Paul and Jay give Hendon Perfect Home Start

Leyton Orient boss Ian Hendon hailed “a team performance” from his side as his league reign started with a win at home to Barnet yesterday. 2 goals in a minute from Jay Simpson and summer signing Paul McCallum helped Orient on their way to victory. It was not all plain sailing for the O’s who were under pressure for spells in the first half but a change of system at half time helped Hendon’s side to the win.

Hendon signed as manager in the summer after a dismal season for the club last season, looking to bring some much need stability to the football club. It was a perfect game to start the season having played for both clubs during his footballing career.

The former West Ham coach continued as much of pre-season with a 4-4-2 diamond, offering starts to 5 summer signings. Sean Clohessy and Fraser Shaw started at full back with Connor Essam partnering new captain Mathieu Baudry at center half. Sammy Moore started alongside Bradley Pritchard as the “2″ in the diamond while Paul McCallum started in attack.

Bees manager Martin Allen named only 2 debutantes in his opening day side with Gavin Hoyte slotting in at right back and Bira Dembele starting at center half.  Prolific scorers at non-league level in Michael Gash and John Akinde started in attack for the visitors.

After all of the attention on Hendon pre-match, it was the away side who looked right up for the occasion. The O’s  struggled at home last season were finding it hard to play the open football the fans had seen in pre-season. Barnet were looking to find Akinde and Gash in the channels with both having a physical presence. Winger Andy Yiadom was nearly allowed an unchallenged run into the penalty area but a fine tackle from Lloyd James stopped him in his tracks.

It was then the former Southampton trainee who set up the first real chance of the game. His through ball found Paul McCallum who had beaten the Barnet offside trap but his curling shot went wide of the mark. A guilt edge chance with the former Hammer brimming with confidence after goals in pre-season.

The home side were finding it difficult to play especially trying to handle John Akinde who was providing all sorts of problem to Baudry. The striker was holding the ball up for the visitors to much effect bringing his team mates into play. It was the former Bristol City striker who created the best chance for Barnet after 15 minutes. A battling run down the left flank saw him enter the penalty area crossing to his strike partner Michael Gash. But his 8 yard side footed effort into the half empty goal was screwed wide. A major chance in terms of the game with the Bees knowing that at this level you have to score when you are on top.

With the home side utilizing the midfield diamond, at times it appeared they were left short in center areas which allowed the Bees to break. Sean Clohessy and Fraser Shaw were tasked with providing width for the O’s and it almost paid off on 21 minutes with Clohessy crossing to Simpson who curled over.

Akinde was a real menace up front for the visitors and created a chance of his own after 24 minutes. A neat run in the right channel saw his shot saved by Alex Ciask in goal, Akinde followed up crossing to Curtis Weston who headed over. Barnet were well on top with Orient at times looking adrift of ideas but credit has to go to Martin Allen who had stifled Orient going forward.

Bradley Pritchard was a bright spark for the O’s, after being shoved out to play right midfield last season, the former Charlton man was reveling in his central role. His energy and work rate nearly saw Orient take a lead into the break with a brilliant recovering slide tackle putting Clohessy away down the right. A neat passing move followed with Pritchard crossing but too close to Graham Stack in the Barnet goal.

With the midfield diamond failing to work in the first half, Hendon changed tack in the second with  what seemed a 4-3-1-2 system with Cox given a free role to roam in attack. The change appeared to have the desired effect with Simpson and McCallum going close on 50 minutes for the hosts. Orient seemed to relish the task handed to them by Hendon with the midfielders given more license to create space and change positions.

The O’s were in the ascendancy with play being switched from left to right allowing Clohessy and Shaw to advance into attacking areas. First McCallum headed down to Clohessy but the former U volleyed over and just a minute later Shaw crossed for Pritchard but his header was easily saved by Stack. With Orient on the front foot, the Bees were limited to possession and attacks on the home goal with Akinde’s involvement drifting from the game.

Clohessy again provided width on 65 but his cross evaded everyone in the box as Orient’s search for the opener continued. The O’s bench were urging their side forward nearly taking the lead with the best move of the match. Brilliant play down the right saw Cox create space, his through ball played in Simpson who held off the challenge but his shot when agonizingly past the post.

But Orient didn’t have to wait long to break the deadlock, 6 minutes later, Simpson put Orient ahead. Another move down the right saw Pritchard play in Cox who continued to grow in the game ever more. The diminutive winger crossed for Simpson who volleyed home at the near post. A fine team goal with delight clear to see on every O’s player. The O’s didn’t leave off their, doubling their lead within a minute, Clohessy beat his winger and drove towards the penalty area. His deep cross found McCallum, the ball dropped to the forward who smashed home to double the lead.

The O’s were fully in their stride now with all of the team playing their part in the victory with a man of the match display for Bradley Pricthard. I was not the biggest fan of the former Charlton man last season but he has fitted in well under Hendon. The free nature in the midfield seems to suit him and with his best game an Orient shirt, there is definitely more to come from him.

Martin Allen will be disappointed his side did not take their chances when on top, something  which will need to be worked on in the coming weeks. Akinde provided a physical presence and outlet for the Bees. But he faded towards the end along with a plan B for Barnet.

A completely different feel around Brisbane Road today, the reception for Hendon and the atmosphere inside the ground. The spirit, togetherness and unity appears to be in full shape highlighting Moore’s comments pre match that “You need to have a good team spirit on and off the pitch” LeytonOrient.com

Hendon praised his side in what would be what you call a typical League 2 match. There will be tougher games in he division but if the second half performance is anything to go by; Orient be dangerous when firing on all cylinders.

“Boys are Ready, We Can’t wait for the 8th”

Leyton Orient midfielder Sammy Moore is hoping for a big season at the O’s after a summer switch from AFC Wimbledon. Speaking to Leytonorient.com after his side 1-0 win over Southend last weekend “It was a really promising performance, the perfect match to go into next weekend at home to Barnet”.

Moore is playing in what seems a favoured diamond formation stated that “everyone is fighting for their shirts from 1-11, it is up to us to put a shift in and keep our place”. The O’s have seen major change over the summer with Ian Hendon replacing Fabio Liverani as manager with Moore happy to link up with a former manager “I knew Hendon and Hess before so it was all good”.

Hendon’s appointment has hopefully seen some stability created at the East London club after a wayward season saw them relegated to the fourth tier for the first time in 10 years. Moore spoke highly of the “togetherness and unity” the squad had created in pre season, “there is a real good buzz around the place, good team spirit on and off the pitch which is needed for a promotion push. We need to make sure we hit the ground running and come off the field with 3 points”.

Hendon added Andy Hessenhaler as his assistant and it appears he has been integral to the summer recruitment for the O’s which has seen younger, hungrier players enter the building whilst some senior pro’s have been released.

