Eavesy Does it For the Glovers

A Tom Eaves header 14 minutes from time, condemned Orient to a third home defeat in four games. After picking up four points on their travels after a 2-1 win at Morecambe and a 2-2 draw at Carlisle last weekend, all that was left was to back it up with a performance at Brisbane Road. Could it be done?

Well, it is not an unknown fact that Leyton Orient have struggled at home in recent years but with a side sitting 23rd in League Two and losing their previous five league matches, surely they could pick up a win?

Orient remained unchanged from their draw at Carlisle last weekend but were handed boosts with Nigel Atangana and Jay Simpson returning to the substitutes bench. Yeovil looking to prevent a sixth consecutive league defeat welcomed back captain Darren Ward for Alex Lawless who dropped to the bench.

Yeovil’s Starting 11

orient-vs-yeovil-homeIn a low key start, Orient could only muster half chances with Gavin Massey seeing a volley easily saved by Artur Krysiak in the Yeovil goal. The away side were looking to frustrate the O’s who had already lost at home twice this season to Mansfield and Newport County.

Yeovil manager Darren Way stated pre match “Orient will play physical, we will have to deal with that diaganol ball forward. They have threats in wide areas, Massey is very positive 1 vs 1″

Both Gavin Massey and Harry Cornick both had loan spells at Yeovil in recent years, “We know Gav and Harry as they were here. We saw what Harry was about last year, we have to make sure we stop Cornick early, preventing it from source”.

Yeovil Set Up

As you can see, Yeovil’s back four was set with Butcher giving protection to his center backs as the deep lying midfielder. Matt Dolan and Kevin Dawson, playing just in front of Butcher were sitting directly on Orient’s midfield two.

This prevented Orient’s central midfielders from picking the ball up playing forward to Harry Cornick and Gavin Massey on the wings. Time and time again, Weir and Kelly were put under pressure in possession, resulting in the ball being played wide to the full backs.

Way also spoke about Orient’s long balls forward which they dealt with very well all game. Helped by Butcher’s position in midfield.

Threats in Wide Areas

Both Harry Cornick and Gavin Massey have been threats throughout the season for Orient and was a major strength for Orient according to Way. With Way and Yeovil having some intelligence based that both Orient’s wingers had played for the Glovers in seasons gone by. Massey and Cornick struggled throughout to get involved in proceedings looking to come inside to receive the ball.

Yeovil’s full back’s Liam Shephard and man of the match Nathan Smith performed excellently against the wingers, listening directly to their manager. As soon as Massey and Cornick received the ball, their full back pressed them straight away preventing them from starting and building an attack.

Orient’s Weakness

Conceding goals has been a problem for the O’s for the past two seasons, however especially this season. Set pieces? Do Orient practice them? It appears that defending them in an Orient shirt appears the most difficult thing to do on a football pitch. Once more the O’s were undone by a set piece, a quick set pieces something that should never happen.

Alongside Orient’s vulnerability of conceding goals in the second half (8 of their 9 goals) and in the final 15 minutes of matches (5 of their 9 goals). Concentration, awareness…. who knows but the fact remains Orient have dropped 6 points in the final 15 minutes of matches and would sit 2nd in the division had games finished on 75 minutes.

Where did it go wrong?

corner-all-looking-away

Following a poor clearance by Aron Pollock giving away a corner to Yeovil, as the ball goes out of play, 5 of Orient’s players in the 18 yard box are not facing the ball. Why? Low concentration levels but with 15 minutes to go in a match, every set piece could prove pivotal and it proved just that…

Following a short corner routine which Alex Cisak revealed that Orient knew about before hand, Matt Butcher crossed to Tom Eaves who head home at the back post. With a spare man behind Eaves if had missed the ball, horrendous marking from the O’s who were rightfully punished.

What Could Orient have done Differently

From the outset, Yeovil had an extra man in midfield allowed them to press Orient higher resulting in the home side from continuing to go long. Why was there not a tactical change? With Nigel Atangana on the bench could Orient not have changed to a 4-3-3 formation matching up to Yeovil formation and giving them something to thing about.

orient-possible-change-against-yeovil

Jordan Bowery was ineffective throughout the first half, Andy Hessenthaler could have sacrificed Bowery to put Atangana into the midfield which would strengthen it up. This inclusion in the middle, allows Cornick and Massey freedom to roam to support McCallum in attack.

With Plymouth at home a week tomorrow, I sure Derek Adams would look at how Yeovil tactically set up on Saturday as let’s not pull any punches: they got it spot on.

“We Know What We’ve Got to Do”

Leyton Orient manager Andy Hessenthaler is hoping his side can replicate their away form when they face Yeovil Town at Brisbane Road tomorrow afternoon. The O’s are unbeaten on their travels so far this season after a 2-2 draw away at Carlisle last weekend but have struggled in front of their home fans.

  • League form – P7 W3 D2 L2 F11 A8
  • Unbeaten in their last three, winning two, drawing one

Orient twice took the lead at Brunton Park last weekend but conceded an 87th minute penalty preventing them from making it back to back away wins. Hessenthaler hinted that there was slight frustration that they couldn’t see the game out post match however speaking to leytonorient.com he credited the passion, work ethic and desire that his side showed in the game.

  • Seven of Orient’s eight goals conceded have been in the second half
  • 50% of the goals conceded have been in the final 15 minutes of matches
  • If games ended after 75 minutes, Orient would sit 1st after dropping five points from winning positions in the final 15 minute period

After back to back trips north to Morecambe and Carlisle; Orient will look forward to some home comforts this weekend. Hessenthaler’s men took four points from the two games away but acknowledges that his side need to take the form into their home games. Speaking post match to leytonorient.com “we are starting to take our chances if we keep creating chances we have to take them. We need to stop conceding silly goals and get it right for Saturday”.

  • Home record this season – P5 W2 D0 L3
  • Home form (most recent first) – WLWLL
  • Last home game – Leyton Orient 3-2 Stevenage – EFL Trophy

Paul McCallum and Harry Cornick both netted last weekend setting Orient up for the win before Liam Kelly handled in the box late on. Hessenthaler understands that his side will need to show use game management if they are to challenge this season. Speaking ahead of the Yeovil game tomorrow to leytonorient.com “we spoke on Monday about managing the game at certain periods and perhaps we didn’t do it as well as we should off”.

For the second game in succession, the O’s conceded within the first five minutes of the second half which defender Tom Parkes acknowledges needs to stop. Speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today “We said at half time, don’t concede early doors and we did just that but we got back in front with a great finish from Harry”

The lack of clean sheets have not gone unnoticed by Hessenthaler and Parkes who both highlighted that the team have be keen on improving that this week, “we have spoken about clean sheets, we need to start getting a few, I believe we will get goals in the team from all positions. If we can keep clean sheets, we will definitely score. We have talked and worked on it this week” Hessenthaler added “the more clean sheets you keep, the more you are going to win games, it is certainly what we have got to do”.

  • Orient have only kept one clean sheet in nine games this season – 3-0 win over Stevenage
  • Kept two clean sheets in their nine home games
  • Have conceded in four of their five home games this season
  • Nine of Orient 11 goals scored have been from midfielders
  • Orient have only failed to score in two of their last 14 matches in all competitions

Parkes who joined from Bristol Rovers in the summer has been an integral part of the defence in the early weeks of the season. The defender has settled well to life in London and with his team mates “we have a great bunch of lads here, we need to keep working hard, we jelled well and have a decent squad”. Parkes achieved back to back promotions with Bristol Rovers in the last two season and a key point for him to build on is their home form “normally teams are stronger at home and you try and nick things away from home. At the moment we are the opposite, we need to start turning it around on Saturday to try and build a platform”.

