Ross Sparkles Under the Goodison Lights

A first half strike from Aaron Lennon and 2 second half penalties from Ross Barkley gave Everton their first home league win since November. Lennon who scored and assisted in the Toffees win at Carlisle on Sunday opened the scoring midway through the first half after good work from Tom Cleverley down the left.

Newcastle struggled to create in attacking areas with Everton nearly their own worst nightmare trying to pass their way out of trouble. The home side signaled their intent in the second half hitting the woodwork three times in 5 minutes through Ross Barkley, Tom Cleverley and a John Jo-Shelvey.

With the home side only leading by 1 goal, the nervousness around Goodison was in abundance until Lennon’s work down the right caused substitute Rolando Aarons to bring him down. Barkley slotted home from the spot then capped a fine performance pouncing on a Jamal Lascelles to win a second penalty with the Newcastle man sent for an early bath. Barkley’s delightful paneka finish from the spot helped move Everton up to 11th after their victory ahead of their trip to the Britannia on Saturday to face Stoke.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez made two changes from the side that overcame Carlisle in the FA Cup on Sunday. Arouna Kone and Steven Pienaar dropped to the bench with Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry coming back into the side. Aaron Lennon continued on the right flank ahead of Gerard Deulofeu while John Stones was ruled out pre match with a hamstring injury.

Everton First Half

Newcastle were without a game on Saturday after losing in the FA Cup 3rd round to Watford. Manager Steve McClean made 3 changes to the side which lost 2-1 to Watford in the Premier League 11 days ago. Paul Dummet and Ayoze Perez came back into the side with Jamal Lascelles and Aleksandar Mitrovic dropping to the bench. Recent signing Andros Townsend made his debut while deadline day signing Seydou Doumbia was named on the bench.

Newcastle 1st half

Everton started the game on the front foot with, as expected the majority of possession; Newcastle were more than happy to sit with 10 men behind the ball hoping to soak up the Everton pressure. Tom Cleverley who netted the winner at St James Park in the corresponding fixture went close to opening the scoring after 5 minutes. After a good move down the left saw Ross Barkley skip past a number of challenges, his ball found Lukaku inside the area with his back to goal. The Belgian striker opted to lay off to Cleverley on the edge of the box but the former Manchester United man saw his curling effort destined for the bottom corner brilliantly saved by Rob Elliot.

Everton were struggling to create going forward with space of a premium in the middle of midfield. Lukaku curled a free kick just wide before Lennon opened the scoring midway through the first half. Following link up play down the left between Bryan Oviedo, Barkley and Cleverley saw the latter found on the left edge of the penalty area. His ball found Lennon who span and his low shot crept beyond Elliot into the far corner to put the Toffees ahead.

Cleverley was the bright spark for the home side in the midfield with his energy and work rate creating much for his side. Barkley saw an optimistic lob go over after a poor clearance from Elliot. Martinez’s men were fully deserved of their lead but the nervous energy surrounding Goodison was not helped by their continued need to pass their way out of trouble at the back. Funes Mori, Oviedo and Barry were all guilt of playing their way into trouble however with Newcastle lacking attacking invention, the lead was fairly comfortable.

Barkley who had struggled to find space in the opening 40 minutes of the game almost created a second for his side. After dazzling feet on the left, his low ball across goal found Lukaku on his heels at the back post. However Coleman retrieved possession on the right, his one two with Lennon saw the Republic of Ireland full back pull back the ball to the unmarked Lennon in the area. But unfortunately for Lennon, his goal bound effort was blocked. McClaren was forced to make a change towards the end of the first half with Chancel Mbemba forced off with injury with Jamal Lascelles replacing the defender.

With Everton leading at the break, McClaren introduced Rolando Aarons at left back in place of Paul Dummet while Romelua Lukaku was forced off with a back injury for the home side; Arouna Kone replaced the Belgian forward. With the half time team talk ringing in their ears, Shelvey saw an effort from distance fly straight in to the arms of Joel Robles. Robles was starting his first premier league game of the season after Tim Howard picked up a knee injury in training.