  1. Outs – Scott Cuthbert (Luton), Romain Vincelot (Coventry), Nathan Clarke (Bradford), David Mooney (Southend), Andrea Dossena and Giavito Plasmati (Released), Kevin Lisbie and Shaun Batt (Barnet), Gary Sawyer (Plymouth), Elliot Omosuzi (Cambridge), Adam Legizins (Birmingham), Chris Dagnall (India), Josh Wright (Gillingham), Marvin Bartley (Hibs) and Darius Henderson (Scunthorpe)
  2. Ins – Blair Turgott (Coventry), Frazer Shaw (Dulwich Hamlet), Connor Essam (Dover), Ollie Palmer (Mansfield), Sammy Moore (Wimbledon), Sean Clohessy (Colchester), Alex Ciask (Burnley), Paul McCallum (West Ham), Alan Dunne (Millwall).

Paul McCallum has been in terrific form in pre season for the O’s and is happy to make East London a permanent home. Speaking to BBC 94.9 the striker stated “It’s what was important for me, I wanted to settle down”. McCallum is one of many signings who has worked under Ian Hendon at West Ham and the striker is happy to link up with his former manager.

The O’s are tipped by some for an immediate return to League 1 with many bookmakers putting them as fourth favorites for the title. Promotion has been spoken about in E10 with Hendon and McCallum stating that “promotion is the aim for us” but it will be tough especially as they face conference champions Barnet at home on Saturday in their opening fixture.

Tomorrow’s clash with the Bees is Orient’s first home game since their relegation and Hendon’s first as manager of the O’s. Speaking to the Waltham Forest Guardin he stated that “I’m really looking forward to it I hope a lot of fans turn up  We’re playing at home and we want to try to make it a bit of a fortress. I think every manager says the same thing about the home games and I’m no different”.

  • One of the major reasons Orient lost their League 1 status was their home record which was the joint worse in League 1 last year.
  • Played 23 – Won 5, Drew 6, Lost 12, Scored 24, Conceded 33, Points 21
  • Orient did not win a home match until November

Hendon’s side in pre-season has been seen as a high tempo, good passing side with O’s fans hoping for more of the same tomorrow. The former West Ham coach continued with the Waltham Forest Guardian I want teams to come to Orient and not enjoy their football. I want us to enjoy playing at home and winning matches”.

The clash with Barnet has added significance with Hendon playing for the Bees between 2003 and 2009. Kevin Lisbie and Shaun Batt will be returned with Barnet after signing in the summer from the O’s and will looking to start the season with a win.

Barnet manager Martin Allen spoke to Bees Player today “We’re looking forward to tomorrow; we’ve had 5 weeks preparation and training. I think like all football lovers, players, supporters, managers and coaches, everyone looks forward to this day. He added ” Being a local London derby after winning a championship, there’s no doubt that it’s all very exciting”.

Barnet won the Conference last year after 2 seasons back in the conference, with a move to their new stadium, The Hive, Barnet are hoping for a prolonged stay in the fourth tier. Along with Batt and Lisbie; Allen has added Bira Dembele (Stevenage), Gavin Hoyte (Gillingham), Jamie Stephens (Newport).

  • Top scorers away from home last season – 40 in 23 games
  • Only failed to score in 2 league matches last season – away
  • Only defeats in their last 11 games

Despite having a winning mentality Allen is weary of the O’s threat, “There is no doubt in my mind Orient will be in the top part of this league”. But Allen is keeping everything low key ahead of tomorrow with the game set to attract a big crowd, with the game being the first meeting between the sides in the League since 2006.

Got What We Deserved

The table never lies, a cliche always used in football but after 46 games Leyton Orient got what they deserved… relegation. Going into yesterday’s match at Swindon, the O’s knew that only a win and three results going in their favour would preserve their league 1 status. However, just like the previous 45, the East London faithful were given a glimmer of hope before the inevitable happened… relegation to the fourth tier after 9 years away.

In a season of turmoil, 4 managers in the first 5 months of the season says it all but off field problems continued on the pitch. After expectation for the first time in many years, what unfolded in the 46 games of the season was a surprise. The inability to beat 10 men was once again the case yesterday with Tyron Belford sent off after 20 minutes for bringing down Lloyd James. James missed the resulting penalty but Swindon who made 9 changes looked far from the side that dominated Orient in E10 earlier in the season.

That faint glimmer of hope was given with Dean Cox giving Orient the lead 5 minutes before the break with at that point Orient safe. But it was never going to be that easy despite Chris Dagnall putting Orient 2-0 up  minutes after the restart. Another collapse followed. With results going against Orient, Anton Rogers clever free kick halved the deficit before Andy Williams levelled from the spot to condemn the O’s to life in League 2.

Swindon, who had the play offs at the fore front of their minds made 9 changes whilst Orient made 2: Josh Wright replaced Shaun Batt while Luke O’Neil came in for Scott Cuthbert. A 4-3-3 system or was it a 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1 formation I don’t think many people knew but Orient started brightly looking for a goal from the off.

The O’s knew that they had to their job to get the win and see what happens elsewhere. Jay Simpson shot straight at Belford when played in before Lloyd James drilled wide for the away side. The Robins known for their free flowing passing were far from that highlighting the 9 changes made, Orient continued to press with opportunities beginning presenting but Josh Wright’s break forward saw his effort scuff wide.

Swindon first chance came when on loan Chelsea midfielder John Swift broke down the left to the byline and cross to Andy Williams but Alex Ciask saved well down to his right. The visitors were handed a lifeline after just 20 minutes, poor passing in central midfield saw Wright play in James, the former Southampton midfielder nicked the ball around Belford with the keeper bringing him down. No option for the referee and Belford was given his marching orders.

James saw his penalty saved as Orient season unfolded in their 46th game of the campaign. With the home side down to 10 and Orient lacking confidence, the O’s struggled to go forward with the large away following getting frustrated. Results were going their way at this stage but Liverani’s men were struggling to create chances. Jay Simpson looked lively on the right while Dean Cox and Marvin Bartley appeared up for the fight.

Chris Dagnall continued as always working hard in attack but saw his swiveled effort fly over the bar as Orient searched for the opener. But 5 minutes before half time, pressure from Orient saw another mistake with Cox nipping in and slotting home giving Orient the lead. Swindon only forced Ciask into one more save with Swift’s shot saved down to his right.

That glimmer of hope talked about pre match was there but all Orient fans knew that it would not end this way. Dagnall did put Orient 2-0 ahead after Simpson broke through the center, his shot fell to Dagnall who curled home for his first goal in 11 matches. However, news filtered through of Crawley’s opener and Notts County’s goal but the away side had to finish the job.

Dean Cox clipped the bar after being put through by Chris Dagnall in what could be his last game in a Orient shirt. With the numerical disadvantage Swindon appeared to grow in the game but Orient should have finished them off after Josh Wright clipped the post.

One of the major problems for the O’s this season has been the ability to defend free kicks, after Mathieu Baudry gave a silly foul away. A clever free kick routine saw Anton Rogers flick up the ball and volley beyond Ciask to halve the deficit. With Orient seemingly throwing away another game against 10 men, Swindon pushed for the equalizer. The travelling away contingent searched for good news in the other matches but news wasn’t going their way.