  • Orient have won 18 of their last 20 games when scoring first
  • Have only lost 1 of their last 26 games scoring first (Exeter 3-1 16/01/16)
  • All 11 of their points this season have come scoring first
  • In fact, 42 of Orient 44 points in 2016 have come when scoring first
  • Without a win in their last 13 conceding first – W0 D2 L11
  • Have just one win in their last 27 conceding first – Portsmouth 3-2 26/12/2015
  • W1 D9 L17

Orient faced Yeovil on the final day of last season but a lot has changed at both clubs over the summer. Despite tomorrow’s visitors sitting in the bottom two, the Orient boss is still expecting a tough test, “they are on a bit of a sticky run, they will come and sit and make it difficult for us. Darren is a young manager who is just coming into management, they have a small budget and a few injuries so it has been difficult for them”. He continued “He will have them set up right, we know what we’ve got to do, be patient, play with a good tempo and hopefully get the three points”.

Yeovil arrive in E10 on the back of a 2-1 home to defeat to Hartlepool last weekend; their fifth consecutive league defeat. Two late goals from Pool at Huish Park leaves Yeovil in 23rd place with just four points. The Glovers started the season well with two wins in their first three games in all competitions but since mid August they have lost six of their last seven games.

  • Have won only 1 of their last 8 games in all competitions – F2 A11 (4-3 vs Portsmouth , EFL Trophy)
  • League Record – P7 W1 D1 L5 F5 A12
  • Away record this season (all competitions) – P5 W1 D1 L3
  • Last away games (most recent first) – LLLDWDLDLW

Despite the home defeat last weekend, manager Darren Way didn’t think his side deserved to lose. Speaking post match to ytfc.net “it is disappointing, I don’t think the players deserved to lose that 2-1. The first goal was very costly, it feels that way at the moment. The players are getting deflated when one goal goes in, that game should have never been two goals”. Way added “I have to make sure as a manager to work hard with the players and stop the goals going in, it was our base last year; if you don’t let goals in, you don’t lose games”

  • Have conceded at least 2 goals in their last 5 games  – 16 in total
  • Only kept two clean sheets in 10 games this season
  • Only one in their last 8 games
  • Kept just three in their last 15 games in all competitions
  • However, they kept 14 clean sheets last season, only Wycombe (17), Portsmouth (16), Oxford (16) and Northampton (15) kept more

Way was appointed at the turn of the year with the aim of keeping the Glovers in League Two, which he achieved however it is now a testing time for the 36 year old. Post match Way stated “obviously it is my first spell as a manager with the run of defeats like we’ve had. I have to make sure I respond and react to stay strong and make sure the players see through this faze”

  • Away League record last season – P23 W5 D6 L12 F20 A32
  • Only York scored less than them away last season
  • Only scored 48 goals in their last 53 leagues games since start of 2015/2016 season
  • Failed to score in 21 of their last 53 league games – including three of their last six

Way doesn’t mind how his side find their much needed win, “a win is a win, we have got to do whatever we can to get it soon”. With injuries to some of his experienced players, Way knows that it is important to keep the younger player believing in what he is trying to do, “it has been difficult at times, we have lost a bit of experience which means relying on a lot of younger players that haven’t had that pressure of dealing with league two football on a regular basis”

  • Four of Yeovil’s starting 11 against Hartlepool were aged 21 or under
  • Seven of Yeovil’s 11 wins last season were by a 1-0 scoreline

With just six points separating Yeovil in 23rd and Stevenage in 12th, Way acknowledges that there is not a great gap at the moment and a couple of wins you are right back in amongst the middle of the table. However the difference in the majority for the Glovers boss has been “in both boxes”. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game in Leyton, “we have had a lot of final third entry but not the end product. We have been asking the strikers to be confident and positive with the midfielders looking to shoot. We feel it is a matter of time with a little bit of luck that our fortunes will change”.

  • Have only won one of their last 11 conceding first – W1 D1 L9
  • Have only lost one of their last 11 scoring first – W7 D3 L1

Defender Alex Lacey returned in last week’s defeat from a broken arm and was delighted to back involved within the side. Speaking on tomorrow’s opposition Leyton Orient to ytfc.netwe have watched clips on them, they seem a direct side with quite a few long balls forward to the back four. It will be a tough test especially at the back to keep a clean sheet”

A familiar face for Lacey and Way will be facing former teammate Harry Cornick who spent last season on loan at Huish Park. Lacey is excited to see Cornick again however knows that both sides have some inside information on each other, “he knows how we play and the manager’s style of play, but we know how he likes to work”.

Way  pulled no punches of what he expects from Orient tomorrow afternoon, “we don’t know how physical Orient will play but we will have to deal with the long diagnol ball which we have always had to deal with when coming to play Orient. We know both Gav (Massey) and Harry who were both here, the threat in wide areas we will have to deal with especially Massey who is very positive 1 vs 1. Harry was here last year and we all saw what he was about, we have to make sure we stop it at source and get there early”.

Team News

Jay Simpson and Nigel Atangana could both be back in contention after takig part in training this week after missing the last couple of games with back and groin injuries  respectively. Harry Cornick and Gavin Massey look set to face one of their former clubs with Jordan Bowery set to continue partnering Paul McCallum in attack.

Alex Lacey looks set to keep his place in defence after completing his comeback from a broken arm last weekend while Ollie Bassett will not be included having joined non league Dorchester Town this week. Josh Ezewele and Darren Ward will be both be available after recovering from knee injuries while the only doubt for the Glovers will be Ryan Dickson and Francois Zoko

Late Penalty prevents Back to Back Wins

Danny Grainger’s penalty three minutes from time ensured Carlisle maintained their unbeaten start to the season. Grainger slotted home from the spot after Liam Kelly handled inside the box. Paul McCallum gave the O’s the lead on the stroke of half time before half time substitute Charlie Wyke tapped home 20 seconds after the restart. Orient responded when Harry Cornick fired home after a mazy run inside the box before Grainger’s penalty shared the spoils.

Carlisle made two changes from the side that drew 1-1 at home to Accrington last weekend. Shaun Miller came in for former Orient striker Jabo Ibehre who dropped to the bench while Reggie Lambe dropped out for Mark Ellis who slotted into a back three for the hosts.

Orient who had the best away record in the division named an unchanged team from their 2-1 victory at Morecambe last weekend. Fresh from his first goal for the O’s last week, Jordan Bowery continued to partner Paul McCallum in attack.

orient-at-carlisle

Orient’s Starting 11

Carlisle who remained the only unbeaten side in the division started on the front foot keeping the majority of the possession. With their 3-5-1-1 system, the Cumbrians always had an option on the flanks through Tom Miller and Danny Grainger. Shaun Miller saw an effort blocked early on for the hosts with their set pieces especially their long throws causing the away side problems.

Paul McCallum had Orient’s first shot of note but Mark Gillespie saved easily down to his left. Orient were sitting back letting Carlisle have the ball in midfield but looking to break if the opportunity came about. Liam Kelly was looking to make it four in four but blazed well over from distance before wasting a great chance for Orient just before the half hour. Following a good move, Robbie Weir found Gavin Massey on the right, the former Colchester winger pulled the ball back to the onrushing Kelly who blazed over from inside the box.

