made three changes. Thierry Audel dropped out through injury while Alan Smith and Curtis Thompson were named on the bench. Josh Clackstone, Shola Ameobi and Jorge Grant all came in to the starting 11.

Orient looked to start brightly, clearly gaining confidence from their win on Tuesday night. However they were dealt an injury blow when defender Tom Parkes was stretchered off after a clash with Shola Ameobi. Sam Dalby replaced Parkes as Orient had to reshuffle their back line, Callum Kennedy moved to center half while Sandro Semedo dropped to left back, Gavin Massey moved to left midfield with Sam Dalby partnering Paul McCallum in attack.

The first chance of the game came on 17 minutes from Orient’s in form striker Gavin Massey. After a quick throw out from Sam Sargeant, Massey flicked around his defender and ran at the County back line. Massey reached the byline crossing for Dalby and McCallum but a brilliant combination of blocks from Richard Duffy and Marc Bola kept the ball out.

County started to gain a foothold on proceedings with Orient struggling to get forward. Mark Yeates saw a free kick blocked before Nigel Atangana volleyed a Sandro Semedo cross wide for the hosts. Nolan’s men took the lead ten minutes before the break through route one play. A long kick by Adam Collin was poorly dealt with by Mezague and Kennedy, Jorge Grant pounced, nipping in ahead of Sam Sargeant and slotted the away side ahead.

Despite falling behind, Danny Webb’s Orient had recovered well in recent matches and neat play between Massey and Semedo saw the latter fire over the bar. As the half came to an end, the home side were pressing for an equaliser forcing a succession of corners with Richard Duffy nearly putting through his own net but  County held their lead at the interval.

With neither side making changes at the break, it was Nolan’s men who came out the traps the quickest, doubling their lead three minutes into the second half. Shola Ameobi held the ball up, laying off to Mark Yeates who looped a through ball to John Stead. Stead was quicker to the ball than Sargeant and poked the ball towards the goal, his shot clipped the bar, bouncing over the line to send County 2-0 up.

The home side needed an instant response and that is exactly what they got. Gavin Massey found Myles Judd on the right hand side, the youngster’s cross was headed towards goal by Nigel Atangana. The midfielder’s header clipped the bar but captain on the day, Paul McCallum was on hand to halve the deficit.

With Orient right back in the contest, they searched for an equaliser pushing men forward in attack. However, with the home side committing men high up the pitch, County posed a threat on the break wasting chances to make it 3-1. Shola Ameobi saw two efforts blocked  before John Stead wasted a glorious opportunity when he headed wide from six yards out.

Massey was a constant menace for County looking to get behind their back line, coming close when he cut in from the left but saw his curling effort parried away by Collin. But Webb’s men fought back level when defender Teddy Mezague fired home with nine minutes left, to create a grandstand finish.

But they always saw you are at your most vulnerable when you have scored, Orient learnt this the hard way when County grabbed the winner just three minutes later. Bola beat both Judd and Koroma down County’s left, his cross found Stead unmarked at the back post where he diverted the ball home.

Orient searched for another route back into the game but were unable to fashion a real clar cut opportunity in the dying minutes and fell to defeat to one of their relegation rivals, leaving them three points from safety.

The main difference today, was the experience that County were able to rely on and the poor defending which cost Orient once more. Stead and Ameobi bullied Orient’s back line all game, helping to relieve pressure when they were under the cosh. The experience in attack ultimately won County the game but you cannot under estimate the quality or more like the lack of quality defending shown from Orient.

It was clear that Orient were missing Liam Kelly, Nicky Hunt and Tom Parkes; a major blow to a side full to the brim of youngsters. A make shift back line with a youngster at right back, left winger at left back, left back at center half and a center back who’s played only a handful of games in English football. The full picture of the difficulty Orient have to preserve their football league status.

With Kelly out for another five games and Parkes out for the forseeable future, Orient will be relying on the youth to try and pull them through. Sitting three points from safety, Webb’s men clearly have the fight and passion for the relegation fight but the lack of quality is showing.

The key is still the next three games against Cheltenham, Stevenage and Newport County the results in those will be paramount for Orient’s future as a football league club.

The Late Late Show by Webb and Co

Sandro Semedo crashed home an injury time winner to move Leyton Orient closer to League Two survival away at Plymouth last night. The O’s came from behind twice to give them their first win in nine games and the first for Rookie Boss, Danny Webb.

The Pilgrims took the lead after just ten minutes when Ryan Taylor headed a cross back to midfielder Antoni Sarcevic who struck home. The promotion chasers were seeking a second but on the stroke of half time, Orient’s man of the moment Gavin Massey went on a  mazy run and struck the equaliser. Matty Kennedy curled home early in the second half to put Plymouth ahead before hitting the post just minutes later.

Substiute Nauris Bulvitis struck the post before Orient fought they way back once more. With two minutes left, Callum Kennedy’s cross fell to Massey at the back post where he fired the equaliser. With time ticking into added time, Orient grabbed a precious three points.  Massey’s run down the wing found Josh Koroma but his shot was blocked, the rebound fell to Semedo who fired home the winner to send 156 travelling fans in to ectasy.

After winning the Devon Derby 3-0 on Saturday, Plymouth boss Derek Adams named an unchanged side. Matty Kennedy, Ryan Taylor, Antoni Sarcevic and Jakub Sololik all continued after impressing in their debuts vs Exeter.

O’s boss Danny Webb made three changes to the side that grabbed a late point at Yeovil on Saturday. Yvan Erichot and Nigel Atagana missed out through injury so Callum Kennedy and Josh Koroma started after impressing from the bench on Saturday. Striker Ryan Liburd dropped to the bench with Sam Dalby starting in attack.

Plymouth were full of confidence with Graham Carey whipping in a delicious cross early on but under Danny Webb Orient have found a new sense of belief. Sam Dalby saw a header easily saved by Luke McCormick before midfielder Michael Collins had a tame effort from distance.

However, the Pilgrims took the lead after ten minutes, former O Gary Sawyer crossed for Ryan Taylor at the back post. Taylor, climbing over Tom Parkes headed back to Antoni Sarcevic who struck home. Despite opening the scoring Derek Adams was forced into an early change with Nauris Bulvitis replacing Sonny Bradley in defence.

Plymouth were getting into their swing, carving Orient up through midfield with some great movement between their attacking players. Yann Songo’O headed over from a Carey free kick but Orient still offered an attacking threat. First, good interchange between Sam Dalby and Josh Koroma saw the former have an effort saved by McCormick. Liam Kelly tested McCormick from distance before Ryan Taylor missed a great chance for the hosts. Matty Kennedy mazy run led to a cross for Taylor who swept over from four yards out.

Orient lacked discipline in the first half with Tom Parkes, Nicky Hunt and Callum Kennedy all picking up cautions with the latter injuring Sarcevic who was replaced by Ryan Donaldson.

With Webb’s side still in the game, the main outlet was once more Gavin Massey and just before half time, he produce another special goal. Picking the ball up on the left side just inside his own half, he progressed down the left flank. Reaching the penalty area he cut inside Songo’O and curled a delightful effort into the corner.

In stoppage time of the firsts half, Plymouth had two great chances to take a lead into the break. Centre back Jakub Sokolik volleyed over after Songo’O headed back at the back post before midfielder David Fox volleyed inches wide off Sam Sargeant’s post.