The Robins continued on the front foot with Andy Williams dazzling Matheiu Baudry down the left but his cross shot creeped just wide of the far post. Orient’s fight appeared to have diminished but Will Randell drilled wide after Andy Williams set up the 18 year old. Then somehow Orient escaped as Jack Bartham broke down the right, his whipped cross fell to John Swift 6 yards out and only the Chelsea youngster knows how he blazed over.

As Colchester took the lead against Preston, Orient crumbled for the upteenth time this season. Sam Ricketts broke into the penalty area on the left side, Luke O’Neil caught the on loan Wolves man, with the referee having no option but to point to the spot. Andy Williams stepped up and slotted home condemning Orient to relegation. Nathan Clarke went close in the final stages but as the Orient fans chanting “Orient till I Die”, it appeared that they were the only ones up for the fight for the season.

Orient relegated to the fourth tier after a 9 year stint away following promotion in 2006. But relegation was self inflicted throughout the club, the chairman’s inability to appoint a manager with any English league experience, too many backroom changes and poor summer signings costing the O’s. Yes the turmoil has not helped the players but just think of how many players have under performed… There are not many who haven’t, it says it all really that on loan Alex Ciask won the performance award for the season having only joined in February.

“The president should be the most disappointed man at the club” were words uttered by Liverani (via the translator) Well four words that spring to mind What about the Fans? Supporting through thick and thin, Orient is in the blood, engrained on the brain and will remain in my life forever but sometime you do think about why? Well @les_bristow is to blame, well one of the best decisions he made in life. You take the ups with the downs but it is amazing how much a club’s togetherness has changed in 12 months. I don’t know where to start but Orient needs freshening up on the pitch but 4 points from the last 21 available says it all for a team that never believed they could be relegated until the whistle blew yesterday afternoon.

Former O’s skipper John Mackie and chief executive Matt Porter were in the away end yesterday and summed up Orient on twitter:

Mackie: Well that’s how u fuck up a football club in 1 year  and Feel truly gutted for all the O’s fans!

Porter: Dear oh dear. No words to describe what a waste of a perfectly good football club and a completely avoidable situation this is. Devastated.

Despite the disappointment of this season, all Orient fans know that they will be there in pre-season and at the start of the season for the opening game, I mean who wouldn’t want an away trip to Newport on a Tuesday night. Orient is a way of life for some fans but what would you do without Orient? The summer will be a long one but come August we will all be there.

“Make or Break, This is It”

Leyton Orient midfielder Josh Wright insists his side will do everything in their power to get the three points at Swindon tomorrow. The O’s who fell to 23rd position, 2 points from safety after Colchester’s draw with Swindon on Tuesday night, need to win and hope Notts County, Crawley and Colchester fail to win to keep their league 1 status. Orient were going down during their game against Sheffield United last weekend but Crawley’s collapse at Peterborough handed the O’s a lifeline.

Wright stated that “we will do everything possible to get the 3 points” but he suggests that the pressure could be off of the East London side as they know exactly what they have to do. “We have to focus on ourselves, we know our jobs. We have to do it on Sunday and roll our sleeves up”. Both Wright and Fabio Liverani hinted at a sign of complacency since their victory at Coventry in April “We thought it was done, maybe we lost our guard and the last few games hasn’t adjusting our position. Maybe subconsciously we thought we have achieved the final result; goods have to be achieved before celebrated”.

  • Orient have worse record in the six games since 1-0 win at Coventry
  • 3 points from last 18 available – Drew 3, Lost 3

Liverani believes also that a “miracle” can be achieved tomorrow with Orient’s 9 year stint in League 1 continuing “I still believe, firstly in my players and the results that can happen in the league”. Liverani maintained that their fate was in their own hands but after defeat against Rochdale, that hope was diminished “it isn’t going to be easy, no longer in our hands but we need to beat Swindon and then look elsewhere”.

  • Swindon’s record against bottom 4- Won 1 of 7 games (2-1 at Orient) and lost to Crawley (2-1) and Yeovil (1-0) at home since Christmas

Swindon go into tomorrow’s clash with more than one eye on the play offs which start next Thursday. The Robins have had their play-off spot confirmed for the past few weeks with Mark Cooper “glad of when the regular season is done”. Swindon poor form since Christmas saw their automatic promotion chances reduce with their aim refocusing to the play offs. Cooper stated “we try and do everything for the best of the football club, club’s interests and future of the club”.

  • Swindon were joint top at turn of the year on 48 points after 23 games
  • But have only won 9of 21 games since picking up just 31 points out of possible 63
  • Bristol City picked up 17 more points in same period

Cooper has been preparing his side in training for the playoffs which start on Thursday and the Robins manager hinted at that “we try and do what is best for us, the players having opportunity to be ready tactically and physically for 7th May”. In recent weeks, Cooper has shuffled his pack with criticism from MK Dons firmly being heard but Cooper insists that chances have been given to all his players before the play offs.

  • Swindon home record – W12, D4, L6 only won 1 of last 4at County Ground
  • Without a win in last 4 – form in last 6 – W2, D2, L2
  • Only won 2 of last 8 games
  • Record when scored 1st (home record in brackets) –W21, D1, L3 (W12, D1, L1) 1 loss in last 16 when scored first
  • Record when conceded 1st (home record in brackets) – W2, D7, L10) (W0, D3, L5) only picked up 3points out of possible 24
  • Andy Williams top scorer with 20goals but he has no goal in last 10 and only in last 14 appearances

Cooper said his side are looking forward to tomorrow’s game “there is something on the game, it gives us an opportunity to sample a good atmosphere, players are ready for that” Swindon will play the away leg first in the play offs but will know tomorrow whether they will face Sheffield United or Chesterfield.

  • Swindon have kept14 clean sheets, at home but have only 1 in their last 9
  • Failed to score in 9 gamesat home, failed to score in of their last 8
  • 11of their 23 wins have been by 1 goal – 6 of 12 at home
  • 7of their 13 defeats been by goal – of at home
  • Scored 51%of their goals in the second half with 20% in final 15 minutes – gained 9 points in that period

Like most managers, Cooper hinted at the instability at Orient this year and credited former manager Russell Slade. “It shows just what a brilliant job Slade did when he was left alone to do his job. The group were not the most talented but showed great togetherness, work ethic and spirit which got them so close but something has changed” Despite the changes this season it appears that Liverani is here to stay with the Italian stating that “I have 2 years left on my contract and have no problem in staying in charge”

  • Orient’s away form – W7, D6, L9 – 27/48 points away from home
  • No win in last 6 games– only picked up 10 points from last 30 available
  • No win in last 3away games, only 1 win in last 6 on the road, picking up just 4 points from last 18 available
  • Record scored 1st (Away Record in brackets) – W9, D5, L2 (W5, D3, L1) unbeaten in last 8 away games scoring first
  • Record conceding 1st (Away record in brackets) – W3, D3, L19 (W2, D2, L8) no win in last 5 away, losing 4 of them
  • of 12 wins been by 1 goalmargin (3 by 1 and by 2) –  of 7 away wins by 1 goal
  • 11of 21 defeats been by 1 goal – 4 of away
  • Failed to score in 37%of games – 16 out of 43 including of last 10
  • Kept 10 clean sheets but not kept one in last 10

Orient appear to have no new injury worries ahead of the game tomorrow while Mark Cooper is not risking any player who has a slight knock. Harry Toffolo (dead leg), Massimo Luongo (twisted ankle), Nathan Thompson, Wes Fotherington and Jonathon Obika are all set miss out with problems but all should be back for the play offs.