After the half hour mark, Carlisle started to turn up the heat forcing the O’s further and further back. Nicky Adams who was popping up in between the lines found space on the edge of the box but the former Northampton winger saw his shot curl on the post and away. Shaun Miller was next to try his luck but his effort sailed straight into the arms of Alex Cisak.. The hosts were creating chances but were inches away from connecting crosses on numerous occasions.

Orient were finding it hard to get out of their half but as time ticked down to half time, the away side started to put their foot on the ball. Callum Kennedy who had recently regained his place in the starting 11 advanced down the left but his cross was mistimed by Paul McCallum who headed wide of the mark. Carlisle seemed to be settling for 0-0 at the break but Orient had other ideas, Robbie Weir found Jordan Bowery in space. The former Oxford man played in Paul McCallum inside the area and the Orient striker made no mistake firing underneath Gillespie to give the away side the lead.

Despite enjoying large spells of possession, Carlisle had failed to convert possession into goals. Keith Curle wasted no time bringing on Reggie Lambe and Charlie Wyke at the break as his side move to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation. The change in formation offered rewards in seconds, Shaun Miller progressed down the right and his cross found an unmarked Wyke who tapped home 20 seconds into the second half.

carlisle-home-to-orient-2nd-half

Carlisle’s Second Half Formation

A perfect start to the half for the hosts who could have completed the turnaround three minutes into the second period. Adams who moved to a left wing position cut in from his flank but his dipping effort was brilliantly tipped over by Cisak as the away side looked rattled.

With the change in shape for the hosts, more space was presented in the midfield with both sides looking to push forward. Paul McCallum, the recent long throw specialist, was causing problems with Weir blazing a half chance over. Following a McCallum throw, Massey found space at the back post but his ball back to Weir was blazed over the stand.

Ollie Palmer replaced Jordan Bowery who had been struggling since a heavy collision with Gillesphie in the first half. The former Mansfield striker was straight into the action, good work from the busy Harry Cornick down the right created space but his cross was behind Palmer who could only head wide.

Cornick continued to be a threat for the O’s down the right side and put his side back ahead with a goal that he will cherish for a while. Receiving the ball on the wing, the man on loan from Bournemouth jinked his way into the box. With Carlisle’s defenders standing off, Cornick broke into the six yard box driving the ball into the far corner for his first Orient goal.

Andy Hessenthaler’s men grew in confidence after regaining the lead with Cornick seeing an effort from distance deflected wide for a corner. Carlisle threw on Jabo Ibehere in place of Shuan Miller as looked to maintain their unbeaten record. With Orient continuing to sit back in defence they were inviting pressure on to them.

Charlie Wyke could only graze the side netting following a cross from the right but the nerves amongst the Orient faithful remained. Sandro Semedo replaced Paul McCallum as Cornick moved to a no 10 role behind Ollie Palmer. The hosts were throwing everything at Orient who looked very nervy in defence and crumbled three minutes from time. After a break down the right substitute Reggie Lambe was played in, his cross appeared to be handled by Liam Kelly as he slid to block the cross. Referee Ben Toner wasted little time in pointing to the spot, Danny Grainger stepped up and fired the ball home to level proceedings once more.

dsc_0122

Orient looked to hold on for a point while Carlisle searched for a winner as five minutes were added on. Neither side were able to muster a late chance and settled for a share of the spoils, leaving both sides just outside the playoffs in 8th and 9th respectively.

A draw away at Carlisle, a side unbeaten in their opening five matches, would you have taken a point. I certainly would have done, Keith Curle has built a good squad at Brunton Park and they were the best side Orient have faced so far this season. Surprisingly once they changed system to a 4-4-2 they began to trouble Orient more defensively but is that exactly that difficult. A team which passes the ball around very nicely looking to create overloads on the flanks with runners from midfield.

Four points from two long trips to Morecambe and Carlilse is a great return but the fact remains that these results need to be backed up at Brisbane Road in the coming weeks. It was by far a classic at Brunton Park despite the 2-2 scoreline, the game certainly livened up just before the break.

It was a tale of a frantic two minutes in which Orient scored just before half time, the perfect time to score, well it is unless you concede 20 seconds into the second half. The second time in a week which Orient have led at the break but relinquished it within five minutes of the second half. What is said in the teamtalk? Lessons have not been learnt in the last week which presented Carlisle with the carrot dangled for the three points.

Orient still show worrying signs at the back with the inability to keep a clean sheet. The O’s have only kept 1 clean sheet in nine matches this season. Despite creating going forward and scoring goals, the defence frailties which have troubled them in recent seasons continue to be at the fore.

Game management, a term which must be added to Orient’s dictionary. The ability to be able to give them themselves the platform when leading in a game and seeing the game out which they did at Morecambe last weekend, but having to score two goals in the process. That remains an issue, with Orient’s backline, the fact remains Orient have to score at least twice to win a game.

Going forward, Harry Cornick remains a real threat and the Bournemouth loanee definitely has a future at a higher level. The youngster ran his socks off down the right, grabbing a goal which he richly deserved for his display. However, with Liam Kelly and Robbie Weir in the centre of midfield in the absence of the injured Nigel Atangana, they still seemed very very similar. Nigel offers something different than Kelly and Weir who is still regaining full fitness. In the first half Orient’s midfield duo were outnumbered by Carlisle’s midfield which caused problems.

It is still work in progress at Brisbane Road but the absence of Andy Hessenthaler on the touchline when Orient are under pressure does not provide you with confidence in the stands. At times, it was clear to see what Carlisle were planning to do but Hess appeared content with sitting on the bench.

It was a point gained in Orient’s attempt to return to the third tier of English football but when 2-1 up away from home with only three minutes to go, your team should be able to hold on. Well, we are Leyton Orient and anything is possible, the last three seasons just proves that.

Onwards and upwards, the key is to pick up results at home which builds on Orient’s unbeaten away form. Yeovil up next Saturday, a game which the O’s will be heavy favourites but will they have the ability to break the Glovers down.

Two long trips in a week north, two early starts and late nights but what is better than following your side up and down the country? It still remains it is the hope that kills you…. all too well if you support Leyton Orient.

“Let’s See What We’re About This Year”

Leyton Orient’s first team captain Robbie Weir insists his side are more than capable of picking about a result at Carlilse tomorrow. The O’s travel North to face the Cumbrians following a 2-1 victory at Morecambe last weekend.

Weir regained his place in the side following an illness at the start of the season and is glad to be back in the side “it is always good to get back playing, I feel a lot lot better”.  Weir is keen for his side to continue the winning habit. Speaking ahead of the game tomorrow to leytonorient.com the more games you win the more is becomes a habit. Hopefully we can build on last week’ s win and go on a run”.

Last week’s victory in Morecambe was described as “tremendous” by manager Andy Hessenthaler after the game. Liam Kelly struck is third in as many games before Jordan Bowery sealed victory with his first for the club. Hessenthaler stated to leytonorient.comit was the best performance of the season without a doubt. To come away from home against top of the table, we knew it was going to be difficult, I thought from 1-11 we were outstanding”.