With the scores level at the break, all O’s fans knew the weakness straight after the restart, Josh Koroma had an early effort before the away sides frail defence fell again. Matty Kennedy who had caused Myles Judd problems all night, cut in from the left flank and curled past Sargeant to put Plymouth ahead.

Orient looked for an instant impact with Callum Kennedy crossing for Sam Dalby but the O’s youngster could only see his header fly over. The home side nearly wrapped up victory with an almost identical effort for their second. Matty Kennedy cut in from the left flank but this time his curled shot cannoned off the post to safety.

O’s boss Webb was in his fourth game in charge and has created a spirit and togetherness which continued with them searching for a leveller. Massey saw an effort saved after a neat one two with Michael Collins. Much like Saturday at Yeovil, Orient gained in confidence and were pushing men forward with Dalby and Koroma twice having shots on goal.

Then the games turning point after a corner fell to Bulvitis, his effort hit an O’s defender, crashed off the post and ran along the goal line. With the home side appealing, Sam Sargeant dived on the ball, quickly reacting to set the O’s away on a counter attack. Massey got behind the Plymouth back line, his cross found the unmarked Koroma at the back post but the youngster took a touch before his shot was blocked.

The belief in the men in red was clear to see and they equalised with two minutes to go. Callum Kennedy crossed from the left, Dalby flicked to Massey at the back post who fired under McCormick to level and send the 156 away fans into celebration behind the goal.

Orient could sense a winner as time ticked into stoppage time, Gavin Massey was on his bike down the right flank. He got behind the Plymouth back line, finding Koroma in the penalty area, the youngster saw his effort blocked but the rebound fell to winger Sandro Semedo. Semedo took one touch to set himself before crashing home the winner with the 156 going absolutely barmy in the away end, sealing Orient’s first win since Boxing Day.

win, a bloody win, just how good does it feel Orient fans? I tell you that no one of the 156 away fans will forget that night in a while especially the scenes in the away end when Semedo struck the winner. We all thought that we had earned a point and were delighted but to grab a late late winner saw limbs everywhere, delight on every bodies faces and a club that is now showing the fight for the badge that so many people hold so close to their heart.

Danny Webb the man who has brought back the passion, fight and desire that every O’s fan expects when they turn up. The team, who are creating chances, have come back twice in four days to earn four points, highlighting the spirit that he has created at Brisbane Road. Despite Plymouth wasting opportunities, I don’t think many people at Home Park last night could begrudge Orient at least point if not all three. There was only one team who were asking the questions in the final minutes.

As I sit travelling the five hours home, the question remains why do it to yourself? Well last night proved exactly why so many Orient fans live and breath the club. The scenes and celebrations from players,  fans and the management team all highlighting the passion they have for the club. I know for one, I don’t care one bit about the black eye suffered after Sam Dalby celebrated with the away fans after Massey’s equaliser.

Let’s stay grounded though we still remain the bottom two on goal difference with Cheltenham. The next four games are absolutely crucial starting with Notts County on Saturday. A game which sees Kevin Nolan return to Brisbane Road before Cheltenham Town visit a week later. Stevenage away and Newport away complete the quartet of games which Orient are hitting with some much needed confidence.

Anyway all I can say is, that is the best Valentines Present I could have asked for, a late win at Plymouth for my beloved Leyton Orient football club even after the black eye.

A massive game Saturday, see you all at Brisbane Road where the atmosphere should be fantastic. Orient have a chance of survival and that is the one thing that despite the position Orient always give you. That hope and dream………….

Gav Gives Glimmer of Hope

Gavin Massey’s finish two minutes from time gave Danny Webb his first point as Orient manager. The former Colchester winger fired home at the back post to earn Leyton Orient their first point of 2017. Yeovil took the lead on the stroke of half time when Francois Zoko pounced on a loose ball inside the box. Despite Orient lying second bottom, the away side continued to push for an equaliser and it duly arrived with two minutes left when Massey was on hand for his sixth league goal of the season.

Following their 1-1 away draw last weekend at Hartlepool, Yeovil manager Darren Way made two changes to his side. Alex Lacey and Matt Butcher dropped out in place of Darren Ward and Alex Lawless.

Following on from their disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Morecambe on Tuesday night, O’s boss Danny Webb made two changes to his line up. Ryan Liburd started in attack after coming on from the bench on Tuesday in place of striker Sam Dalby who dropped to the bench. Liam Kelly made his first start for Leyton Orient since 8th October with Victor Adeboyejo missing out.

With Orient looking to be positive at Huish Park they started well.  Danny Webb opted for a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation which allowed wingers Gavin Massey and Sandro Semedo to push forward. It was Orient who could have taken the lead early on, after a nice move Michael Collins found Nigel Atangana in the inside right position. The Frenchman cut back onto his left foot but his shot was palmed away by Artur Krysiak for a corner.

Yeovil beat Orient at Brisbane Road earlier in the season, with striker Tom Eaves bullying Orient’s two center halves. The former Bolton striker continued in the same vein at Husih Park but it was Francois Zoko who saw a tame effort saved by Sam Sargeant in the Orient goal.

With Kelly, Collins and Atangana in central midfield, the O’s finally had some structure and a solid foundation. Kelly’s drive and presence in the midfield was driving the O’s forward with him finding Ryan Liburd behind Yeovil’s defence. However the on loan Stevenage striker could only drag his shot wide of the mark.

The O’s have been looking to break quickly since Webb took charge and they wasted a glorious opportunity after 23 minutes. After a shot was charged down the ball fell to Semedo on the right flank, the winger drove into the Yeovil half. Gavin Massey was wide and free on the left side but Semedo somehow opted to go it alone but saw his effort blocked.

Orient looked to pass their way up the pitch but at times were their own worse enemies with loose passes being pounced on by Yeovil. The hosts were starting to grow in to the half as it edged nearer to half time and could have taken the lead. After a free flowing move Ben Whitfield fed right back Liam Shephard in but the full back could only hit the side netting.

The game was ebbing towards half time but for the third time on their travels this season, the O’s conceded on the stroke of half time. Tom Eaves who was a handful all afternoon for the O’s backline, controlled the ball on his chest, swivelled and shot at goal. Sam Sargeant saved his deflected effort but the rebound fell to Zoko who was quickest to react to put the Glovers ahead.

A similar story for the East Londoners who had the better of the chances but when you are at the bottom, you have to take those chances. Webb brought on Callum Kennedy in place of Yvan Erichot who struggled once again. Nicky Hunt moved to center back alongside Tom Parkes with Kennedy slotting in at left back. Paul McCallum replaced the ineffective Ryan Liburd eight minutes into the second half as Orient looked for impetus to gain an equaliser.

Eaves fired wide for the Way’s side after he was allowed space to bring the ball down inside the box. Orient needed to keep the score 1-0 but nearly conceded after Nigel Atangana lost possession but Ben Whitfield could only shoot straight at Sargeant. That was Atangana’s last contribution as Webb threw on Josh Koroma after 63 minutes as Orient moved to 4-4-2.

The O’s were finding it hard to push up the pitch with the game becoming very stop start, Eaves and Akpra Akpro fired wide for Yeovil as they looked to sew up victory but Orient remained in the game. Josh Koroma was lively down the right flank, his trickery was causing the home side problems however when presented with a chance at the back post, he slashed his shot over the bar.