Newcastle 2nd half Formation

It was clear that Martinez’s wanted the tempo increased from his side in the second half and they responded. The Toffees were pressing higher up the pitch and this pressure presented Lennon with the chance of a second. Lennon broke through the Newcastle midfield but after shifting the ball onto his left foot his shot was saved; Kone picked up the rebound but his effort flew wide of the target.

With Everton on the front foot, they then hit the woodwork 3 times in 5 minutes to increase the nervousness around Goodison. First, a brilliant run from Barkley saw the England International’s curling effort tipped on the bar by Elliot. Next John Jo Shelvey headed on to his own bar after a Tom Cleverley free kick then it was Cleverley who became the third player to clip the woodwork with his second free kick tipped on to the post.

After squandering leads in three of their last 5 Premier League matches, the Merseyside faithful were fearing the worst after their side failed to add to Lennon’s opening goal. Despite introducing Mitrovic in the second half, the Magpies still looked avoid of ideas in the attacking third. Their best chance fell to Aleksander Mitrovic but much like the rest of the season, the Newcastle no 45 struck wide. After Moussa Sissoko did well to create space on the left hand side, his in-swinging cross found Mitrovic who avoided the offside trap but struck his volley wide.

Barkley’s influence on the game was growing ever bigger by the minute but decision making in the final third was costing his side. Barkley was finding acres of space in the middle with Cleverley’s, McCarthy’s and Barry’s pressure on Newcastle helping him to create going forward. As time ticked down towards the 90, the nervous energy continued to grow until a fine bit of play from Lennon won his side a penalty. After Lennon jinked his way inside the box, half time substitute Rolando Aarons went through back of Lennon leaving referee Craig Pawson with no option to point to the spot. Barkley slotted home from the spot to much relief around Goodison.

Barkley was not satisfied with just one goal for the night, after a long ball forward Jamal Lascelles was caught on his heels. Barkley pounced a broke into the area, Lascelles pulled the Everton man back as he was about to shoot. Pawson pointed to the spot and produced the red card to increase the misery on the Geordies. Barkley stepped up and finished with a delightful “paneka penalty” to wrap up victory and move his side up to 11th.

Steve McClaren’s Newcastle still sit 2 points from safety in 18th place and with the January transfer spending at St James Park the most in Europe; they have to start performing soon. In truth though the Magpies looked at no stage likely to score at Goodison, despite the introduction of Andros Townsend, he looked isolated on the wing. With the arrival of Seydou Doumbia on Monday, it looks quite clear to the onlooker that he will be thrust straight into action on Saturday at home to West Brom. A crucial game for the Geordies who will need to replicate their last home performance which saw them beat West Ham 2-1.

It is hard on last night’s evidence to fight the corner of Steve McClaren had to be thankful to his keeper Rob Elliot for keeping the score just to 3. Elliot had a fine game in goal for Newcastle but with creativity null and void in attack for his side, it seems an uphill task for the Geordies to stay in the Premier League.

Ross Barkley, a joy to watch in the flesh, his driving runs forward and his vision on the ball is exceptional. His decision making still needs to improve but the England International thrived under the lights at Goodison. When the game opened up in the second period, Barkley was the difference but the work of Barry and McCarthy really helps Barkley’s freedom in Martinez’s system.

Tom Cleverley, lost at Manchester United but the Englishman seems to have found a home at Goodison. His work for the first goal will go un-noticed by many but his run forward and his ball to Lennon made the opportunity for his side. Playing just off the left side, he provides a balance to his side and adds a bit more protection to the midfield with Barkley left in a free role. Cleverley drifted out of the game towards the end but his contribution on the game was brilliant.

Martinez divides opinion on Merseyside with many acknowledges the fact that they should sit higher in the division. The players available to Martinez of course the Blue side of Merseyside should sit higher, however a semi final loss to Manchester in the League Cup and a 5th round tie with Bournemouth to come later this month, progression in the cup is in sight. The Toffees sit just two points behind their city neighbors and 8 points off of Manchester United in 5th place, a run of form will see the blues rise up the table.