Despite victory, Orient still failed to keep a clean sheet however the reaction from his side after Morecambe leveled delighted the O’s boss, “the goal is disappointing, at half time were saying all the right things but five minute later we concede. It is avoidable but to respond in the way we did. I always thought we had goals in us, the front two were a handful, the two wide men were up and down and it was all round a very good performance”.

  • Orient have only kept 1 clean sheet in 8 games this season
  • Have conceded in all three of their away games so far

Assistant manager Andy Edwards praised the Orient squad ahead of tomorrow’s trip, speaking to leytonorient.comwe have a very good spirit amongst the boys, we have an excellent group, it is not the biggest but is very positive”. Five of the seven Orient’s substitutes named at Morecambe came through the club’s academy which Edwards’s was especially pleased with “there has been a lot of hard work over the years, the boys have put in the graft and they are getting a opportunity. Hopefully they can go in and establish themselves”

Weir is hoping his side can build on their recent wins against Stevenage and Morecambe, “it was a massive result last week and hoping we can show that tomorrow, we have been sharp in training”. After ending one team’s unbeaten record last week, Weir is keen to do the same tomorrow, “they are the only unbeaten team in the league, it will be a tough place to go. We can go there and make a statement. Let’s see what we’re about this year”.

Carlisle head into tomorrow’s clash with Orient after a 1-1 home draw with Accrington last weekend with Nicky Adams grabbing a point for the Cumbrians. Carlisle are the only team not to lose in the division so far with manager Keith Curle keen for the run to continue.

  • Sit 9th on 10 points
  • Won two and drew four of their opening six games
  • 5 different scorers
  • Last home games (most recent first) – DDWWLLLW

Despite falling behind, Curle felt his side should have beat Stanley but described it as a “point gained”Speaking to carlisleunited.co.uk post match “we had enough chances to win the game but it shows the strength about the group both physically and mentally, we face challenges head on”. Curle continued “the pleasing thing is we are still undefeated, the players are coming off the back of an intensive period covering a lot if games and mentally it does take its toll”.

  • A tough run of fixtures face Orient, Blackpool, Wycombe and Doncaster in next four games
  • They have scored in all nine of their games so far this season
  • Only failed to score in one of their last 14 home games (0-2 vs Oxford)

Curle was critical of Accrington’s game plan describing them as “spoiling the game” but understands that his side needs to earn the right to play.”We have got good players who believe in what we are trying to do, today we give Stanley credit”.

Goalscorer Nicky Adams praised the togetherness of the squad after the draw last weekend speaking to carlisleunited.co.ukit is similar to what we had last year, we have good comardery where everyone gets on well. We all get on together but we understand that when we are the pitch, it is work time”

Adams joined the Cumbrians in the summer after gaining promotion with Northampton last season and doesn’t see why he can’t add another one to his CV, “there is a long way to go, it is early days and we will keep grounded. We do our own business, there are good teams in the league but we have a really good squad and don’t fear anyone. Collectively we will always create chances and score goals”

The summer saw Curle build a very decent squad at Brunton Park with Adams highlighting “we have so many talented footballers all through the squad. The lads who are not even playing are disappointed but get right behind us. We have real strength in depth, competition for places is always good and healthy”

With his side unbeaten, Curle still sees his side with work to do. Speaking ahead of tomorrow to carlisleunited.co.uk we are not keeping a clean sheet, there is still work to be done, there are different ways to lose games as there to winning games. We always give a level of respect to the opposition who may come here frustrate us and look to quieten the crowd”. He added “if we score first, they have to go to plan b where they have to come out and play football. Our challenge is maintaining the clean sheet but being a goal threat not leaving us exposed at the back”

  • Kept only two clean sheets in nine this season

The first goal tomorrow will prove crucial in the encounter, below is Carlisle and Leyton Orient’s recent record of when scoring first and conceding first:

carlisle-scoring-and-conceding-first-record

Carlisle’s record since August 2014 when scoring and conceding the first goal

  • Carlisle have not lost in last 16 games when scoring first – W10 D6
  • Without a win in their last 10 when conceding first
orient-scoring-first-conceding-first-before-carlisle-away-09092016

Leyton Orient’s record since August 2014 when scoring and conceding the first goal

  • Only won 4 of their last 48 games when conceding the first goal
  • Orient have lost 11 of their last 13 games when conceding first
  • Orient have won 13 of their last 14 games when scoring first – W13 D1

Hessenhaler and Curle went to blows last season when the sides met but Curle stated that all is well between them. Curle describe Orient as a replica of their manager, “The O’s are a team that replicate their manager: aggressive, combative and like a little rottweiler. They won’t give anything away”. Curle continued “This game will be about which team takes enough information on from their managers. We want to go on the front foot but they will be trying to stop us at every opportunity”.

Professional O’s See off the Shrimps

Jordan Bowery first Leyton Orient goal helped topple league leaders Morecambe. Bowery’s deflected effort nine minutes into the second half ensured Orient maintained their unbeaten away record. Liam Kelly netted his third in three games after his curling effort deceived Barry Roche in the Shrimps goal. Kevin Ellison restored parity early in the second half before Bowery’s first goal in a O’s shirt sealed victory.

Top of the table Morecambe made five changes from their side that lost 4-1 to Bury in the EFL trophy in midweek. Barry Roche returned in goal in place of Daniel Nizic who dropped down to the bench. Tom Barkhuizen, Jack Dunn, Cole Stockton and Michael Rose all returned to the starting 11 to welcome the visit of Orient.

Morecambe home to Orient

Orient who beat Stevenage 3-1 on Tuesday night made four changes from that side. Alex Cisak returned in goal with Sam Sargeant dropping to the bench. Gavin Massey and Liam Kelly returned in midfield with Nigel Atangana missing through injury and Sandro Semedo dropping to the bench. While Yvan Erichot starting in place of Aron Pollock in defence.

Orient at Morecambe

Orient who were unbeaten on their travels began the game well, pressing their hosts high to prevent them from passing their way out. Robbie Weir and Liam Kelly were leading the pressing in the O’s midfield with the rest of the team joining. However it was the hosts who had the first shot of the match when Cole Stockton found space in the area but the on loan Tranmere man dragged his shot wide.

Both sides were struggling to find space to pass the ball around in the midfield but the freedom of Morecambe attacking quartet was asking questions of the O’s backline. Kevin Ellison and Tom Barkhuizen were making runs from outside to in allowing space for their full backs to advance with left back Aaron McGowan free on many occasions.

Cisak was called into action after 18 minutes when Kevin Ellison’s run to the right channel and shot caused Cisak to punch the ball away with O’s right back Nicky Hunt forced to clear away under pressure from Morecambe. The O’s did start to bring the ball down with Jordan Bowery seeing an effort deflected for a corner after a good move down the right for the away side.

As Orient grew into the game they took the lead just before the half hour mark with Liam Kelly grabbing his third in as many games. After bringing the ball down outside the penalty area, the former Oldham captain curled an effort towards goal which bounced over the hands of Barry Roche and into the net.

Gaining confidence from his scoring streak, Kelly then volleyed over after linking well with Harry Cornick down the right. Morecambe were struggling to create going forward with both Orient full backs: Nicky Hunt and Callum Kennedy looking very comfortable.

Leading at the break, Orient looked to push for a second right at the start of the second half but found Roche in inspired form. Three minutes after the interval, Roche saved brilliantly down to his right after a Robbie Weir effort was deflected on goal.