Wright hit the nail on the head in his pre match interview “Many believe we shouldn’t be in this position but we are in it and have to fight for our lives. We can’t look or change what has happened, the points are on the table and we are where we are”. Orient have offered free coaches for travelling supporters with Wright praising the support from fans “It is not easy, it has been a long tough season, demoralizing at times. The support can lift us and hopefully can play their part”

  • Orient conceded 11 goals in the away matches against top 3
  • Picked up only 3 points from 21 against top 4
  • Swindon won earlier meeting in season 2-1 at Brisbane Road, their first win in 9 games against Orient
  • Swindon have only won 1of last 5 meetings between sides at County Ground – Orient won 3

Prediction – Swindon 1-1 Leyton Orient

Hanging by a Thread…

Win and Just Hope were the words uttered by O’s fans as they left Brisbane Road yesterday afternoon. After a 1-1 draw against Sheffield United, the Orient faithful know that fate is out of their hands and the inaugural words of “We need a miracle”. With Orient seemingly hanging on to their League 1 safety for the majority of the afternoon and were saying goodbye to their 9 year stay until Mathieu Baudry popped up to head home with just 20 minutes left.

A lifeline had be thrown to Fabio Liverani’s men who at this stage needed to win with Crewe winning at Coventry and Crawley winning at Peterborough. But the Blades went straight on the attack for the equalizer and achieved it just 6 minutes later. Bob Harrisfiring home with no end of deflections sending it beyond Alex Ciask.

The trapdoor had opened with Orient free falling back to League 2 up until the 87 minute. News had filtered through to the fans of Crawley’s capitalization at Peterborough and were losing 4-3. Liverani urged his men forward for the winner but as soon as the news reached they were pushed back. The final whistle went with everyone around the ground checking results and whether Orient still had a chance of survival. Only a win is needed next weekend with 4 results needing to go in Orient’s favour despite this we all know that we will be at the County Ground a week today, wondering what outcome will be achieved.

Liverani made 4 changes from his sides 1-0 defeat at Rochdale in midweek with Shaun Batt, Lloyd James, Jay Simpson and Scott Cuthbert welcomed back whilst Shane Lowry, Josh Wright, David  Mooney and Ryan Hedges dropping out. Nigel Clough made 2 changes with his side still needing a result to ensure of a play off place: Bob Harris and Che Adams returned whilst Terry Kennedy and Michael Doyle dropped out.

Both teams started brightly knowing that a result was key but for different reasons. The home side had early possession but were unable to create any opportunities with United looking relatively comfortable. United were playing a 4-1-4-1 formation with Jason Holt allowed freedom to drift between midfield and attack.

The Blades should have taken the lead after just 8 minutes, Holt playing in the hole, completed a 1-2 with Steven Davis. The return found Holt unmarked in the penalty area but he shot straight at keeper Alex Ciask. United continued pushing forward with Davies volleying over at the back post before Jamie Murphy low drive was pushed around the post.

Orient were well on the back foot with United passing the ball around nicely looking to create chances. The O’s were leaving the away side to break into with some appearing to be frightened to make a challenge. Just like the start of the season, Orient looked vulnerable from corners with United’s pace dangerous on the attack. Che Adams went close for the visitors but his goal bound shot was deflected wide.

Orient began to grow into the game more with increased possession, Dagnall shot straight at Howard after being played in down the left channel. The home side were slowly breaking through United’s defense, Batt, Simpson, Dagnall and Cox were beginning to link together with a few last ditch challenges.

Howard had to tip over a Shaun Batt effort 5 minutes before the break, Cox took the ball across the edge of the box finding Batt who’s rising effort was tipped over from a corner. Marvin Bartley headed over the resulting corner. Despite Orient’s ascendancy their vulnerability for a counter attack was clear to see. It was here where more composure from United would have seen the opener. Jamie Murphy broke down the right, finding Adams his shot was blocked by Ciask before Murphy had a shot also saved. Coutts fired over the loose ball as the danger decreased.

The second half started with a higher tempo with the fans knowing at this stage only a win was enough. Shaun Batt was replaced by McAnuff after 5 minutes of the second half but United were on top. Adams had a shot blocked after Orient failed to clear the ball under pressure from the away side. Dean Cox shot straight at Howard after linking up with Simpson down the left but the game had opened up with space appearing all over the pitch.

Josh Wright replaced Lloyd James for the home side whilst Stephen Scougall and Dominic Calvert-Lewin replaced Che Adams and Steve Davies for United. Both sides had settled down somewhat with chances few and far between but Cox had a header flicked around the post for a corner. Baudry headed home Cox’s corner to put the O’s in front handing them a lifeline to survival. Their first goal from a corner since Coventry at home in November.

But all home fans knew that there was a long way to go. Immediately after the goal, United were straight on the front foot with Scougall having a shot brilliantly blocked by Clarke after he looked set to draw United level. Wave after wave of pressure flooded towards the home goal with John Brayford having a shot deflected wide with Orient allowing the center half to carry the ball. His center half partner, Chris Basham fired over from the resulting corner.

The warning signs were there for the O’s and just 7 minutes after the opener, the Blades drew level. Murphy worked the ball from the right to Bob Harris who had space on the edge of the area, his shot deflected beyond Ciask  to make the level the scores. Orient knew they needed a win with a draw not enough to keep their survival hopes going but it was Jose Baxter who went inches away from a second with his free kick striking the post with Ciask beaten.

Liverani threw on David Mooney for Marvin Bartley as the home side pushed for a second, Jay Simpson had a free kick tipped over as Orient’s league 1 position was rapidly vanishing. That was, until news filtered through of Crawley who had led twice at Peterborough conceding two goals in three minutes to lose. The message was given to the bench with both Liverani and Nugent telling the players to drop back and keep the point.

The final whistle blew with everyone knowing only a win and a mountain of luck will see the O’s play in League 1 next season. The O’s need to win and hope Notts C, Crawley and Colchester all fail to win. A tall ask but it is football and anything can happen. But I think it is safe to say that we all go to Swindon knowing that relegation is calling with Southend appearing to swap positions, can’t think of anything much worse.

But only Orient have themselves to blame for the position they are in, the draw at Crewe appears to every fan who went, the game where relegation was achieved. Dominating the second half but the inability to grab the winner, a problem in a host of games this year of grabbing a goal. We travel to Swindon in hope of a miracle but even the most optimistic fan must see what has been coming for the majority of the season, Relegation.

“No Matter How, Got to Get 3 Points”

Leyton Orient keeper Alex Ciask said there can be no more excuses as his side go into tomorrow’s clash with Sheffield United knowing that no less than a win is needed. After a 1-0 defeat in midweek to Rochdale, fate was taken out of their hands as they sit 2 points from safety with only 2 games to play.