The main positive was a second clean sheet in two games only the second time they have achieved back to back clean sheets this season. Everton have been poor defensively in many games this season but with Cleverley adding better balance on the left hand side, it seems that Martinez has gone more back to basics. The philosophy remains of keeping possession, moving the ball around nicely. Coleman and Ovideo love to get forward but the cover that Lennon and Cleverley provided helped give the Toffees more of a stable base.

Rondon to the Rescue

Salomon Rondon’s injury time equaliser snatched a point for West Brom at home to Swansea last night. Rondon pounced after Swansea fail to clear a late corner to salvage a draw against an improved Swansea side. Francesco Guidolin took charge of only his second game since his appointment and nearly made it three wins on the spin for his side. Glyfi Sigurdsson swept home to give the Swans the lead after 64 minutes. The Swans continued to attack and the impressive Alberto Paloschi nearly grabbed a second but his close range finish clipped the post.

Pulis threw on Victor Anchiebe and the much talked about Saido Berahino in search of the levelling goal but it was Rondon who notched for the Baggies. Swansea remain 3 games unbeaten since Gary Monk departure and on last night’s evidence they appear to be getting back to their best. Pulis felt his side did enough for all 3 points but after missing some guilt edge chances, the Baggies boss waved away boos to see his side move on 29 points ahead of another relegation crunch match at Newcastle on Saturday.

The Baggies, off the back of their 2-2 draw in FA Cup with Peterborough on Saturday, made 5 changes. Sebastien Pocognoli was replaced by Jonas Olsson while Saido Berahino and Rickie Lambert dropped to the bench in place of Salomon Rondon and the returning Darren Fletcher. Ben Foster was welcomed back into the side with Boaz Myhill dropping to the bench with Tony Pulis including recent signing Sandro in midfield.

West Brom 1st half

Swansea who came into the clash off the back off their 2-1 victory at Everton named an unchanged side. Andre Ayew continued in attack with Angel Rangel preferred to Kyle Naughton at right back. Francesco Guidolin did name Alberto Paloschi his new signing from Chievo on the bench alongside Batemis Gomis and Jeffereson Montero.

Swansea 1st half

The Baggies started the brightest and could have taken the lead in the second minute, a good cross from the right from Craig Dawson found the head of Darren Fletcher but a smart tip over Fabianski kept the former Manchester United man out.

Swansea then started to gain a foothold in the game with their typical free flowing passing through midfield. A natural occurrence when watching the side from Wales, Ki and Britton were linking up very well in the midfield. Pulis’s men were struggling to contain the Swans with much of the time being spent in their own half.

Both Swansea full backs Angel Rangel and Neil Taylor were given the freedom to bomb forward and Rangel nearly gave his side the lead. Following a neat turn in the middle, Ki found Rangel on the right but the Spanish full back saw his effort from distance fly wide. Neither side had tested the opposing keeper until a wonderful piece of opportunism from Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelandic midfielder controlled the ball 35 yards from goal, spotting Foster off his line, the Swans midfielder unleashed a dipping left footed effort which Foster just about managed to turn around the post.

Despite the majority of the possession, Foster had only been tested once and his side should have taken the lead before the break. First Dawson headed wide from a Sessengnon free kick with goal at his mercy then Fletcher shot wide after creating space in the area. Guidolin was forced to replace Ki who had to be replacing following a nasty looking injury with recent Alberto Paloschi. The former Chievo man nearly provided an instant impact but his fierce shot from Wayne Routledge through ball was beaten out by Foster.

Swansea end

The second half started much like the first, Fletcher once again headed over a guilt edge chance following great work from James McClean down the left. Andre Ayew then shot wide for the visitors after creating space at the back post. Both sides made changes with Johnny Evans going off through injury for the Baggies while Neil Taylor was replaced by Kyle Naughton at left back.

West Brom End

The Baggies had struggled to create chances for Rondon in the opening 60 minutes so Pulis introduced the much talked about Saido Berahino for Stephane Sessegnon to much displeasure from the home fans. However Swansea struck immediately after to take the lead, after a loose ball popped up in the penalty area Sigurdsson slotted home for his 6th Premier League goal of the season.