The substitutions had given Orient momentum to push for an equaliser with Massey the prime architect, now playing alongside McCallum in attack. The O’s were the only side looking for a goal but it looked like it wasn’t going to be their day. However, after McCallum headed down at the back post, Liam Kelly missed his shot before Massey fired home to send the 151 travelling supporters into raptures behind the goal to bring Orient level.

With the scores level going into added time, the away faithful were urging their team to push for a winner. However the last chance fell to McCallum who could only glance his header wide of the target as Orient earned their first league point of 2017.

What a difference two weeks makes, you will be saying hang on a minute we have only picked up one point. But, two weeks ago, Orient looked doomed and dejected at Mansfield with a manager that was clear he didn’t want to be there. Yesterday, there was some passion, fight and desire shown by the players to play for the badge.

In Webb we have a manager that has instilled some believe in the group, let’s not forget a group with less experience than any other manager in recent months. However, he is getting them playing and believing in what he is trying to do. A point is not enough, that is what people may say. But you have to start somewhere, a late equaliser, will help to boost morale in the group who saw that everyone of the away support was with them yesterday.

Anyone at the game yesterday will tell you, Hats off Danny Webb, the three substitutions were bold, attacking and ultimately changed the game.

When was the last time we could have said that? Yvan Erichot was horrendous again and rightfully replaced at half time for Callum Kennedy. Ryan Liburd was ineffective in attack and was brought off with plenty of time left to give McCallum time to influence proceedings. And wait for it, we made our third change just after an hour, bringing on Josh Koroma for Atangana as we went 4-4-2 away from home pushing for a leveller.

Koroma showed what he is all about yesterday, a raw prospect but the trickery to cause problems and most importantly time to influence a game. There were many players who deserve a mention but Liam Kelly’s return was a massive boost. The calming head and the ability to bring possession out of midfield. Let’s not forget he is not fully fit yet but pleasing signs.

Plymouth away Tuesday, but I go there with more belief in the group and signs that there is a desire and passion to play for the badge on the shirt.

One point is how does Webb go at Plymouth? A game where we will be major underdogs, does he look more to the Notts County game on Saturday or look for points of Tuesday? Either way, I think despite Webb’s age and lack of experience he is slowly giving Orient fans some light at the end of the tunnel but is it too late?

Hoops Get Just Rewards at St James

Newcastle missed their chance to go back to the top of the Championship after Ciaran Clark headed a late own goal against QPR last night. JohnJo Shelvey gave the promotion hopefuls the perfect start, firing home after just 39 seconds. However Rangers quickly grew into the game and deservedly levelled just before half time thanks to Connor Washington.

Newcastle knew a win would take them above Brighton and back to the submit of the Championship with a win. Matt Ritchie looked to have secured that heading in a Issac Hayden cross nine minutes into the second half. The hosts had chances to kill of Rangers however with a minute to go Clark headed a Kazenga Lua Lua cross beyond Karl Darlow to give Ian Holloway’s men a point on Tyneside.

Fresh from their 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Oxford on Saturday, Magpies boss Rafa Bentitez made nine changes. Only Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez remained in the starting 11, Daryl Murphy led the line for the Magpies in the absence of Dwight Gayle while Karl Darlow returned in goal.

Ian Holloway made four changes to his side that lost 2-1 to Burton Albion on Saturday. Connor Washington and Jamie Mackie started in attack with Idrissa Sylla missing through injury while Kazenga Lua Lua dropped to the bench. James Perch started against his old club while Ryan Manning started in midfield. January signings Luke Freeman and Sean Goss were named on the bench.

qpr-starting-11

The game was barely 39 seconds old when JohnJo Shelvey fired Rafa Benitez’s men ahead. Isaac Hayden’s run down the left saw his cross headed out to Shelvey who was arriving on the edge of the penalty area. The former Swansea man unleashed a low drive which beat Alex Smithies in the Rangers goal to give Newcastle the perfect start.

qpr-on-breakThe Magpies started with a fast tempo with Yoan Gouffran next to test Smithies in the Rangers goal but his tame shot was easily gathered by the former Huddersfield keeper. Rangers set up in a 5-3-2 formation looking to hit their hosts on the break at every opportunity and nearly drew level on seven minutes. Jake Bidwell found Massimo Luonga on the left hand side and the former Swindon man cut back on to his right food and curled a shot agonisingly wide of the far post.

newcastle-droppingNewcastle were finding it difficult to create going forward with Shelvey and Hayden dropping short to receive possession. However the nervousness around St James Park was easily to feel especially when Rangers countered. Midfielder Pawel Wszolek wasted a wonderful chance when Connor Washington’s through ball found him but he delayed too long allowing Jamal Lascelles to clear the danger.

Rangers were creating by far the better opportunities and the willingness of both Mackie and Washington to run into the channels was helping the away side. Washington’s run in to the left channel should have created the leveller for Holloway’s men. His teasing cross found the late arriving Luonga however Darlow saved smartly down to his left.

Luonga had an effort from distance blocked but Wszolek was causing the home side all kinds of problems defensively. The Polish midfielder was forcing the Magpies back line into mistakes, linking up very well with Washington and Mackie. It was Wszolek persistence which helped Rangers level just before the break. His pressure forced a corner for his side, Ryan Manning’s delivery was only half cleared to Bidwell on the edge of the box. The left back’s shot fell kindly to Washington who tapped home to draw Rangers level.

newcastle-ritchie-swapped-wingsWith the sides level at the break, the home crowd were restless with the amount of poor mistakes through lack of concentration. Matt Ritchie swapped flanks in the second half looking to combine with Paul Dummett down the left. But it was Ciaran Clark who wasted the first chance of the half, heading over a Shelvey corner.

The wasting of possession in defensive errors was giving Rangers confidence, with Holloway telling his players to press the Newcastle defense. Wszolek was presented with a glorious chance to put Rangers ahead when Dummett poor control let in the Polish ace however Darlow saved smartly.

The home crowd was getting ever more restless but were back celebrating nine minutes into the second half. Hayden’s run in the inside right position saw his cross headed home at the back post by Matt Ritchie to restore their lead. The home side were looking to put the game to bed with Ritchie and Shelvey both having efforts blocked on the hour mark before Jamal Lascelles could only screw a shot wide from a corner.

Newcastle Side after Subs

qpr-after-subs

QPR side two subs

Benitez threw on Sammy Ameobi on in place of the ineffective Daryl Murphy, allowing Gouffran to play centrally with Ayoze Perez just off of him. Holloway threw on new signing Luke Freeman in place of Ryan Manning while former Magpie Kazenga Lua Lua replace Jamie Mackie in attack.

Rangers were thankful for Alex Smithies who twice prevented Newcastle from adding a third. First saving smartly from Gouffran then producing a fine bit of keeping against Perez who was one on one with him. But the more Rangers remained in the game, the more anxious the home side were becoming.

qpr-4-3-3Holloway threw on his deadline day signing Sean Goss in place of Darnell Furlong as he searched for an equaliser at St James. The move allowed his side to play 4-3-3 with Lua Lua moved to a left wing berth, allowing him to cut in. The mood on Tyneside was of nervousness which grew with every minute.

The anxious was merited as the clock ebbed towards 90, when Lua Lua cut in from the left hand side whipping in a cross. With only Washington in the penalty area, Ciaran Clark misjudged his header and Karl Darlow could only watched the ball sail over his head and into his own net. The goal sent the travelling Rangers fans into celebration, if they could see up in Gods.