The on loan Burnley stopper stated that despite the position they are in we “always have to believe, we can’t give up. It isn’t in our hands any more so tomorrow we have to pick up 3 points, it is all you can do”. Orient fell to their third straight defeat after Ian Henderson’s strike at Spotland, with their form far from what is needed to survive relegation. Ciask stated many times that his sides “failed to create enough chances to challenge their keeper, Saturday is must win, we can’t have any more excuses”

  • O’s picked up5 points from last 18 available – LLLDDW
  • 1win in last 6 – 1-0 away victory at Coventry
  • 8points from last 18 available at home – LDWDWL (Wins 3-1 Port Vale, 3-0 Yeovil)
  • Home Form –W5, D5, L12 – 20/47 points
  • Lost 21 games this season –11 by a 1 goal margin and 7 by a 2 goal margin
  • Failed to score in 9 of 21 home matches, only keeping 5 clean sheets
  • Conceded 1st in last 4 matches
  • Only picked up 12 points from 75 when conceding first – W3, D3, L19 (Home – W1, D1, L11)

Sheffield United arrive in Leyton, still not confirming their play off spot after a 1-1 draw at home to Bradford last weekend. Blades keeper Mark Howard’s main focus is on ensuring they take part beyond the 3rd of May, “we need to win to guarantee place, that’s all we are looking to do, it is in our own hands”. United conceded a late equalizer against Bradford along with Rochdale’s win in midweek, United still could miss out on a play off spot.

  • Picked up points from last 18 available – DLDWWL
  • Last 5 away games- LDWDD – Last win at Barnsley (2-0), defeat at Yeovil (1-0)
  • Away form – W9, D6, L7 – 33 points – 5th best away record in League

Nigel Clough rued his sides inability to keep a clean sheet against their Yorkshire rivals “it is a frustrating one, being 1-0 up with 5 minutes to go, we played well enough to win the game today”. With no win in their last three games, Clough knows that the difference between 5th and 6th in the playoffs could be key, “we can’t be complacent, we have to get a point on Saturday”.

United play 6th placed Chesterfield on the last day of the season which could be a crunch match to who finishes in the higher position. Clough stated in his pre match interview that “we don’t want to leave anything to chance. We need a clean sheet in one of our two games”.

  • 10 clean sheets this season – in last 4, in their last and only  in their last 20 games
  • Only failed to score in matches this season – scored in 17 out of their last 18 matches
  • 12 out of their 19 wins by 1 goal (out of 9 away)
  • 11 out of 13 defeats by 1 goal (out of 7 away)
  • Record when scoring first – W15, D4, L1 (Away – W7, D2, L0) 49/69 points
  • Record when conceding first – W4, D8, L12 (Away – W2, D4, L7)
  • United not won last away games when conceded first

The O’s will need to be weary of the threat that United possess in the second half of matches this term. Orient were nearly caught out earlier in the season when 2 goals in last 5 minutes saw United come back to lead 2-1 before Romain Vincelot headed home in injury time.

  • 19th on 1st half form – 3rd on 2nd half form
  • 1st half– F17, A21   2nd half – F47 A30
  • Scored 22 in last 15 minutes – would sit 8th if games ended after 75 minutes (gained 5 points)
  • Scored 37 in last 30 minutes – would sit 13th if games ended after 60 minutes (gained 13 points)
  • Only Bristol City have scored more goals in second half (50) but no team netted more in last 15 than the Blades

Both managers are aware of the threat that their opponents possess – Liverani “Sheffield United are one of the best sides in the league, they are solid at the back and very creative up front through Murphy and Done”.

Clough on Orient “When you look at their squad on paper it is as good as anything in this league and if anything stronger that the one that too them to play off finals last season”.

Fabio Liverani remains confident that his side can beat the drop “We still believe that 6 points can avoid relegation considering that together with Port Vale we have the best goal difference”. However the Italian did admit to the media that “the confidence went down after their goal and we lost”. After a demoralizing 6-1 defeat last weekend at MK Dons, Liverani made 5 changes but the end outcome was the same.

  • In of the last six seasons the team in 21st position with 2 games left has escaped relegation: (09/10 Tranmere, 08/09 Carlisle and last season Notts County)
  • In the other seasons the bottom 4 has remained the same from last 2 games till the end
  • 2 wins may not even be enough to avoid relegation –in 2012/2013 Scunthorpe were 21st with 2 games left, won both but were still relegated

Changes could be made with Scott Cuthbert back in the squad after his wife recently gave birth but Darius Henderson looks set to miss the end of the season. Chris Dagnall will continue to lead the attack with the choice of Jay Simpson or David Mooney to partner him.

  • Dagnall has played in the last 23 matches since returning from ban picked up at Bradford.
  • In fact Dagnall has played in the last 28 matches he has been available from in all competitions

Sheffield United look set to be without Matty Done and Ryan Flynn who remain doubtful with ongoing injury problems. Jay McEveley could also miss out while Terry Kennedy also looks set to miss out. Clough commented on how it can be a balancing act as this stage of the season “hoping for them to be back for play offs but it is a balancing act, got to have 1/2 an eye on if you do get in, no point in not being available for big games”.

  • Orient failed to beat a side above 13th at home this season
  • Lost of the games played at home against top 6 – only point came in 0-0 draw with MK Dons
  • Sheffield United record against bottom 6 – P11, W6, D3, L2 (Away – W3, D1, L1)
  • However the Blades haven’t won the last games they have played against bottom 6     (1-0 at Yeovil, 1-2 home to Crewe and 1-1 at Crawley)

A big crowd is expected with Sheffield United selling their full allocation while Orient have halved ticket prices for a massive game in their season. Liverani has urged fans to support the team “I can only ask for them to support us from the warm ups to the final whistle and in return I can assure that the players will give everything”.

  • Orient haven’t won in the last 10 meetings between sides – draws and defeats
  • Orient’s last win at home against Sheffield United was in 1983
  • Last 4 leagues meetings have been draws

Prediction – Leyton Orient 2-2 Sheffield United

“We Can’t Wait to Put Things Right”

Leyton Orient captain Nathan Clarke can’t wait to put things right tomorrow night at Rochdale. The O’s travel to Spotland for their rearranged game as they sit 2 points from safety at the bottom of League 1. Orient were thumped 6-1 at Stadium MK on Saturday in their heaviest defeat since 2002 but Clarke stated “we need to put this one to one side, with only 3 games left we can’t dwell on it and go in to Tuesday upbeat and positive”.

Orient conceded 3 goals in 7 first half minutes to put the game out of sight with both Fabio Liverani and Clarke apologizing to the travelling support “we as players have let down a good number of travelling fans down, we have let them down massively but everyone needs to stick together”. Many of the away fans left before the final whistle on Saturday and Liverani stated that “I would have done the same had I been a supporter”.