The goal was greeted with boos from the home fans who saw Ashley Williams go close to adding a second for the visitors but his header went straight at Ben Foster. West Brom tried to push for an equaliser with Victor Anchiebe having an effort saved after he was introduced for Sandro. Berahino also went close but Fabianski saved well from the striker.

Swansea still looked a danger on the break through Sigurdsson, Ayew and Britton who broke up play very well for the Welsh side. Paloschi added a much needed physical presence in attack and went agonizingly close to adding a debut goal to his impressive performance. Kyle Naughton crossed from the left side with Paloschi getting in front of his marker but his effort cannoned off the base of the post.

With the game entering additional time, Swansea looked to have held out for a third consecutive victory however Rondon thought otherwise. Following a corner, the ball was not cleared by the Swans leaving Rondon to bundle home the equaliser.

Being my first trip for to the Hawthorns, I was impressed with atmosphere in the Smethwick End especially with the large majority of fans preferring to stand rather than sit. West Brom struggled to get going in the game but did have their chances to win the game especially through Darren Fletcher. It is clear than the Baggies faithful are not happy with tactics employed by Pulis in home games and for large periods last night they played without the ball.

Berahino staying, is that a good or a bad thing? Well after saying he never wanted to play for the club again, he is back in the Baggies strip. He added a little spark that was missing after his introduction but as everybody knows he is nowhere near full fit or sharp. I will be interested to see where Alex Pricthard will fit into a Pulis team after his arrival from Tottenham. I thought Sandro has a good game last night in the midfield. I have a feeling that Sessegnon could make way if Pricthard is going to start for the Baggies.

Swansea appear back to more of what we know them for, possession football with an end product. The attacking two of Ayew and Sigurdsson have a very good partnership going while Britton is a very good defensive player for them. In that system he breaks up play and when watching the Welsh side it is clear that an integral part of their side relies on players being comfortable in possession. Paloschi looks a real addition to their side and it was an impressive debut from him, Guidolin has already made an impact at the Liberty and it appears the Swans are set to be on the up.

Speaking to swanseacity.net earlier today Cork stated “we needed the two recent wins because it gave us a real boost, no-one expected us to win at Everton especially as we had never won there in the league but that result really raises the confidence levels”. Only three sides have taken less points in the Premier League since the start of September and Cork understands “when there is a lot of pressure on you, it makes it harder to perform but when you get 2 consecutive victories it eases that pressure significantly”

Defender Federico Fernandez worked under Guidolin in Italy and understands that the 60 year old will add experience at the Liberty Stadium. I think we could see the benefits from the changes he has made”

Guidolin revealed after the win at Everton to swanseacity.netI am very happy, it is a dream to manage in the Premier League and we played very well”. The Italian has managed all over Italy lasted managing Udinese in 2014 and it working alongside Alan Curtis at the Liberty Stadium. Looking ahead to tomorrow’s clash with West Brom, Guidolin stated to swanseacity.netthe table looks better after the 2 wins, we have another difficult match against a good team, it is important to have a balance on the pitch, I have some other ideas but at the moment I can’t change too much”

With the Swans sitting three points behind the Baggies in the table, Cork understands the importance of the game at the Hawthorns tomorrow. “It is a big game, maybe people outside the club won’t think that but we can go above them in the table if we win” Cork added “that would be 3 wins on the bounce and for us that would be massive”

Nolan Rues Horrendous Errors

Mistake, after mistake, after mistake stated Leyton Orient player manager Kevin Nolan as he saw his side crumble to a 3-1 home defeat to Cambridge yesterday. Nolan had seen his side pick up to back to back wins in his first two matches in charge but once Ben Williamson pounced on a poor Frazer Shaw header to slot the U’s ahead, it was always going to be an uphill task.

Williamson doubled the U’s lead 8 minutes into the second half after nipping in after a mistake by Connor Essam. Recent signing Armand Gnanduillet halved the deficit after poking in from a corner but Orient then gifted Cambridge their third goal of the afternoon. Ben Williamson out muscled Connor Essam on the byline, squared for new signing Jimmy Spencer to sweep in on his debut for Cambridge.