The Rangers bench erupted with jubilation while the moans and groans of the home fans was clear to see. Neither side were able to create and had to settle for a point with Newcastle missing the chance to leap frog Brigthon ahead of the Seagulla clash at Huddersfield tonight.

Holloway’s men deserved a point of Tyneside, with on another day they could have had two or three in the first period. Newcastle missed the presence of Dwight Gayle in attack with Daryl Murphy pretty much non existent for much of the 66 minutes he was on the park for.

Newcastle host Derby County on Saturday and will be aware that Leeds and Brighton are breathing down their neck in 3rd and 4th respectively. Rangers’s point moves them up to 18th, with their performance pleasing Holloway in the away dug out. In Pawl Wszolek they have a player with a lot of potential.

All Square at the Riverside

Middesbrough and West Brom had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw last night. Former Boro man James Morrison fired the Baggies ahead finishing low from just outside the penalty area. Aitor Karanka’s men grew into the game as time went on and drew level when a flick from Marten de Roon found Alvaro Negredo who was caught by Gareth McAuley. Negredo stepped up and slotted home the equaliser.

Both sides pushed for a second goal with Ben Foster saving well from a Cristhian Stuani effort late in the first half before the Baggies struck both posts in the second half through Matt Phillips and Salomon Rondon. However neither side could force a winner leaving Middesbrough sitting in 15th while Tony Pulis’s men sit in 8th.

Fresh from their FA Cup 4th round victory over Accrington Stanley on Saturday, Karanka made seven changes. Only Ben Gibson, Bernardo, Fabio and Adam Clayton remained. Alvaro Negredo return in attack with Adama Traore back on the wing while Victor Valdes returned between the sticks.

With no FA Cup game on Saturday, Tony Pulis named an unchanged side from his sides 2-0 victory over Sunderland 10 days earlier. Saloman Rondon led the line with support from Matt Phillips and Nacer Chadli on the flanks. Former Boro men James Morrison and Chris Brunt also started for the Baggies. January signing Jake Livermore was on the bench.

In a fast start from the away side, Pulis’s men were quick to try and gain the initiative and they duly did with just six minutes on the clock. After a free kick was cleared to the edge of the Boro penalty area, James Morrison was unmarked and fired beyond Victor Valdes to put the visitors ahead.

The away side continued with their high pressing with Matt Phillips almost creating a second after a fine run down the left but his cross was blocked by Antonio Barragan. Next to go close for the Baggies was another former Boro man in Chris Brunt but his dipping right foot volley only nestled on top of Valdes’s net.

Boro had struggled in the early running but were gifted a chance to get back into the game. Martin de Roon was found in the pocket just in front of West Brom’s back line, his flick around the corner found Negredo. The Boro striker’s run was halted by Gareth McAuley who was to have adjudged to brought him down. A soft decision which incensed Tony Pulis in the visitors’ dugout, Negredo stepped up a drew Boro level.

The goal seemed to wake up the hosts who were unlucky not to be awarded a second penalty. Cristhian Stuani cut in from the left flank inside the box and looked to have been brought down by Allan Nyom but referee Stuart Attwell waved away appeals.

The Baggies were sitting deeper looking to absorb Boro’s possession and hit them on the counter attack. The pace of Matt Phillips, James Morrison and Nacer Chadli was a danger for Boro with the three combining to set Rondon away but a brilliant recovery from Adama Traore prevented the Baggies no 9 from shooting.

Traore was a threat down the right hand side, twice whipping in delicious crosses but no Boro player was able to get on the end of them. The movement in the midfield with De Roon and Adam Forshaw was starting to provide fruition and Boro nearly took a lead to the break. A cross from Traore was touched towards his own goal by Allan Nyom but a smart save from Ben Foster kept the scores level.

Victor Valdes was called into action on the stroke of half time when a Brunt free kick found the head of Craig Dawson but Valdes saved smartly to his left.

The home side continued the second half in the same vein pushing the Baggies back but it was the away side who should have regained the lead ten minutes after the restart. A fine run from Chadli in the inside right position saw his whipped cross find the head of Matt Phillips but his header cannoned off the post. The rebound fell to Rondon who shifted the ball onto his left foot but just like Phillips his shot found the far post and bounced away to safety.

Tony Pulis introduced both James McClean and Hal Robson- Kanu from the bench looking to find a second but it was Boro who went close. An Adam Clayton cross found De Roon but Foster tipped his header over.

The game was very open with both sides attacking trying to find a second goal, Boro went close through Gibson and Negredo but both efforts were brilliantly blocked inside the Baggies penalty area. Chris Brunt saw an effort from distance tipped over before Phillips dragged a shot wide of the mark. Boro threw on Patrick Bamford and Rudy Gestede however it was Robson-Kanu who had the last effort of the night but it was comfortably saved by Valdes.

“It’s Really Important the Fans Stick with the Team”

Leyton Orient manager Andy Edwards has urged the fans to stick with the team in their fight for  League Two survival. The O’s languish in 21st position, just two points above the relegation zone with Edwards keen that the club pulls together to ensure they retain their Football League Status.

  • League Record – P26  W7  D4  L15  F28  A39
  • Away Record – P12  W4  D3  L5  F16  A19
  • Last Away Results – LLLLWLLW
  • Form in last eight (league) – W2  D1  L5  F8  A16
  • Form in all competitions – LLLDWLWLLLW

The O’s are embroiled in a relegation fight after another season of turmoil in E10 but Edwards knows that the most important part come the end of the season is “making sure we stay in this division come May”Speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today (Friday) Edwards stated “the fans role can be massive, we know how difficult it has been, there is a lot of frustration and unsettlement but it is really important they stay with team and the team give them something to cheer about”.

  • Have failed to score in nine league games – three away
  • Only failed in one of their last five games (4-0 vs Exeter, 02/01/16)
  • Have failed to score in two of their last three away games
  • Only scored two or more in 7/26 games and 5/12 away games
  • Only scored two ore more in one of their last 10 games (3-2 vs Crawley, 26/12/16)
  • Have scored 17 of their 28 goals in the second half

Orient’s game last weekend at home to Morecambe was postponed due to a frozen pitch but only Accrington and Newport gained on them. The O’s are winless in 2017 after three consecutive losses and Edwards knows that it is a vital game at Mansfield tomorrow, “the players want to playing games, it another tough one, but they are all tough at the moment. We play one of Steve Evans sides, they will certainly be no fools, it will be a real test”.

  • Both teams have scored in 14 of their 26 games and eight of their 12 away games
  • Both teams have scored in four of their last five games
  • Four of their seven wins have been by just one goal
  • Nine of their 15 losses have been by just one goal
  • Have only led in one of their last six games

Orient face Steve Evans for the time since their League One play off final defeat to Rotherham in 2014. Edwards on Evans “he has had success wherever he has been, whatever club he has gone to he has brought success. He has given Mansfield a lift”.

  • Orient record against current top half – P15  W2  D3  L10  F13  A25
  • Away record – P8  W2  D2  L4

Goalkeeper Alex Cisak understands the importance of the game at the One Call Stadium tomorrow, “we need to go on Saturday and get a win. We are in a relegation battle, there are no excuses, we need to kick on and get a result. Speaking to leytonorient.com the Austrailian was frustrated that his side couldn’t respond to their defeat to Portsmouth last weekend but a couple of weeks on the training pitch has helped.