Orient still have their fate in their own hands but a result at Spotland is imperative with only 3 games remaining of the season. Chris Dagnall returns to one of his former clubs tomorrow night and is keen for the O’s “put it right, Saturday’s game is gone, we need to put all of our attention and thought for tomorrow”. It may be easier said than done but Clarke’s honesty after the MK Dons result was worrying “so many of us weren’t at the races, they outplayed us, really disappointed, outworked us and sharper than us and as professionals it shouldn’t happen”

  • Orient without in a win in 4, picking up just 2 point from last 12 available
  • Away Record – W7, D6, L8 – last 4 away W1, D1, L2

Despite Orient needing the results for their survival hopes Rochdale still have a slim chance of a play off places but they suffered a major set back as they were beaten 1-0 at Gillingham on Saturday. Manager Keith Hill slammed referee Andy D’Urso “we are not happy with the standard of refereeing, really disappointed from the team of officials it was a poor performance” Dale lost Matthew Lund and Jamie Jones to red cards with Hill ruing the officials for potential of a result at Priestfield “If we had a full contingent of players, we would have got something from the game, in my opinion 3 points”.

  • Dale have 1 win in last 5 games – 1-0 vs Port Vale at home
  • Only taken 1 point from last 3 games – D1, L2 including a 4-2 home defeat by Swindon last time at Spotland

Although Rochdale sit 8 points behind 6th placed Chesterfield, Hill still wants his side to do “justice to the league” as there are a lot of things to play for. With this season being Dale’s first season in League 1, Hill spoke about how he is already building for next season with decision on many players already being made. “We need to keep the wheel turning and happy with the progress made”.

Refereeing decisions throughout the season have proved costly according to Hill with the Rochdale manager giving tomorrow’s official food for thought “I would like to be represented by a team of officials who look after my players”. Dale sit 7th on 60 points but know that a strong end of the season is needed with just 2 points seperating them in 7th and Doncaster in 13th.

  • Home form – W10, D3, L8, F33, A26 – 33 of their 60 points
  • Last 6 at home – W5, L1
  • Prior to the Swindon defeat won their last 5 at home but conceded 4 times in first half against the Robins
  • Collected 7 points from last 18 available – W2, D1, L3
  • 13 points from last 30 available – W4, D1, L5

Hill is very surprised the position that Orient find themselves in, “it is a big game for us and big game for Orient, I never envisaged Orient in this position: the players they recruited and the magnificent exploits from last season”. But the Dale manager stated that “but that is football, you have to make the most of the opportunities you are given, we are fully focused on tomorrow”.

  • Dale’s record against bottom 7: P13 – W11, D1, L1 only defeat came in a 1-0 defeat away to Port Vale
  • Orient record against top 7: P11 – W1, D4, L6 only win came away in 3-2 victory at Chesterfield in February

Orient have the toughest run in of the sides at the bottom but Dagnall knows that “a win tomorrow will put us outside the relegation zone and we need to focus on that”. Orient have a home meeting with Sheffield United on Saturday before a trip to Swindon for the season finale with all Orient fans hoping that safety is assured before then. Fabio Liverani still believes in his sides ability to beat the drop and admitted on Saturday that “if I didn’t believe we could avoid relegation then I would have left, the players believe and we are optimistic”.

Key Dale statistics:

  • 45 of their 60 points (75%) picked up against bottom of the table sides
  • 14 of their 18 wins against sides 13th and below
  • 50% of their home wins won by a 1 goal margin (5/10)
  • 4 of their home wins secured by 3 or more goals
  • 13/19 league defeats by just 1 goal but only of them at home
  • Failed to score in 12 games – 5 of which at home – scored in last 11 home games in all competitions
  • 8 clean sheets – at home but no clean sheet in and only in their last 13 matches
  • Ian Henderson top scorer with 20 goals – in his last 3 –
  • Henderson been involved in 39% of Dale’s goals (27 of 69)
  • Record when scored first – W15, D1, L1 – won last when netted first and only defeat came at home in November, 3-1 to Doncaster
  • Conceded first – W3, D5, L18 – picked up only points from possible 29  at home after conceding first

Rochdale will be without suspended duo Matthew Lund and Jamie Jones after red cards on Saturday but could welcome back Ollie Lancashire and Scott Tanser. Orient could welcome back Darius Henderson and Dean Cox who sat out the defeat on Saturday.

Last Meeting – https://footballanalyst.net/2014/09/28/outdone-once-more/

Leyton Orient 2-3 Rochdale – Both sides came from behind in an entertaining game at Brisbane Road. Matt Done opened the scoring for Dale before Jobi McAnuff and Romain Vincelot put Orient ahead. But Done and Vincenti grabbed the win for Dale.

  • Orient have won of the last 6 meetings between the sides including of the last 3 at Spotland

Prediction – Rochdale 1-1 Leyton Orient

Relegation Beckons?

In what state will the Orient players be after suffering a 6-1 demolition at Stadium MK yesterday. The East London club still have their fate in their hands with a game in hand on Tuesday away at Rochdale but what condition will the players turn up in? Gutless, heartless, passionless, three words which describe the performance or what performance you may say yesterday. After Dean Bowditch put the third placed Dons ahead, Did any Orient fans think a fight back was on the cards? No sooner than the celebrations from the first, the home side were celebrating once more, the question then was how many?

Non-existent defending once more with a third goal in 7 minutes forcing some travelling fans to leave after just 30 minutes. Dons were playing like a training game with Orient just letting them play, Hall crashed in a fourth before the break with a lovely volley outside the box with more O’s fans heading for the exits.

McAnuff had a shot early in the second half but Karl Robinson’s men appeared to still be in second gear. Rob Hall completed his hat trick when in acres of space on the edge of the box before Jay Simpson gave the remaining O’s fans their only cheer of the day before Delli Alli curled in a wonderful sixth. Does Liverani scout teams? I pretty sure most Orient fans could have told him pre match: their formation, personnel, and how they will play.

My pre match thoughts “The midfield battle could be key tomorrow with the Dons enjoying the majority of possession so Liverani could play 3 in central midfield.  MK are free flowing in possession and full of goals playing predominantly a 4-2-3-1 system.  In my opinion based on the last few weeks, 3 in central midfield is a must. James, Bartley and Wright should start if Liverani sets team’s out to deal with threats, his words not mine.”  It appeared that Liverani didn’t take any notice but then is that any surprise, well not to me. The question will remain, why appoint a manager with no English League experience and managed only 7 games in his career?

As expected MK Dons lined up 4-2-3-1 making only 1 change from their 3-0 win at Fleetwood with Dean Bowditch replacing Daniel Powell who dropped to the bench. Orient lined up 4-4-2 (for some reason, only Liverani knows) making 4 changes with starts for Jay Simpson, Jake Taylor, Lloyd James and Shane Lowry while Andrea Dossena, Josh Wright, Darius Henderson and Ryan Hedges dropping out.

It would be a long afternoon for the Orient players and fans with MK Dons having a shot in the opening minute when Rob Hall shot straight at Alex Ciask. Orient’s plan was to sit back, inviting pressure and in relative good shape in the opening 15 minutes. Jay Simpson and Chris Dagnall were told to stop Darren Potter getting on the ball deep in MK Dons’s midfield. With Potter picking up possession, the center halves split and full backs went very wide opening up Orient. With Alli and Lewis Baker very comfortable in possession ahead of Potter, wave after wave of possession progressed.