Kevin Nolan named an unchanged side for the 3rd consecutive game after back to back wins over Wycombe and Newport. New loan signing Shaun Brisley was named on the bench alongside midfielder Sammy Moore who had recovered from a knee injury and Kevin Nolan.

Orient at Wycombe

Cambridge boss Shaun Derry made 3 changes with Ryan Donaldson, Harrison Dunk and Josh Coulson all coming back in to the side. Mark Roberts, Robbie Simpson and Karlan Ahearne-Grant all dropped to the bench. New signing Jimmy Spencer was named on the bench.

Cambridge at Orient

The game started brightly with a good tempo to the play but much like Tuesday’s victory over Newport, Orient seemed content to sit behind the ball and look to counter attack. Cambridge enjoyed much of the possession and took the lead after a terrible mistake in the Orient defense. After a long ball forward was allowed to bounce, Frazer Shaw tried to head back to Alex Cisak, however his header was terribly short. U’s forward Ben Williamson nipped in to accept the gift, round Cisak and slot home to put his side ahead.

After keeping back to back clean sheets in the last two games, the Orient defense showed all the wrong signs that they were back to where they started when Kevin Nolan was appointed. Despite falling behind, Orient were still looking nervy at the back with a mistake never far away, Sean Clohessy was beaten down the left with Harrison Dunk’s cross headed over his own bar by Frazer Shaw.

With the game getting scrappy, Orient’s decision making had to be questioned at times. Mathieu Baudry did head over a Jobi McAnuff corner but Cambridge keeper Will Norris remained untested in goal. Much of Orient’s play just like the rest of the season came down their right hand side through full back Sean Clohessy. Clohessy crossed several times but brilliant defending from Leon Legge prevented Jay Simpson from adding to his 22 league goals this season.

Neither side made any changes at the break however O’s striker Armand Gnanduillet was given a pep talk from Nolan during the interval. With Gnanduillet ready to be introduced, Cambridge doubled their lead through Williamson for his second of the game. Another gift presented the U’s striker, a ball in the right channel saw Connor Essam pushed of the ball far far too easily. Williamson entered the penalty area and beat Cisak at his near post to extend their lead.

Gnaduillet was introduced after the goal and the former Chesterfield forward only took 3 minutes to halve the deficit. Following a Jobi McAnuff corner, Cambridge failed to clear the ball and Gnanduillet poked beyond Norris to give Orient a hope to recover the game. Then another turning point Nolan introduced Blair Turgott in place of Calaum Jahraldo Martin.

Cambridge brought on their new man Jimmy Spencer in place of Ryan Donaldson and Spencer only took 2 minutes to net his first Cambridge goal. After yet another mistake at the back, a ball played over the top saw Williamson beat Essam for pace. Williamson squared to Spencer who swept beyond Mathieu Baudry on the line to reestablish their 2 goal lead.

Nolan introduced himself in place of Jack Payne in a hope of saving the game. However despite large amount of possession, Orient lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. Armand Gnanduillet had shot well saved but that was Orient’s only real effort until the final minutes. Turgott had a shot blocked before Nolan himself dragged a shot wide as the former West Ham suffered his first defeat in management.

Well where do you start with that one? Individual errors once more giving everybody a sense of de ja vu. The first goal conceded was a terribly hit back pass but was so preventable, the golden rule when defending is DON’T LET THE BALL BOUNCE. What happens, Shaw let’s that happen, put under pressure then under hits his back pass. However, Shaw is young and has potential and has been one of our best defenders this season. Despite the mistake, he didn’t seem to let it play on his mind and continued to play his own game.

However if two words are needed to describe that match then CONNOR ESSAM, says it all. Everybody who was present at Brisbane Road yesterday would know exactly where I am coming from. Every since his injury against Accrington he has been poor, even in the back to back clean sheets, Essam has still looked shaky at the back. Today must have been the worst spell for an Orient center half in a game. The second goal was horrendous viewing, “out muscled” seems too generous to Essam who let in Williamson in to score his second. However Cisak has a lot to answer for with the golden rule for Goalkeeping is not to get beaten on your near post.