  • Only kept four clean sheets in the league  – two away
  • No clean sheet in their last six – conceding 13 goals
  • Kept one clean sheet in last 10 – 1-0 vs Accrington, 10/12/16
  • No clean sheet in last four away games, only one in last nine (3-0 vs Colchester, 12/11/16)

Cisak highlights that the side has been working on defending in training, “we haven’t defended well all season, we have been conceding too many goals so we have been a lot of work on that. We also worked on our finishing so hopefully it all comes together tomorrow”

  • Have conceded two or more in four of their last five games
  • Have conceded two or more in three of their last four away games
  • Have conceded 27 of their 39 goals in the second half – including 15 of 19 away
  • No team in League Two has conceded more goals (11) between minutes 46-60

With their rearranged game against Morecambe set for February 7th, Orient play seven games in the month which Cisak knows could be key”if you can get a couple of wins on the go, you can get some momentum with games coming thick and fast, it could be a  good month for us”.

  • Record scoring first – W6  D2  L1        Away  W3  D2  L1
  • Have only lost one of their last 19 games – W16  D2  L1                                                   (loss at Doncaster 3-1, 26/11/16)

  • Record conceding first – W1  D1  L14       away W1  L4
  • Have only won one of their last 27 games – W1  D3  L23    (3-0 away win vs Hartlepool, 22/10/16)
  • Have only won one of their last 20 away games – W1  D6  L13

Mansfield host Orient tomorrow, on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in the Checkatrade trophy on Tuesday night. It was the Stags first defeat of 2017 but they remain unbeaten since Boxing day in the league. Mansfield last league match saw them come from behind against Cambridge United last weekend to move to within three points off the play off places.

  • 12th on 37 points
  • League Record – P27   W9  D10  L8   F29  A30
  • Home Record – P14  W5  D5  L4  F15  A10
  • Last home results – LWWDLDWWL
  • Form in last eight (league) – W3  D3  L2  F8  A5
  • Form all competitions – LWDWWWDLLD

Midfielder Joel Bryom felt his side controlled proceedings at Cambridge, speaking post match to mansfieldtown.net “I though it was a good performance, in the second half we scored at good times and saw the game out well”. The Stags have only lost two of their last eight and Byrom is keen for his side to continue with the same type of performance “that is the standard we are looking to get in week in week out. Not many teams have come to Cambridge and taken three points. They have been on a great run since November so it was a great three points”.

  • Have the joint best defensive record at home in League Two with Yeovil and Wycombe – conceding just ten goals
  • Have kept eight clean sheets – five at home
  • No clean sheet in their last two
  • But have kept four clean sheets in six games in 2017
  • Kept two clean sheets in their last three home games

Manager Steve Evans was appointed in November and has taken his side from 19th to 12th, since his appointment Mansfield have taken 18/33 points. Evans has looked to add to his squad in January, speaking to mansfieldtown.net on Thursday, “we are all working hard to get players here, the chairman has bent over backwards to try and make things happen. We have an excellent group, we want to strengthen the competition in certain areas”

  • Have failed to score in ten league games (5 home) – only Notts County (11) have failed to score in more
  • Only failed to score in one of their six games in 2017
  • Have scored in their last four home games
  • Have scored two or more in only seven of 27 League games
  • But have scored two or more in three of their last six games

Despite the defeat on Tuesday, Evans referred back to their win last weekend, “the boys have worked hard in their preparation for every game, we echoed that after Cambridge, we won a game, no big celebrations. We have to go back and work hard on the training pitch”. He continued “we prepare properly to make sure players are focused and try to get competition around the pitch We are slowly getting it, we have come along way from 19th, we can look up and see the play offs, every game is vital none more so than Saturday”.

  • Both teams have scored in 13 of their 27 league games and six of their 14 home games
  • Both teams have scored in their last two games
  • Only five of their nine wins have been by just one goal
  • Only four of their eight defeats have been by just one goal
  • Three of their last four win have been to nil

With Mansfield chairman issuing a buy one get one free ticket offer, the Stags are hoping for a bumper crowd at the One Call Stadium. Evans stated “it is fantastic for the players, they get the benefit, there is nothing better than the supporters right behind you. I have come here as an opposing manager, when the fans get behind the team it is great. We need them if we are going to have a run into the playoffs”

  • Have scored 22 of their 29 goals in the second half including 14 of their 15 home goals
  • No team has scored more goals between minutes 46-60 in League Two (10/29) and 8/15 home goals
  • Have conceded 19 of their 30 goals in the second half – including 12 in the final 15 minutes of games
  • Mansfield would sit 8th if games finished on 75 minutes

Evans described Orient as “a formidable wounded animal”, the Mansfield boss stated “they have one of the best squads on paper in the league, nothing is ever won on paper but they are capable and we have to be ready for the stern test that they bring”.

  • Record against current bottom half – P15  W8  D5  L3  F20  A11
  • Home form – P8  W5  D1  L2

Evans is aware that Orient’s performances have shown more passion since Andy Edwards’s appointment but understands the prize on offer, “they have good players, by evidence and footage they have gone up a notch for their new manager, they will come here whole hearted, they have individuals who can play but we know the rewards for ourselves. We could be bouncing into the top eight and nine, we are only going to get stronger as the season continues, it is a relatively new team and one that can only get better”.

  • Record scoring first – W8  D5  L1        home W5  D2
  • Have only lost one of their last 21 league games – W12  D8  L1                                                         (Carlisle 5-2 away, 26/11/16)
  • Are unbeaten in their last 34 home league games scoring first – W25  D9
  • Last lost at home in the League when scoring first – 21/12/13 – Accrington 3-2

“I am Ready to Roll my Sleeves Up”

Leyton Orient midfielder Sammy Moore insists he is more than up for the challenge of keeping his side in League Two. Moore returned to the O’s this week after a six month loan spell with Dover Athletic and is keen to hit the ground running at Portsmouth tomorrow afternoon.

  • Sit 21st on 25 points
  • League Record  – P25 W7 D4 L14  F27  A37
  • Away Record – P11  W4  D3  L4  F15  A17
  • Last away results – LLLWLLW
  • Form in last eight league games – W2  D1 L5  F7  A15
  • Form all competitions (most recent first) – LLDWLWLLLW

Moore goes straight into the squad ahead of the trip to fourth placed Pompey and insists that he is delighted to be back. Speaking to leytonorient.com “it is brilliant to be back, I had a good loan spell at Dover but now the time is right to come back and hit the ground running to try and pick up some wins”. Despite the position Orient find themselves in, Moore is looking to brighten the mood around Brisbane Road “there is some good talent here, we just have to find a way of winning. I have come back to bring some life to the place and give some confidence and belief to the team”.

  • Have kept just four clean sheets in 25 league games
  • Only Notts C (2) and Cheltenham (3) have kept less in League Two
  • Without a clean sheet in last five games
  • Only kept one clean sheet in their last nine – (1-0 vs Accrington, 10/12/16)
  • Without a clean sheet in last three away games – keeping just two in 11 away league matches this season

Moore left Orient in August when they sitting comfortably in the table however results have left Orient just four points above the relegation zone. But Moore knows that despite their position, “it’s football we have to get on with it. There are lots of games left to pick up points, we have a good nucleus here. The main thing was to add some competition in there. I am hungry to do well and want to do well just like the fans and that starts Saturday”.