However, the hosts responded well drawing level just a minute later, indecision between Tom Parkes and Yvan Erichot in the O’s backline saw Ellison pounce. The wide man coming in from his left wing berth picked the ball up just outside the area and his deflected effort flew past Cisak to level proceedings.

But it was the away side who were the livelier after the equaliser with Bowery nearly restoring Orient’s one goal lead almost immediately. Following an exquisite through ball from captain Robbie Weir, Bowery advanced on goal but his low shot was tipped behind by Roche.

The away side did grab a deserved second, after a ball forward, striker Paul McCallum pounced on a second ball. His touch fell to Bowery inside the box, the former Oxford man pushed the ball to the side with his shot deflected beyond Roche to put Orient back ahead.

Orient continued with their attack on the home sides goal with Liam Kelly seeing an effort saved from point blank range before Paul McCallum’s effort from a Cornick cross when inches wide. Michael Rose fired wide from distance before Orient should have had a penalty when it appeared McCallum was hauled down at the back post. Great work from French centre back, Yvan Erichot who advanced forward and played the ball back to Cornick who crossed for McCallum.

With Orient continuing to see chances come and go with Parkes seeing a header saved whilst a well worked corner saw Yvan Erichot back post header tipped away, Orient fans were still nervous in the away end. Home manager Jim Bentley threw on Rhys Turner and Alex Kenyon to look for a response however Orient appeared comfortable.

Roche continued thwarting Orient’s attempt for a third when McCallum wondered what he had to do to score. After clever work down the right from Cornick saw his header find McCallum who’s volley from close range was pushed away by Roche’s legs.

Massey and Bowery saw late efforts saved and blocked respectively however with only a one goal lead, Orient nerves remained in evidence. With Morecambe throwing everything forward in the dying minutes, the away side held strong once more gaining three valuable points in their search for promotion.

Another crazy week in the life of Leyton Orient football club, how many of them have we had recently? But times move on, in a week where long serving winger Dean Cox was released a day after the transfer window and a injured French defender was signed on a three year contract.

Times move on, and what a professional performance from every Orient player today. From keeper to striker, every player knew their roles and responsibilities including from set pieces. Callum Kennedy continued at left back after his performance in midweek, with the former Wimbledon showing exactly the quality his has to offer. Comfortable, confident and solid in defence and the ability to get forward, putting in great crosses.

The centre half partnership of Erichot and Parkes is continuing to grow and develop as they play more games together. Massey and Cornick showed their attacking intent and the thrat that they cause opposition defences throughout. Bowery netted his first goal for Orient and how pivotable could it prove to be. He has struggled at the start of his O’s career but his confidence was given an instant boost after he opened his account.

Paul McCallum looked after for the game highlighting his credentials for being first choice striker with Liam Kelly continuing his great work in the O’s midfield. Breaking up play and pitching in with another goal to give Orient a foothold in proceeding.

However the two standout performances were from Birthday boy, Nicky Hunt and captain Robbie Weir. People may have looked surprisingly at the decision to release Sean Clohessy earlier in the week but on today’s evidence Hunt showed the quality and experience he has to help the team. Game management from Hunt was evident throughout which breeds confidence in the O’s side.

But Weir who would be first to say he struggled in the opening weeks of the season showed why he was brought in. Following his arrival he would have thought his position as first choice central midfielder was nailed on however the early season form of Nigel Atangana seems to have kicked him into gear. Weir’s vision in the second half helped Orient push forward with his game management and experience of League Two providing a solid base in defence.

Three points against the league leaders gives everyone a smile especially with the performance of the whole team. A tough place to go but with Orient unbeaten in their first three away games, they highlighted that they can go anywhere and pick a result up. The home form will be next on the agenda to improve but it is clear to see that Orient have the ability to be a great side away from home providing that they defend well. The quality they have in attack should do the rest.

Carlisle away next weekend up is next up, a long journey north on the train but after a tough week, everyone needs to finally move on and look to the future. No-one knows where the journey will take us, but all I know is Brunton Park is next up and I’ll be there.

“Be Hard to Play Against, We Will Get the Right Result”

Leyton Orient face a tricky trip to early League leaders Morecambe tomorrow with the O’s boss knowing that his side must be hard to play against in order to get a result. Orient bounced back from a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Mansfield last weekend with a 3-1 win in the EFL trophy in midweek.

Hessenthaler rotated his squad giving some of his squad players a chance to impress with plenty doing just that. Speaking ahead of the trip north tomorrow to leytonorient.com “Tuesday was the perfect opportunity for people to play who hadn’t been playing in the team and it has given me plenty of food for thought ahead of Morecambe”.

Paul McCallum bagged a brace against Stevenage to make his season tally to four goals after scoring twice vs Fulham earlier in the campaign. The striker who is showing the form of last season before his injury, with Hessenthaler pleased for the former West Ham trainee. Speaking after Tuesday’s win, Hessenthaler stated to leytonorient.com it was great for Paul, his fitness levels are getting better and better, he needed that 90 minutes. He worked his socks off, with Paul we need to get the balls in the box, he will head them in and be in the right place”

Along with McCallum, Semedo was pushed into a more attacking position after starting the season at left back. Both Semedo and Harry Cornick caused Stevenage all kinds of problems down the flanks with all three goals scored from crosses into the box. Cornick who has been in impressive form since his loan move from Bournemouth in the summer revealed that Hessenthaler asked them to put crosses in and the strikers would do the rest.

Cornick who can play on either wing was pleased with the overall team performance which gave them their first home win of the season. Speaking post match to leytonorient.com it was a much better performance, we kept the ball a lot better, we had better shape off the ball and once we had the ball we can play teams off the park”.

Club captain Nicky Hunt also gave high praise to Orient’s attacking players ahead of tomorrow game, speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today “we have got wingers who have got real pace, power, good delivery and the ability to score goals. They are starting to terrorize defenders and there are not a lot of full backs in the league that will want to face them”.

Hunt missed the start of the campaign after suffering an ankle injury at the end of pre season but is happy to have regained his place in the side. Hunt stated that his side needed the result on Tuesday to put the defeat to the back of their mind but knows that it will e a tough test tomorrow. “It is a massive game against top of the table Morecambe. They have started the past 4/5 season well well but we have a lot of quality in the squad to go anywhere to get results. We showed that at Grimsby, the squad is more than capable of getting the win but we will take it one game at a time”.

Morecambe Opening 6 games

Morecambe’s last five seasons record and positions after six games

One man that Hessenthaler will not be able to call upon is winger Dean Cox who left the club on Thursday after his contract was cancelled. Sean Clohessy and Scott Kashket also left the club in midweek.

Morecambe head into tomorrow’s clash sitting two points clear at the top of League two after four consecutive wins. Last weekend they fought back from 2-0 down away at Accrington to win 3-2 to cement their place at the top. In midweek they suffered a 4-1 defeat at Bury in the EFL trophy where manager Jim Bentley rotated his squad.

  • Sit two points above second placed Luton Town
  • Five different scorers with Kevin Ellison (2) and Cole Stockton (2) top scorers

Despite the EFl trophy having a mixed reception with its new format amongst clubs, managers and players, Bentley stated that their changes were enforced on them. Speaking post match to morecambefc.com “If you look at it, I work with the players every day and we had a few changes enforced on us, Cole Stockton (tight groin), Conlon (International duty), Barry Roche (dead leg)”.