The third Cambridge goal, Essam gets beaten for pace, even having a couple of yards on Williamson was not enough to prevent him nipping in. He had the easy decision to square to Spencer to slot home. Sean Clohessy is a man who started the season well, however since I would say November time, he has been poor. It is no surprise that Nolan is looking to bring another right back in as Clohessy seems to have no competition in that position. Scunthorpe away, the first goal was a mistake, Exeter at home two goals at the back post behind Clohessy. Defensively Orient have been and still are poor but does the blame lie with a manager who inherited them…..

However, one decision Nolan got majorly wrong yesterday was failing to bring off Essam after getting the score back to 2-1. Essam was a disaster waiting to strike again in the second half, with a new center half brought in on the bench that is the change that should have been made. Shaun Brisley should have introduced after 60 minutes but instead another Essam mistake, 3 minutes after Turgott’s introduction Spencer slotted home number 3. A manager with more experience might have done that, keep the opposition out means you only have to score 1 goal. Failing to sure up the defence resulting Orient losing a third and killer goal.

But it has been 2 wins out of three games, and 6 points from a possible 9. However let’s not forget that Orient won their first five games then suffered a heavy defeat at Exeter and took time to recover from the defeat. Maybe the defeat will hit home to Nolan that it will not be plain sailing at Orient. There is a lot of work to do and people may look back to this game as a turning point. Me and @les_bristow spoke earlier in the week stating that a defeat might actually put everybody’s expectations into perspective. I mean defending like yesterday at Portsmouth next weekend and the score will be 5 or more. Orient were lucky to beat Pompey on boxing day and Portsmouth have been the best side to play Orient this season in the league. It is a big week for Nolan and his side, if he wasn’t already I think there will be some shopping down before the window shuts on Monday.

“I Love a Challenge and Being Tested”

Leyton Orient player manager Kevin Nolan is loving every minute of his time at Brisbane Road. Nolan who was appointed last week saw his side pick up back to back wins for the first time since August with victory over Newport on Tuesday. Orient look to cement their place in the play offs with Nolan speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today “I love being tested and love a challenge,I love everything that is going on at the moment, as long as the results and performances are positive then I’m happy. The most pleasing thing is the lads are buying in to what we are trying to do as coaching staff”.

  • League Record – P28 W11 D10 L7  F44 A38
  • Home Record- P14 W7 D4 L3 F24 A16
  • Last home games (most recent result first) – WLWDDDWWL
  • Form in last 8 – W3  D3  L2

Nolan saw his side pick up their second win of the week on Tuesday at home to Newport, thanks to a late second half penalty from Jay Simpson. Speaking after the game to leytonorient.comthe most pleasing aspect for me is 2 clean sheets on the spin, what we worked on when I came in here was if you were going to win a game you have to score more than 1 goal but as you’ve seen tonight, we scored a goal and kept a clean sheet”

  • There has been at least 1 goal in every Orient league game

Goalkeeper Alex Cisak believes that Nolan deserves a lot of credit for getting his side keeping back to back clean sheets,”from the whole 11, we are defending a lot better, talking a lot more. We have done a lot of work in training which has helped massively”. Orient only kept 1 clean sheet in the league between September and January but the Australian shot stopper is enjoying his time in East London. Speaking to leytonorient.com after the Newport victory “another win, another clean sheet, we couldn’t have asked for a better start under him”

  • First back to back clean sheets since August
  • Kept 6 clean sheets in the league,  4 of them at home
  • Kept 2 clean sheets in last 5 home games in all competitions
  • Both Teams have scored in 20 of their 28 games and 9 of their 14 home games
  • Only Portsmouth (3), Oxford (4) and Northampton (5) have conceded less goals at home in the second half (6)

Despite the victory moving Orient into the play off places, Cisak is keen to work on a game by game basis, “we just need to keep the run going as long as possible and take it 1 game at a time. It’s Cambridge Saturday, we need another really good defensive display”. Moving into the business end of the season, the momentum appears to be with the East London side and Cisak knows that his side need to keep looking up rather than down, “we are taking every game as it comes, there are 18 games left, 15 wins to get in the top 3, that is our goal really”