  • Orient have taken just 18 points from 60 available since the end of August
  • Failed to score in nine of 25 League games – only Exeter (10) have failed to score in more
  • Failed to score in two of last five matches – both away from home
  • Failed to score in four of their last six away games in all competitions
  • Only scored two or more goals in a game in one of their last nine games
  • Both teams have scored in 13 of their 25 league games, seven of their 11 away games and three of their last four games
  • Record against top half teams – P14  W2  D3  L9
  • Away record – P7  W2  D2  L3

Orient fell to their second successive defeat against Barnet last weekend and manager Andy Edwards knows that the challenge of Portsmouth is a big one. Edwards was disappointed with the manner of the goals conceded against Barnet and insisted that the first goal was a big blow. Speaking to leytonorient.com on Friday “the goal on the hour mark was tough and we didn’t give ourselves a chance as we conceded the second so quickly”

  • Have scored 17 of their 27 goals in the second half of games
  • Their last two goals and three of their last six have been scored in the second period
  • Ten of their 15 away goals scored have been in the second half
  • Only one of their last nine away goals has been scored in the first half
  • Have conceded 26 of their 37 goals in the second half – including 12 of their last 14
  • No team has conceded less first half way goals than Orient (3)
  • Orient have trailed for 157 minutes in their last three games

Orient won at Fratton Park last season and Moore is hoping his side and recreate a similar performance tomorrow, “it doesn’t come much tougher , they will be a strong test. We went there last year and won 1-0. It was a great team performance, we need to replicate that on Saturday. We need points quickly as we are in a dog fight and I am ready to roll my sleeves up and give 100%”

  • Record scoring first – W6  D2  L1    Away W3  D2  L1
  • Only lost one of their last 19 league games scoring first – W16 D2  L1
  • Defeat came at Doncaster, 3-1, 26/11/16
  • Have only lost one of their last 14 away league matches – W8  D5  L1

Edwards is hoping that his players can step up to the occasion “it is a real tough one for us, it is a good game for the players with the size of stadium and the amount of fans. They are flying high again, but it is a game we look forward to. They have some exceptional players and a squad full of depth but we will give everything we have got”.

  • Record conceding first – W1  D1  L13   Away  W1  L3
  • Have lost six of their last seven games conceding first
  • Their only win was a 3-1 win at Hartlepool, 22/10/16
  • Have won just one of their last 26 league games – W1  D3  L22
  • The win at Hartlepool was their only win in their last 19 away league matches              – W1  D6  L2

Porstmouth head into tomorrow’s clash with Orient on the back of a 3-1 away defeat to promotion rivals Doncaster Rovers. It was Pompey’s first defeat in six as they look to bridge the gap between themselves and the top three. Paul Cook’s men sit just four points behind third placed Carlisle as they look to force their way into the automatic places.

  • Sit 4th on 42 points
  • League Record – P25  W12  D6  L7  F38  A25
  • Home Record – P11  W6  D2  L3  F23  A10
  • Last home results – WDLWWLLDL
  • Form in last eight league games – W4  D2  L2  F10  A8
  • Form in all competitions (most recent result first) – LWDWDWLWDWWL

Cook was very disappointed with the start his side made at the Keepmoat in their last outing. Speaking to portsmouthfc.co.uk the first ten minutes we never started the game, for a big game against the league leaders live on sky, we didn’t show the game any respect. You couldn’t make it up we lacked aggression in our game”.

  • Only Wycombe (8) have conceded less goals at home than Portsmouth
  • Have kept 11 clean sheets in 25 games- the most in League Two
  • Only Yeovil (7) have kept more clean sheets at home than Portsmouth (5)
  • Have kept four clean sheets in their last six games
  • Have kept four clean sheets in their last five home games in all competitions

However despite falling behind, Kai Naismith leveled for Pompey who were more than a match for Rovers, “after the first 10 minutes and the goal, I thought we were excellent and took control of the game. We dominated a very good side right up until half time. But to lose 3-1 to say we are not happy is a under statement”. He added “we have the ability to self destruct if we give the ball away as cheaply as we do. We are about being positive and aggressive but some of the passes and decision making from the lads was poor” stated Cook

  • Have failed to score in five of the 25 league games – only one at home
  • Have failed to score in 2 of their last five games
  • Only scored two or more in one of their last seven games – 3-2 away at Newport
  • Both teams have scored in 12 of their 25 games, six of their 11 home games and just two of their last six games

With just under half a season remaining Cook knows his side need to continue in their beliefs and keep going with plenty of points left on offer. The main concern for Cook was “concentrating on ourselves, when you want success you have to go and get it. If you come off the pitch waiting for someone to lose you are not in a good place”. Continuing in his interview with portsmouthfc.co.uk “We have got to grasp it with games, we have 12 at Fratton and nine away, the league table doesn’t show it today but in my opinion we have it in our own hands”.

  • Have scored 20 of their 38 in the second half
  • Have netted 15 goals (8 at home) in the last 15 minutes of games- the most in League Two
  • Portsmouth would sit 11th if games ended on 75 minutes – they have gained 10 points in the final 15 minutes of games
  • 16 of their 23 home goals have been scored in the final 15 minutes of both halves (27/38 total)
  • Only 11 of their 38 goals have been scored by strikers, 22 have come from midfielders

Midfielder  Carl Baker understands that tomorrow’s game is one that his side are expected to win against a side struggling at the bottom of the table. Speaking to portsmouthfc.co.uk earlier today “if we want to get promoted automatically this season then these are the fixtures you have to take all three points from”.

  • Record against current bottom half teams – P12  W4  D4  L4
  • Home record – P5 W2  D1  L2

Baker started against Orient earlier in the season and acknowledges that they will offer a test tomorrow, “they gave us a really good test at their place and you can tell they have a good side when you look at the players they’ve got”. But Baker expects Orient to adopt similar tactics to most teams visiting Fratton Park this season, “I’m sure they will look to sit behind the ball and make life difficult for us. It important we stay patient and keep believing we can get the opening goal because it forces them to come out”.

  • Record scoring first – W8    home W4
  • Have kept a clean sheet in their last 10 games scoring the first goal
  • Have only lost one of their last 21 league games – W18  D2  L1 (Plymouth 2-1, 16/04/16) – keeping 15 clean sheets
  • Only lost one of their last 21 home league games – W17  D3 L1

Cook has urged his players to “stand up and see what we can do for the fans” acknowledging the great support in recent weeks. But Cook is not under estimating Orient tomorrow, “the games are tough for everyone, if you don’t respect your opposition at any level of football then you will get beat. Orient have some fantastic players, they have had a lot of disruptions in their season”. Important for Cook is “to concentrate on each fixture as it comes along. We will pick teams to wins games and if we can do that on Saturday in a tough game then we will be in a healthier position”.

  • Record conceding first – W4  D3  L7          home W2 D1 L3
  • Have conceded first 14 times this season – 11 times in the opening 30 minutes of matches
  • Have lost their last three home matches
  • But no team in League Two has taken more points (15) after conceding the first goal in a match

Team News

Leyton Orient will be without  Liam Kelly, Robbie Weir and Sam Dalby who all remain sideline through injury. Midfielder Sandro Semedo returns to the squad after missing the last two matches while fellow midfielder Sammy Moore is available after returning from his loan spell.