The Dons have a philosophy under Karl Robinson playing youngsters and being easy on the eye creating chances. The first chance for the home side came after Will Grigg got behind Scott Cuthbert, he progressed into the box with him going down under Matheiu Baudry’s challenge. O’s fans breathed a huge sigh of relief as referee Chris Kavanagh waving away their protests. The Dons didn’t have to wait long as they took the lead after 22 minutes with Dean Bowditch tapping in at the back post. After a move broke down, Alli who was in space on the edge of the box played Grigg in behind Shane Lowry, Grigg crossed for Bowditch who tapped home.

Orient’s shape had immediately vanished, no sooner than the O’s fans had commented, Rob Hall’s cross shot from the right evaded everyone and crept in. Orient players complained about Will Grigg’s involvement as he ran across Alex Ciask but protests were waved away. The game was over, it just remained how much was our goal difference was going to take?

The Dons were unbeaten in their last 7 had confidence oozing through their side and after a short corner found Alli, he drove into the box going under the challenge of Chris Dagnall. A soft penalty decision but when your in Orient’s situation, it wouldn’t have mattered either way. Grigg stepped up, striking home from the spot for Dons third goal in seven minutes killing the game there and then.

The home side were in cruise control with Orient showing nothing in possession or out of it. It was no more than a training game for the Dons where they were playing the ball at will around Orient. Anthony Kay was allowed to pick the ball up from deep and drive towards the Orient area, no one wanted to make a challenge with Ciask saving his effort. Passionless, heartless words shouted from the away section who have put up with a lot this season with this performance finally testing their limits.

Rob Hall struck his second of the match and the Dons fourth of the first half after 37 minutes. Hall beat Shane Lowry with ease, playing a forward ball to Grigg, his poor control didn’t matter as the loose ball fell to Hall who fired home a stunning volley beyond Ciask. There were faults for every goal, Hall’s desire saw him beat Lloyd James and Marvin Bartley who just stood and watch the on loan Bolton winger fire home.

Jay Simpson had Orient’s only shot of the half but failed to trouble Dave Martin who was having easy day of the season. The half was drew to an end with Orient fans leaving in their droves, would Liverani read the riot act? Well, via the translator perhaps?

The second half actually started with Jobi McAnuff driving in from the left and forcing Martin in to a save with Shaun Batt weakly shooting at goal. Batt who had came on for Jake Taylor at half time was making his first appearance since the 14th February. Jay Simpson had dropped deeper behind Dagnall and was the one O’s player showing fight in attack but shot wide after creating some good space on the edge of the box.

However, Hall showed his quality on the right, cutting in but shooting at Ciask as he searched for his hat-trick. But the winger didn’t have to wait long for his first senior hat-trick, firing home from the edge of the box just 4 minutes later to make it 5-0. Chris Dagnall was replaced by Gianvito Plasmati with one eye appearing to be on Tuesday nights clash at Spotland with Rochdale.

Plasmati did head at the keeper following the corner but normal service was resumed with the Dons in the asdencdancy. But with 20 minutes left Karl Robinson would have been left fuming when Jay Simpson cut in from the right and fired into the top corner loosing a clean sheet. But this seemed to anger the Dons who with Lewis Baker creating space on the edge of the box shooting at goal only to find the post in his way.

Orient were having a bit more joy but this was mainly due to the scoreline with Dons clearly looking to reserve energy for another key game against Doncaster on Tuesday. Baker was allowed more space once more outside the area and his dipping, curling shot was touched onto the bar by Ciask. But number 6 was no sooner in coming, Delli Alli was found on the edge of the box, beat Plasmati with ease and curled in a delightful sixth.

The Dons were a league above than the Orient today who had failed to turn up to a game again. The fans deserve better, Liverani apologized post match, but it will take a lot more than that for the fans. No fight, organisation, heart, togetherness was shown with relegation staring them directly in the face. Only they know why, Liverani deserved some stick but so do the 11 who put on the LOFC shirt every week. You can blame the chairman, manager, back room staff but who are the ones that cross the white line 46 games a season?

The Dons were hungrier, younger and wanted the result more, Robinson prides himself in giving youngsters a chance with yesterday 11 having an average age of 25.7. That includes three over 30’s in that 11 highlighting the need for experience with youth. Orient’s was 27 not much difference but the desire in the final third was apparent, the Dons front 6 23.3 average age whilst Orient 27.1 highlighted in goals 4,5,6.

It will be a big task to survive relegation now with Orient’s sitting 2 points from safety and suffering a thumping. Only time will tell but in 3rd May Orient could be back in League 2 after nine year period in the league above.

Where? How? Orient 2014/2015

With 4 games left to go, 2 points out of the last 9 available is not what you call survival form as Orient sit above the relegation zone on goal difference. A trip to MK Dons is far from what fans may think is a winnable game with the Dons unbeaten in their last 7 and closing in on Preston. Dependent on North End’s result tonight at Port Vale, the Dons with a win could move to second in the table and with a strong possibility of securing the second automatic spot.

All of these factors seem to be against the O’s who lost their 19th match of the season on Tuesday after another set piece which settles a match. How many more will their be this season?

Karl Robinson spoke pre match and talked about a game plan which his side is looking to implement during the game. My betting is it will be press Orient high as the O’s are not always the most comfortable in possession. With the Dons playing 4-2-3-1, based on the last couple of games, Orient will be overrun in midfield once again. A game changer with the Dons the second highest scorers in the league, they have the ability to cut Orient open.

Orient record this season:

Home and away record

With this, it is clear to see why Orient are in the predicament that they are. Poor home form with only 5 wins all season, it took till November to get their first win: 4-1 over Crewe. In fact when the O’s have recorded wins at Brisbane Road – they have always scored 3 goals. When Orient take their chances they pick up points- easy to point that out yes. But more concerning is the amount of miss chances we have had in recent weeks. Any fan that went to Crewe last weekend or was at Brisbane Road on Tuesday can illustrate this point.

Scored and Conceded

Orient can score goals but in games where they need to break the deadlock or have fallen behind they have struggled. In fact Orient are the top scorers with 55 out of the bottom 1 clubs with Scunthorpe scoring the same. Alongside their scoring record only Notts County out of the bottom 8 have conceded less putting Orient in a strong position for goal difference.

Separation of goals

However the major problem has been the nature of the goals conceded in matches this season. All Orient fans know how easy it can be to score against Orient both home and away. With Orient playing the second highest scorers tomorrow, the O’s will need to be on their guard otherwise they could be on the end of hammering with the Dons full of confidence.

Below is how goals were scored and conceded:

Goals scored

* Penalty at Notts County came after Clarke fouled from free kick

  • Orient scored 8 of their first 19 league goals from set pieces (2 penalties) but haven’t scored from a set piece not including a penalty
  • Orient didn’t concede a goal from a set piece excluding penalty at Notts County in first 13 games but since conceded 14 in 29 matches.
  • 14 of last 44 goals been from a set piece (31%) not including penalties (3)

Another major problem alongside set pieces has been the inability to defend crosses into their own box. Orient have conceded 27 of their 56 goals (48%) through crosses going into the box (pen at Notts C including).