  • Two home league games so far this season – Portsmouth (2-0 W), Blackpool (2-1)
  • Five of their Eight games this seasons have seen both teams scored
  • Scored 8, Conceded 5

Bentley felt that Tuesday result was bound to come at some point with how much effort his side had put in during recent weeks, “sometimes you find a game where you hit a brick wall. We put in a mammoth amount of energy, commitment against Bournemouth. We went into Accrington afterwards which was a massive ask, with the local derby and the psychology around it” .

  • Last home games (most recent first) – LWWDLLW
  • Failed to keep a clean sheet in 12 of their last 16 games

However the defeat has not dampened his mood “there have been plenty of positives for us, we don’t want people to be doom and gloom. We have been fantastic in the month of August and we are confident and positive going into Saturday’s game”. He added “Tonight they shared us in all departments, they were sharper, stronger and fresher. They are a league above but credit to them they deserved to win the game”.

After back to back away wins in the league over Accrington and Yeovil, Bentley is hoping the town of Morecambe come and support his top of the table side. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash to morecambefc.comHopefully they can come out and support us, we are top of the table. A great month first but now we want to start the new month in fine fashion”.

Green Has Last Laugh

Matt Green’s late winner sealed victory for Mansfield at Brisbane Road. Green who was subject to an apparent £500,000 bid from Orient earlier in the week blazed a first half penalty over before being on hand at the back post one minute from time to stroke home the winner. Mitchell Rose opened the scoring in the second half lashing home at the back post. Liam Kelly equalised for the home side just five minutes later. But Green who could till leave the Stags before the transfer window ends fired home to inflict misery on the O’s.

Following back to back wins, O’s boss Andy Hessenthaler made only one change to the side that won 2-1 at Grimsby last weekend. Ollie Palmer came in as the lone front man with Jordan Bowery dropping down to the bench. Last seasons top scorer Jay Simpson remained unavailable due to a back injury.

Orient 1st half home to Mansfield

After suffering their first league defeat to Plymouth last week, manager Adam Murray made two changes to his side. Krystian Pearce made his first start of the season in defence, in place of Chris Clements who was out with a hamstring injury. While Darius Henderson started against his former club in place of Ashley Hemmings who dropped to the bench.

Mansfield away at Orient

In a low key start, neither side failed to test their opposition goalkeepers in the opening exchanges. Ollie Palmer who was starting against his former club had the first real but his header from Harry Cornick’s right wing cross flew wide. Palmer who netted his first of the season last weekend, really should have made it two on the quarter hour mark. After a good move down the left, Sandro Semedo crossed, the loose ball fell to Palmer but the striker snatched his effort which flew high over the bar.

With attention on Matt Green who was subject to an apparent bid from Orient on Friday, you knew that he would be involved in the action. However after a long ball froward was flicked on by Henderson, Green could only volley well wide of the target. The game was livening up with both sides having sighters on goal with Gavin Massey curling effort wide of Brian Jensen post.

Orient’s frailty from set piece would be their undoing once more, after a corner was only half cleared, Mansfield defender Krystian Pearce picked the ball up. He skipped past two before O’s center half Yvan Erichot brought him down with referee Kevin Johnson pointing to the spot.

Green stepped up and with the spotlight right on him, he blazed his spotkick high over the bar keeping the scores level. The penalty had rocked the home side who were gifting chances to their opponents at will. Kevan Hurst fired an effort from distance which Alex Cisak tipped over. From the resulting corner Tom Parkes had to be on hand to clear Pearce’s goal bound header.

Following a frantic period of play, Hessenthaler called for his side to calm down when in possession. The game was ebbing towards half time when another corner caused the O’s problems when Pearce headed down to his defence partner Kyle Hawkins who fired over.

Neither side made changes at the interval but Henderson was replaced by CJ Hamilton early in the second half. Orient’s play still lacked tempo and pace, playing right into the hands of the Stags. Tom Parkes flashed a header wide after connecting with a Dean Cox corner before Mansfield nearly went ahead. With Pearce causing yet more problems from set pieces, his header was brilliantly tipped away by Cisak in the Orient goal.

Orient made a double chance with Paul McCallum and Jordan Bowery entering the fray for Ollie Palmer and Harry Cornick as the hosts moved to 4-4-2.

Orient 2nd half home to Mansfield

However just eight minutes later, the visitors struck into all to familiar fashion. Kevan Hurst cut in from the left flank, his deep in swinging cross deceived Semedo at the back post who left Mitchell Rose unmarked and the midfielder punished the mistake to fire his side into the lead.

The goal attempted to wake the home side up with the fans asking for the ball to feet and on the floor. And just five minutes after the opener, Orient drew level through Liam Kelly. Following a nice move down the right, Nigel Atangana found Jordan Bowery with his back to goal, the substitute laid off to Kelly on the edge of the area who passed the ball home.

Both sides searched for a winner but it wasn’t until a minute from time when the Stags struck. And you’ve guessed it, it had to be Matt Green. Malvin Benning’s left wing cross found Rose who pounced in front of Semedo to knock the ball to Green. Green had drifted off O’s defender Yvan Erichot and finished low beyond Ciska to ensure he had the last laugh.

“Keep Moving Forward”

Leyton Orient midfielder Liam Kelly has urged his side to keep looking forward to the next game as his side set their sights on promotion this season. Kelly netted in Orient’s 2-1 victory at Grimsby last weekend, sealing back to back wins for the East London side.

Kelly who joined from Oldham Athletic in the summer has settled in well to life in E10 but is clear what the aims are this season. Speaking to leytonorientcom ahead of tomorrow’s game against Mansfield, “we want to be getting ourselves out of the division, we have got to win games to do that, we have done that twice in a row, now going into Saturday we are looking to win again. We will concentrate on ourselves and what we can do”

Kelly dropped down a division to sign for Orient and thinks that it will be a tough battle at the top of the league, “The league is going to be tight this season, I don’t think there will be a lot between teams” The former Oldham captain, has highlighted that consistency is paramount for a promotion bid, “the most consistent teams will end up winning the league or getting promoted and is what we have to try and be. Our performances need to be consistent, try and keep a clean sheet and be clinical at the other end. If we do that I can see us doing well”.

The O’s ground out a win at Grimsby after being far from their best in the first half at Blundell Park with Andy Hessenthaler praising the performance of keeper Alex Cisak. Speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today, “Alex’s done fantastic in the first half to keep it at 0-0, we have things to work on but I thought we showed great character and resilience”

Hessenthaler’s side punished two mistakes in the second half with the O’s boss acknowledging that his side will need to grind out results throughout the season, “we worked hard as a group and in the end we ground out the result. We will have to do that this season, when you get away from home, hang in there and be clinical”.

Along with Kelly, Ollie Palmer netted his first goal of the season last weekend with Hessenthaler pleased that his front man opened his account, “I was really pleased for Ollie, his performances have been excellent, he has just been lacking the goals in the first few games. You can’t criticise his work rate, he caused all kinds of problems. We have had a good chat and he is a great lad to work with”.

With four of the last five goals scored by midfielders, Hessenthaler feels his side have more of a threat going forward than last season, “looking at us as a team, we have goals coming from different areas, whereas last season we were reliant on Jay. This season already we have scored from wide areas, set pieces and central areas”

  • Only 25% of Orient’s league goals last season were scored by midfielders

With Orient sitting 4th on 7 points from their opening four games, Kelly is happy with how his side have started however “it always could have been better, we should have got something out of Cheltenham and could of got something against Newport. Those in the past and we move forward, in our last two we have scored five and conceded one which is a good record. We have to keep moving forward and look to the next game which will be a tough test”.