Curtis Main is the only absentee for Portsmouth with Paul Cook stating to portsmouthfc.co.uk “we will let the team do the talking, by Saturday the fans should be happy with the team they see on the pitch”.

Head to Head- Leyton Orient 13     Draw    13       Portsmouth 16

  • Orient have won six of the last seven meetings
  • It was Portsmouth first victory since 1996

Santos at the Double as O’s Hit for Three

Two second half goals from new signing Ricardo Santos helped move Barnet into the play off places. Santos struck twice in the space of three second half minutes to put Barnet on their way to victory at Brisbane Road. The first he tapped home following a fumble from O’s keeper Alex Cisak before converting a low cross from Nana Kyei just minutes later. Paul McCallum headed home from a corner with 11 minutes left but Curtis Weston wrapped up victory in stoppage time.

Following their heavy defeat at Exeter on Monday, manager Andy Edwards made two changes to his side. Teddy Mezague returned from injury in place of Myles Judd as the defence reshuffled. While Josh Koroma was handed a start with Ollie Palmer dropping to the bench.

After beating the then league leaders Plymouth on Monday, the interim management team of Rossi Eames and Henry Newman named an unchanged side. Ricardo Santos continued in defence after his £100,000 move from Peterborough this month. While Simeon Akinola partnered top scorer John Akinde in attack.

barnet-starting-11-vs-orient

Both sides looked to push forward in the opening exchanges with Barnet creating the first opportunity. After Michael Collins lost possession in the midfield, Curtis Weston crossed but the ball flashed just in front of John Akinde at the back post.

Orient were playing with Collins just behind Paul McCallum in attack with the former Huddesfield looking to create. His ball to Josh Koroma on the left saw the youngster cut in but Jamie Stephens saved his effort but Nigel Atangana’s follow up was blocked. The save was Stephens last action with the keeper forced off through injury; Josh Vickers replaced him.

The game started to settled down and it was the busy Collins who nearly struck the opener. After nicking the ball in midfield, Collins advanced to the Barnet area but his fierce 20 yard shot was tipped around the post by Vickers. The Bees responded from a quick free kick, Mauro Vilhete cut back on to his right foot, his cross found Akinde at the back post but his header back across goal evaded his strike partner Simeon Akinola.

barnet-out-of-possession

Eames and Newman ensured that when their team lost the ball, they reverted to a 4-4-1-1 formation with Akinola sitting behind Akinde giving them extra man in the middle. As soon as play turned above Akinola was away supporting Akinde, with this almost creating the opening goal. A ball forward found Akinde, he chested to Weston in midfield, Weston’s ball behind Orient’s defence found the run of Akinola who forced Cisak into a fine save down to his right.

Barnet were beginning to get on top with Akinde causing Orient all kinds of problems at the back. The front man had too much strength and power for Tom Parkes, he advanced in to the penalty area, his initial shot was blocked before he inadvertently knocked the ball out on the rebound. Within minutes Akinde was at it again, shrugging off Yvan Erichot to leave a one on one with Cisak but Barnet’s top scorer hit his effort wide.

Cisak was called  into action again when he had to tip a Mauro Vilhete effort around the post after the wing was allowed too much space to advance into the penalty area. However the sides went in level at the break.

After the break, the game opened up but Gavin Massey’s mazy run could only see the former Colchester winger fire over. However, the danger was clear to see with the Bees pace and power on the break causing Orient problems. Akinde’s run forward was picked out but his cross into the center was headed just wide by Vilhete as Barnet pushed for the opener.

Just past the hour mark, the Bees seized the advantage and took the lead. Following a corner, O’s keeper Alex Cisak fumbled collecting the cross leaving Ricardo Santos the easy opportunity to slot home from close range. The Bees were buzzing after taking the lead and doubled their lead just three minutes later by Santos. After great work on the left by Nana Kyei saw the youngster easily beat Collins before crossing to Santos to turned home.

Edwards threw on Ollie Palmer and Ulrich Nnomo in search of a response from his side. Palmer saw an effort blocked for a corner before they did pull one back. A Callum Kennedy corner found the head of Paul McCallum who beat Vickers to give Orient a hope of rescuing something from the game.

However Orient struggled to create in the final ten minutes with Barnet wrapping up victory in stoppage time. A break away saw former Orient loanee Jamal Campbell Rice strike the bar leaving Curtis Weston with an easy chance to slot home, inflicted Orient’s second defeat of 2017.

Another defeat, the second of 2017 and the number will undoubtedly grow in the rest of the season. The question on everybodies lips on exiting Brisbane Road yesterday, was how many would Portsmouth score next weekend?

A fair few you would expect after the defending so far in 2017 in evidence from O’s back line. Where do the problems lie? I don’t think anybody has enough time to list all of the problems from top to bottom at Brisbane Road. The main one currently is the players are not good enough and the squad is unbearably thin. There is no depth in the squad, I appreciate that Robbie Weir and Liam Kelly are both injuried but the same holes in the squad have been there since pre season.

Orient went one up front yesterday and I pretty sure that if Cavasin or Hessenthaler had done that, they would be majorly cristized. But with Collins behind McCallum it did offer something going forward but obviously never enough to beat Barnet. Josh Koroma was bright and lively on the wing, showing Sandro Semedo how to do the basics right.

With news of Bechetti’s lost of interest in the club and him wanting to sell Orient , it should only be a good thing. Andy Edwards stated post match that they will have to work with this group and he has tried to bring in players but they have gone to other clubs. Bechetti’s experiment has been a major fail, relegated a club from the third tier then seeing them very close to dropping through the non league trap door.

Orient need points and points fast, I don’t care how we get them or where we get them. But the ultimate aim is to preserve our football league status because at the current moment it is under severe jeopardy. The confidence has been ripped from the side after two positive results over Christmas, results I couldn’t care less about the performance as points is all Orient need at the moment. The squad looked dejected when ever we go behind taking just four points from a possible 15 games conceding the first goal.

Anyway, good news Portsmouth away next weekend, but Orient need to pick themselves up from another defeat to show some fight, passion and commitment in front of their supporters next week. If we lose which I expect most Orient fans are expecting, I want to see my team fight and play for the badge on the front of the shirt. They can move on at the start of the season, supporters will always be left…..

“The Home Form has Improved and Hopefully We can Carry it on”

Leyton Orient defender Myles Judd is hoping his side can bounce back from their 4-0 defeat against Exeter on Monday. The O’s had taken four points over Christmas until the trip to Devon but the O’s academy graduate is looking for his side to continue their improving home form against Barnet tomorrow.

  • Sit 20th on 25 points
  • League Record – P24  W7  D4  L13  F26  A34
  • Form last eight (league) – W2  D1  L5  F7  A14
  • Form all competitions (most recent first) – LDWLWLLLW
  • Only won two of 13 games against top half sides – W2  D3  L8
  • Won none of six games at home – D1  L5

17 year old Judd made his league debut back in November and has been a regular at right back ever since. Judd is one of many Orient youngsters being given an opportunity to shine by manager Andy Edwards who is looking to steer his side away from the relegation zone. Speaking earlier to leytonorient.com Judd is enjoying the experience  “I am really enjoying working with Andy and Danny in the first team. Danny has been my coach for the last four years and Andy has always been around so it helped me settle in nice and quickly”.