How goals scored

Obviously scoring the first goal remains pivotal to the end result of the match, Orient’s records below when scoring and conceding the first goal:

Scoring and Condeded records

Lastly Orient have had this season problems conceding goals in certain time periods of matches. Goals in the remaining minutes have cost Orient points in certain games as Sheffield United despite grabbing an injury time equalizer. Record are below:

Minutes Goals scored

  • 48% Goals conceded from crosses into the box (27 out of 56) – 3 penalties
  • 30% Goals conceded from set pieces – 4 penalties
  • Only 12 points collected when conceded first goal – W3, D3, L17
  • 65% Orient’s Goals scored by strikers

All these statistics help to see why Orient are where they are? But main question is will they manage to escape relegation, we will find out on May 3rd.

One Last Push

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson has asked for one last push as side continue to pressurize second placed Preston. The Dons climbed to just 3 points behind second placed North End after a 3-0 win at Fleetwood in midweek after North End threw away a 2-0 home lead against Gillingham. Robinson speaking before the visit of Leyton Orient tomorrow said “One last push, 2 weeks to go , 4 games to go”.

Robinson stated that Preston’s result tonight against Port Vale has no relevance to his side “we have to win every game anyway, they have 4 games to slip up and that’s the way we have to look at it. We hold our own destiny and if we control ourselves and play to the best of our ability we can keep the pressure on “. The Dons have gone on a 7 match unbeaten streak, winning 5 and drawing 2 since their 2-0 home defeat to North End. Robinson added “we are really looking forward to the game, it is important we go in with full of confidence”.

  • Dons Home record – W13, D3, L4, F46, A17
  • Dons are the highest scorers at home in the division and only Bristol City (86) have scored more home and away
  • Only fail to score in 7 matches all season – 4 at home
  • Dons have 4 clean sheets in a row – conceding only 3 in last 7 matches
  • Have 21 clean sheets in the League – highest in league
  • 4 defeats at home – 2-0 (Preston), 2-1 (Chesterfield), 3-0 (Walsall) and 2-1 (Bradford)

With their 3-0 win in midweek, the Dons passed the 100 goal mark in all competitions thanks to Carl Baker, Will Grigg and Delli Alli. Robinson spoke on record about the change from last season with “it being a tremendous testament to the players. It has been a phenomenal year and say it has been my best year, my most enjoyable on and off the pitch”. With the Dons failing to make the play offs last season the 34 year old said the achievement is “purely and simply  by staff and players who all have worked extremely hard”.

The Dons host Leyton Orient tomorrow at Stadium MK, with the O’s without a win in their last 3 matches picking up just 2 points from a possible 9. Orient lost their 12th home game of the season on Tuesday to Doncaster thanks to Rob Jones’s 56th minute header. Jobi McAnuff and Marvin Bartley both pointed to the fact that “if we don’t take our chances invariably a team gets 1 or 2, they take it and nick the 3 points”. However with 3 out of their last 4 games away, pressure could be reduced as Orient have faired better on their travels this season.

  • Away Record – P20, W7, D6, L7, F26, A26
  • Last 4 away – W1, D1, L2 – F2, A3
  • 17 of their 19 league defeats been by 1 (10 defeats) or 2 goals (7 defeats)
  • Only scored 8 goals in last 7 matches
  • Failed to score in 15 games – 6 away from home and 2 of last 4 on their travels

Orient once again were outdone by a set piece goal on Tuesday night with Bartley stating “I don’t know why we concede from set pieces but if we did we put a stop to it”. The former Burnley midfielder was disappointed after the home defeat “we shouldn’t have to keep a clean sheet in order to get something out of games. We have to start scoring”. Orient had the first opportunities in the game through Dossena and Henderson but chances were missed. Bartley knows the predicament that his side are in “we got ourselves in this positions we have got to get ourselves out of it”.

  • 14 out of 55 goals conceded from set pieces (barring penalties)
  • Orient didn’t concede a set piece goal in first 13 matches
  • 14 set piece goals in last 29 matches – 14 of last 44 conceded

The trip to MK tomorrow starts the run of the last 4 games against sides in the promotion mix up but Bartley feels that “we can’t fear anybody, they are 4 games to go, at this stage of the season if you start fearing people, no point going out there. He added “on our day we can turn it on”. Despite Bartley’s optimism the statistics point to rather gloomy reading with Orient’s record against the top 9, compared to the Dons record against the bottom 9.

  • Orient against top 9 –P14, W1, D6, L7
  • But the O’s only lost game on the road (W1, D4, L1) – 2-0 at Barnsley
  • MK against bottom 9 –P16, W10, D5, L1 (2-1 at Coventry)

O’s boss Fabio Liverani says he side are ready to bounce back at Stadium MK “the players have showed great levels of determination and desire. Everyone is still positive and believes we can avoid relegation”. Liverani is weary of MK’s threat but said “we respect them but don’t fear them”. Telling words from the Orient boss but tomorrow will see after the outcome.

MK Dons will still be without Samir Carruthers and Ben Reeves who miss out through suspension and a calf injury respectively. However, Dean Bowditch and Carl Baker return after missing Tuesday’s win. Robinson praised his side after key men were missing at Fleetwood with special praise for on loan Chelsea midfielder Lewis Baker. “I love seeing young English players with that talent, left and right footed, going between the lines taking the game to them. Hits diagonal balls, drops in line, plays 1-2 touch, scores goals. He is brave and English”.

The Dons have a very young squad with an average age of just 23.2 years and Robinson is happy to give “young English players chance to play football, they don’t let you down”. In fact 19 out of their 27 man squad are 25 or under with only 4 players over the age of 30 keeping some experience in the squad. MK are free flowing in possession and full of goals playing predominantly a 4-2-3-1 system.

  • The attacking players have scored60 of MK 84 goals but 75 if you include Deli Alli’s contribution in attack.
  • Average age of attacking players just

Orient could recall Lloyd James to midfield after sitting out last two games while Liverani could rotate Chris Dagnall with the striker failing to score in his last 7 matches. The midfield battle could be key tomorrow with the Dons enjoying the majority of possession so Liverani could play 3 in central midfield.  McAnuff hinted at “a real edge to the game with both sides needing the result at different ends of the table”.

Points over performance is the phrase used at this time of the season with McAnuff agreeing that “it is just about getting points on the board, need to do whatever we need to do to make sure we can get them”.

The sides drew 0-0 earlier in the season back in October but there should be goals tomorrow at Stadium MK. The teams have played each other 6 times at Stadium MK, both picking up 3 wins a piece but Orient beat MK 3-1 in the final game of last season. The Dons are without a win in the last 4 meetings between the sides – losing 3 and drawing 1. Their last win was back in 2012, in a 1-0 win with Ryan Lowe grabbing the winner.