The Stags arrive into Leyton on the back of their first league defeat last weekend to Plymouth. Mansfield have started well under boss Adam Murray this season with the former player chuffed with his sides start.

  • Their second successive away game before three consecutive away games

Murray who spoke to mansfieldtown.net earlier in the week reflecting on their first league defeat of the season, “there were negatives which have been turned to positives and with a full week on the training pitch, plans for the long term along with Saturday can be put into action”.

  • Previous league results (2-0L Plymouth, 1-1 vs Cheltenham, 3-2 W vs Newport and 1-0 v Yeovil)
  • Recent away games (most recent first) – LWLWLLL

Mansfield looked sluggish in the opening 30 minutes at Plymouth which ultimately cost them the result according to Murray. Speaking post match “we started slow and were sloppy, when you do that against good teams you will get punished. We didn’t have the energy or drive in the opening half an hour, they came out the block and caught us cold. “

  • Last season’s away record – P23  W10  D3  L10  F27  A27

Murray echoed that the league will be very tight this season, “results today showed again how tight it will be, we would have taken the start if we were offered it at the start. The big thing we need to get right this season is we need to be consistent 7’s to be successful in this league”.

Interest has been made in striker Matt Green with Murray confirming that they declined a bid for the striker. Speaking after the Plymouth defeat, “we have had a bid of interest in Matt this week, the bid was not up to our value. We don’t want to lose him, he is a key player for us and a bid would have to be extreme for him to go as he is a valuable player. We don’t have to sell him”.

  • Green has netted 18 goals in 45 goals in his Mansfield career
  • Scored 16 in 46 last season and has scored 2 in 4 games this season

Murray knows that his side have to go into games with the right mindset if they are to achieve success this season. Speaking on mansfieldtown.net about tomorrow’s opponents “they can’t fail this season, the position they are in as a club, they have put a lot of resources into it. They are a big club and have to go up this season. If we are fresh and are on it, we are good enough to beat anyone in this league. We need to go with that mindset”.

Team News

Ollie Palmer will be pushing for a recall after netting off of the bench in last weekend’s victory at Grimsby. Striker Jay Simpson sat out last weekend and could recover from his back injury to be named in the matchday sqaud.

Jack Thomas, Krystian Pearce, Pat Hoban, Scott Shearer and Chris Clements are all doubts for tomorrow’s game at Orient. Former O’s striker Darius Henderson could be handed a start against his former club after impressing at Plymouth in the second half.

Head to Head – Leyton Orient 24  , Draw 14  , Mansfield Town  12

Smash and Grab at Sea

Second half goals from Liam Kelly and Ollie Palmer sealed back to back victories for Leyton Orient. The O’s weathered a first half storm from Grimsby where visiting keeper Alex Cisak pulled off three fine saves to prevent the home side from taking the lead.

Orient took the lead against the run of play when home keeper James McKeown presented Liam Kelly with an easy finish 10 minutes into the second half. Grimsby began to leave spaces at the back in search for an equaliser however another mistake from centre half Josh Gowling presented Ollie Palmer with a one on one which he duly tucked away.

With time epping away second half substitute Dominic Vose’s deflected strike pulled one back in injury time but Orient hung on to move up to fourth.

On the back of their 3-0 win against Tuesday against Stevenage, Orient made one change with Jordan Bowery coming in for the injured Jay Simpson who missed out with a back injury.

Orient 1st half at Grimsby

Grimsby who were on a run of three successive away defeats made two changes from their defeat to Colchester on Tuesday. Returning Craig Disley came in for Tom Bolarinwa who dropped to the bench while Shaun Pearson came in at centre back for Andrew Boyce.

Grimsby vs Orient

Following a slow start from the visitors the home side seized the initiative and were pressing on the front foot. Indecision in the O’s backline saw the ball fall to Omar Bogle who saw his effort smothered by Alex Cisak.

Grimsby continued their search for an opening goal when James Berrett seized on a miss placed pass from Sandro Semedo but the Grimsby winger saw his effort saved. From the resulting corner midfielder Craig Disley glanced his free header wide as Orient continued to look shaky at the back.

As the game began to settle down, the O’s still looked second best to the home side where penalty appeals were waved away after Omar Bogle tumbled under a Sandro Semedo.

Orient were second best all over the pitch and were thankful for Alex Cisak in their goal. Bogle wriggled free inside the box with his goal bound shot seemingly destined for the top corner but Cisak tipped the effort wide.

Orient struggled to create going forward with a mistake nearly presenting them with the opening goal. After Nigel Atangana found Jordan Bowery in the right channel who’s cross was deflected off two Grimsby defenders over the bar.

The Mariners continued to create going forward when left back Danny Andrew produced a wonderful cross from the left but striker Kayden Jackson could only fire wide at the near post. Ex Orient midfielder Luke Summerfield was next to test Alex Cisak but the Australian shot stopper kept the midfielder at bay.

Half time came at the right time for the away side however Grimsby still remained in the ascendancy at the start of the second half. Cisak continued to be in fine form in the Orient goal saving from Jackson at his near post before James Berrett wasted a glorious chance at the back post. Following a good move down the left by the hosts, Ashley Chambers cut in from the left whipping in a delicious ball to the back post where James Berrett glanced his header wide.

Orient 2nd half vs Grimsby

Orient moved midfielder Harry Cornick into more of a central role in the second half with the move almost having the desired effect 9 minutes after the interval. Collecting the ball midway inside the Grimsby half, Cornick released Gavin Massey down the right who saw his teasing cross deflected agonizingly wide of the far post.

DSC_0065Orient took the lead just a minute later and there was more than an element of fortune with the goal. After Jordan Bowery skipped clear down the right, as he reached the by line he crossed to the centre. Home keeper Jordan McKeown looked to have claimed the cross however the ball went loose to the on rushing Liam Kelly who touched home from one yard out.

After scoring against the run of play, the goal seemed to push the away side on more with Bowery nearly scampering clear but a last ditch challenge prevented the O’s striker from getting a shot away. Orient wasted a glorious chance when Dean Cox’s drilled corner found an unmarked Tom Parkes who glanced wide from six yards out.

Bogle still provided a threat for the home side and should have drew level when the ball fell loose in the box but the front man fired wide from inside the six yard box. As the game entered the final 20 minutes, Andy Hessenthaler threw on Ollie Palmer in place of Dean Cox to try and stretch Grimsby’s back line.

With the home side pushing for an equaliser, spaces were left at the back which resulted in Palmer wrapping up the points sending them back to East London. A hopeful ball forward to Palmer was misjudged by Josh Gowling at the back which presented the O’s front man with the chance. The former Grimsby striker broke free, finishing low beyond James McKeown and celebrating with the O’s away fans behind the goal.

The second goal seemed to kill off the home side who saw Ashley Chambers’s effort smothered by Cisak in the Orient goal before the traditional “Orient are making hard work for themselves”. As the game entered added time, substitute Dominic Vose’s deflected shot looped over Cisak, pulling one back for the home side. However the O’s saw out the remaining minutes to seal back to back wins, moving them up to fourth.