  • Have kept just four clean sheets in 24 league games
  • Without a clean sheet in their last four
  • Kept just one clean sheet in last 11 home games – 1-0 Accrington, 10/12/16
  • Have only kept two clean sheets in the 16 games since reverse fixture vs Barnet

Judd who has made the step up from academy football stated “feeling settled in the first team environment, all the senior boys have been great in making me feel welcome”. Judd has found the transition tough “it is certainly faster paced and more physical but I feel I am progressing with every game I play”.

  • Have failed to score in nine of 24 league games – only Exeter (10) have failed in more
  • Failed to score in six of their 13 home league games – most in League
  • Failed to score in two of their last four games but scored in their last three home games
  • Only scored two or more in seven of their 24 games and two of their 13 home games
  • Have only scored two or more in three of their last 17 league matches

The 4-0 defeat to Exeter on Monday was Orient’s first in three games and Judd was disappointed with how his side started the new year but is looking ahead to Barnet, “hopefully we can bounce back from that defeat and keep our recent good run at home”. Orient are unbeaten in their last three home games after setting a club record of eight straight defeats with Judd hoping to build on their recent results “it has been better at home so we need to keep that going for as long as possible”.

  • Home Record – P13  W3  D1  L9  F11  A17
  • Last home results (most recent first) – DWWLLLLLLLL
  • Only Exeter (9) have scored less at home
  • Only Notts County, Accrington and Stevenage have led for less at home
  • Only Stevenage (11) have conceded first at home than Orient

Andy Edwards was upset with the manner of the defeat in Devon on Monday and the failure of his side to build on their previous two results. Speaking after the loss to leytonorient.comit wasn’t good enough, the last 4-5 weeks we have focused on being hard to play against and we wasn’t that today”.

  • Both teams have scored in 12 of their 24 games and only five of their 13 home games
  • Have scored 16 of their 26 goals in the second half – two of their last five
  • Have conceded 23 of their 34 in the second half including ten between minutes 46-60 – The joint most with Notts County

Club Captain Nicky Hunt echoed the thoughts of his manager post match to leytonorient.com there are no excuses for today we were miles off it, the second half performance was not acceptable from any of us and it won’t happen again”. Despite the result, Hunt quickly looked ahead to the next game “we have eradicate it from our memory, this hurts but the more we think about it the more it will effect us. Clear it out of our heads and go all out for Barnet” .

  • Record scoring first – W6  D2  L1      home W3
  • Have won last eight home games
  • Only lost one of last 18 home games – W14  D3  L1   – Exeter 3-1, 16/01/16
  • Only lost one of their last 19 games – W16  D2  L1   Doncaster 26/11/16
  • Record Conceding first – W1  D1  L12       home D1  L9
  • Draw in last game vs Cambridge was Orient’s first point in 15 games – D1  L14
  • One win in last 25 games – W1  D3  L21   Hartlepool , 22/10/16
  • Only won one of last 22 home games – W1  D4  L17     Portsmouth, 26/12/15

Edwards is taking on Barnet for the second time as Orient manager tomorrow after taking charge of the first meeting between the sides in October and is expecting another tough test. “They are a good side, we drew 0-0 earlier in the season and it was a tough game. They have pushed on even further and have made a couple of signings. They have a strong squad, you just need to look at their bench with the strength in depth they have, it will be a real tough test”

  • After the sides met in early October both sat on 12 points, since then their points return:
  • Barnet taken 24 points from 14 games
  • Orient taken 13 points from 13 games

Barnet head to Orient tomorrow following a 1-0 home win Plymouth on Monday thanks to a first half goal from Mauro Vilhete. The Bees have won five of their last seven games seeing them move to ninth position on 36 points, just two points outside of the play off places. The Bees have been steadily climbing the table despite the departure of Martin Allen in early December.

Rossi Eames and Henry Newman took over on an interim basis but three wins from five has seen the pair continue the work that Allen left behind. Eames and Newman have worked for several years at Barnet in Academy manager and youth development roles. The pair have managed together before with U18’s which saw them win Football League Youth Alliance two years ago.

  • Have kept eight clean sheets in 24 league matches
  • Kept their first clean sheet vs Plymouth in four league games
  • Kept four clean sheets in their last eight games – two away from home
  • Kept four in their 12 away league matches this season

Eames was delighted with the performance of his side against Plymouth, speaking post match to barnetfc.comOver the moon are the words, it was absolute fantastic performance in and out of possession, the amount of chances we created was excellent”. Eames was quick to acknowledge the performance of the whole team including new signings Simeon Akinola and Ricardo Santos.

  • Only Carlisle and Doncaster have failed to score in less games in League 2
  • Are one of two sides (Fleetwood) in football league to have score in every away league match this season
  • Have scored in their last seven league games and 13 of their last 14 league games
  • Barnet last failed to score 19/11/16 – 0-0 draw with Crewe

Newman echoed Eames thoughts on the performance, describing it as one of the best performances I have seen”. Speaking to barnetfc.com “some of the work we did in possession of the football was a delight to watch and how the boys have taken on so much information in a short space of time is great”.

  • Barnet have scored in their last 21 away league matches
  • Last failed to score in an away league match 23/01/16 – 0-0 at Stevenage

  • Only Carlisle, Exeter and Hartlepool (7) have more
  • Both team have scored in 15/24 games (four of last six) and eight of their 12 away games

With Newman and Eames background with the academy and youth teams, they utilised some of their younger players on Monday, something which Newman doesn’t see any problem with. “We don’t even think about age, if you are good enough, you are old enough. We have a big training group to pick from I don’t care if you are 18 or 36, if you are good enough to start you will, we have seen both ends of the spectrum”.

  • Have scored 21 of their 33 goals in the second half of games
  • Have netted 15 goals in the last 30 minutes of matches
  • However six of their last 11 goals score have been in the first half

  • No team in league two has concede more in that period
  • 11 of their 18 away goals have been conceded in that period and five of their last six

Barnet have already added four players to their squad this January with Simeon Akinola (Braintree), Ricardo Santos (Peterborough), David Tutonda (Cardiff) and Dan Sweeney (Maidstone). The addition to the squad have added quality to the squad and added competition to Newman. Speaking ahead of the trip to Orient to barnetfc.com “we have seen a lot of the players in the team wanting to keep their spot and others wanting to get back into the team. We want to make sure we are raising the calibre of the squad as a whole. Each player we bring in we are challenging the player in that position therefore raising the performance of everyone at the club”.

  • Have opened the scoring in 11 games this season
  • In six of these games the goal has been in the first 15 minutes – including two o their last three goals
  • Only Carlilse (7) and Colchester (8) have done it more
  • Have conceded the first goal in 11 games – 10 times in the first half

Both Eames and Newman are aware that Orient will want to rectify the wrongs of Monday but we are a good positive mind after the performance over Plymouth and we are looking to build on that straight away” They added “the challenge to us is being really focused on how we are playing our game, that’s what we did on Monday and why the performance was so good. If we do that against Orient we have a good chance”.

  • Barnet have only lost one of their 12 games against bottom half sides – W6  D5  L1
  • Defeat came vs Stevenage, 2-1
  • All three away defeats have come against teams in the top six

The pair describe Orient as “having an experience side with some players who have had good careers behind them with some younger players coming through aswell. They usually play a semi-traditional 4-4-2. They had two good results over the Christmas period at home against Crawley and a draw against Cambridge. I am sure they are looking to bounce back this weekend”.