Don’t let the score fool you, a win is a win and you will take one any day of the week but Orient had to be very thankful of keeper Alex Cisak. Orient’s no 1 produced a string of fine saves in the first half to keep his side in the game. Orient were second best for all of the first half, losing ball in midfield and looking lost for ideas in attack. The attacking trio of Massey, Cornick and Cox, looked ineffective when attacking however attacking was very limited.

However the fact remained that the score remained 0-0 with Grimsby wondering whether they would rue their miss chances. Indeed they did in the second half where two mistakes were punished by the away side. I don’t think Orient will be presented with two easier goals all season but who cares; you will take them all day long. The first a cross dropped on the goal line to Liam Kelly to tap home then a defender missing the ball gifting the ball to Palmer who slotted home.

The Simpson saga continues with the front man missing with a “back injury” but was at the ground to watch the game. With Gnanduillet gone to Blackpool and McCallum’s absence from match day squads still a mystery to everyone in attendance, what will the next episode bring?

Two wins from two this week with two performances at the opposite end of the spectrum. Tuesday’s performance was very encouraging on the eye with the today’s vastly opposite but a win is a win. But how many times has it happened to Orient in recent seasons, have countless chances in a game then two mistakes cost them the game. Orient were clinical with the two chances that were gifted to them.

Fourth in the table before Mansfield at home next weekend, the question remains will Simpson be available, fit, still at the club or gone? With only Ollie Palmer and Jordan Bowery named strikers in the squad, will we see some movement in attacking areas before the window shuts?

Who knows when it comes to Leyton Orient, all I know is away days are made so much better when you grab an undeserved victory. Onwards and upwards to Mansfield next weekend.

“Three Points Would Cap a Great Week”

Leyton Orient first team coach, Danny Webb insists that three points at Blundell Park tomorrow would cap a fantastic week for his side. The O’s picked up their first win of the season in a 3-0 home victory over Stevenage on Tuesday with Webb setting his sights on maximum points tomorrow afternoon.

Webb who was appointed to first team coach in the summer was very happy about the togetherness the side showed on Tuesday night. Speaking ahead of the trip to Grimsby to leytonorient.com I think Tuesday was the most together we have looked on the pitch. What impressed me most was the last ten minutes when Ollie and Jordan came on and were tracking runners”

  • Orient’s recent away record – DWLLDL (most recent first)
  • The win came in Orient’s last game of last season in a 1-0 victory at Yeovil
  • Orient have failed to score in three of their last six away games
  • Away record last season – P23  W8  D8  L7  F27  A30

Webb joined Orient in 2011 working with the youth teams and has slowly progressed to the first team. “It has been good, very different but I am learning all the time. The lads have been great with me. I am 33, it is a good opportunity for me to keep learning and amy enjoying more when we win”.

Tuesday’s win against Stevenage saw the first appearance of the season for striker Jay Simpson. The former Arsenal striker has been involved in speculation linking him away from Brisbane Road but Webb praised the front four’s performance on Tuesday, “going forward the three behind Jay: Coxy, H and Gav and as a four were unplayable, all round we were excellent, important we take that into Saturday”

Front four vs Stevenage

With eight summer signings at Orient, the team against Stevenage was a mixture of old and new faces with Webb describing them as “a pleasure to work with, their professionalism and work ethic is excellent, we all have the same goal and are going in the right direction”.

As games come thick and fast at the start of the season, Webb is hoping his side back up their result against Stevenage at Grimsby tomorrow, “there is no better feeling that winning two on the trot, taking six points out of six. Wins on Tuesday and Saturday spreads a good vibe. To go to Grimsby, a long trip on a coach and get three points would cap a great week”.

  • Since September 2015, Orient have only won back to back games four times

Keeper Alex Cisak was pleased that his side picked up their first win and first clean sheet of the season on Tuesday. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash in Grimsby to leytonorient.comwe had to wait three games to get that win, the clean sheet is good for confidence with the whole team, we have been working in training as a back four and hopefully it will continue throughout the season”

Nicky Hunt made his first appearance this season at right back on Tuesday and the 32 year old is keen to keep his place in the side. Speaking after the victory to leytonorient.comI am always pleased to play games that is what I am here for, to win football matches and get promoted. It is healthy competition, you are always looking over your shoulder, you have to perform to the best of your ability to be named for the next game”

The win over Stevenage saw Orient net first in a match which is something Hunt thinks is integral to any game, “it was massive, the first goal in any game is massive, especially at home, it gets the fans on your side again and got them cheering”.

Scoring first record past 2 seasons

  • The first goal is massive for Orient, in the past 95 league matches, 80% of the points they have collected have come when they scored the first goal

Grimsby will be looking for some home comfort tomorrow after suffering three consecutive away losses, most recently a 3-2 defeat to Colchester on Tuesday night. Manager Paul Hurst was criticised the first half performance of his side which saw them 3-0 down at the break. Speaking post match to grimsbytown.co.uk “the first two goals we gave them were against a side who is growing in confidence. We started the game fine but it is the goals in particular that kill you. The first two goals were a set play and a throw, we have to improve at it otherwise we will be up against it”.

  • Home form – WLLDW (most recent first)
  • Win came in opening game of the season in 2-0 victory over Morecambe
  • Last three results – 3-2 L (Colchester), 2-1 L (Wycombe), 1-0 L (Derby)

Despite the deficit at the break, Hurst praised his side second half display, “we have to give the players credit in terms of the second half, we could have capitulated but we stuck to our task winning the half 2-0″ . However the Grimsby manager knows that his side have to tighten up at the back explaining that “to come here and have five good chances, score two goals, you can’t expect to get more than that”.

Assistant manager Chris Doig knows his side need to improve defensively but hasn’t hastened the attempt to bring in a new defender. Speaking to grimsbytown.co.uk “we are not worried but we need to be better, we have worked on things in training, we have spoke to them, shown them clips. We are working hard to fix it and eradicate the mistakes but when the lads cross that white line they have to take responsibility”

After gaining promotion in the play off final in May, Doig insists that despite what people may say there is a difference between the two leagues. “People say there is no real difference between the league and the one below. There is, you can’t afford to give lads a head start and unfortunately we are and we’re paying for it”. Doig continues “it is definitely more clinical and that combined with the mistakes we are making has contributed to us not winning games so far”.

  • Last season home record – P23  W13  D6  L4  F44  A17
  • 3rd highest scorers at home last season – only Cheltenham (49) and Wrexham (48) scored more
  • Joint 3rd best defensive record at home – only Braintree (12) and Cheltenham (13) conceded less
  • Only lost three home games in 2016 – a run of 15 games – defeats to Chester and Braintree twice

Despite facing one of the favourites for promotion, Doig insists his side are concentrating on themselves and sorting out their own problems “they are one of the most fancied sides in the league, one of the big spenders and will be expected to be up there, looking for automatic promotion. They have certainly got a squad that is capable of that and are a threat going forward with a lot of pace in the team. They are a dangerous opponent”.

Team News

Craig Disley will be pushing for a start at Blundell Park tomorrow after returning from injury on Tuesday night. Midfielder Sean McAllister is a doubt after suffering an injury at Colchester. Apart from McAllister,Doig describes the team as in good health, “there are bumps and bruises, everyone is back in training but some are at different stages”

Nigel Atangana remains a major doubt after suffering a shin injury against Stevenage while there remains concerns over Nicky Hunt and Dean Cox. Sammy Moore and Armand Gnanduillet will be unavailable after moves to Dover (loan) and Blackpool (permanent) this week.