  • Have scored in their last 12 league games
  • Scored in 14 of their 16 home games this season
  • Only failed to score in 2 of their 28 league games this season
  • Scored 24 of their 44 goals in the second half with 15 of their 24 home goals coming in the second period
  • Only Notts County (15) have scored more
  • There has only been 1 goal in the first half of their last 4 matches

Orient’s 3rd game of the week sees Cambridge visit Brisbane Road and Orient’s player manager is keen for his side to start sharing the goals around, “generally we have been good and we have hurt teams, when we have a player like Jay Simpson if you get 1 chance he will put it in but we can’t just rely on Jay. We want to spread the goals around the team so that we are dangerous from every aspect of the game”

  • Simpson has netted 50% of Orient league goals (22)
  • Has netted in 5 of his last 6 games and 11 goals in his last 11 games
  • Orient second top scorer has only 4 goals
  • Simpson has netted 11 of Orient’s last 17 goals

Orient midfielder Jobi McAnuff insists that consistency is key until the end of the season for his side. The 34 year old understands that recovery is key at this stage to ensure that you are fully fit for every game,”it is about recovering between games and getting the load right”. Speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today, the ex Reading man knows that even though his side moved into the play off places on Tueday, “we want to put a bit of distance and cement our place in the play offs. This is where it really matter,we have put ourselves in a a reasonable position, this is the time where you can make the big move to where you want to be, we need to keep our heads down and get results”

  • Orient have opened the scoring in the first 15 minutes of 7 matches and 12 times in the opening 30 minutes of matches
  • Taken only 16 of their 43 points against sides in the top half of the table
  • Drew 7 of their 13 games against top half sides

Nolan will go head to head with good friend Shaun Derry on the touchline tomorrow and knows that his side will be in for another tough test,”Shaun is a great fella, we have a lot of mutual friends, he wished me luck when I got the job and hopefully we can catch up after the game”. Nolan continued “we have had some good battles on the pitch over the years and we are in for another one on Saturday and really looking forward to it”

  • Record when scoring first – W10 D4 L3 – at home W6 D1 L1
  • Record when conceding first – W1 D6 L4 – at home W1 D3 L2
  • Have taken 13 of a possible 15 when they have been leading at half time at home

Shaun Derry’s U’s arrive in E10 rescuing a point at home to Hartlepool last weekend thanks to a last gasp Ben Williamson goal. Derry’s men are without a win in 2016 but with his side sitting just 4 points outside the playoffs, the former Palace man knows that it is a key time for his side. Speaking to cambridge-united.co.uk ahead of tomorrow’s clash “whoever is going to break in to the top 7 knows they have to go on a run of results and performances and suggest they are going to be unbeaten for 5-6 games, we are 2 games unbeaten and looking forward to going to Leyton Orient”

  • League Record – P28  W10  D8  L10  F40  A40
  • Away Record – P14  W5  D5  L4  F20  A16
  • Last Away Results (most recent first) – DLWWWLW
  • Form in last 8 – W3 D3 L2
  • Taken only 2 points from possible 12

Derry was left frustrated with his sides draw against Hartlepool last week but knows despite the position in the table, nothing ever should be taken for granted, “there was an element of disappointment in the stadium directly after the game. I think when you see a team that comes in 19th position there is an expectancy you should go out and beat this team, we all know that doesn’t happen”

  • Kept 6 clean sheets- 4 away from home
  • Kept 1 in their last 5 games and 2 in their last 13 games in all competitions
  • Failed to score in 8 games, 7 of them away (joint worse in the league)
  • Failed to score in 2 of their last 3 games

Once again Derry felt that the game changed when his substitutions entered the field, “we held vast amount of possession and controlled the game, but what we didn’t have was clear cut opportunities till the last 20 minutes when the subs came on. We have no divine right to win game we are trying our very best day in and day out and pleased with the level we are producing”

  • Scored in 13 of their last 16 games
  • 3 of their 5 away wins have been by a 1 goal margin
  • All 4 away defeats have been by 1 goal
  • 50% of their away games have seen 3 or more goals

With his side moving into the business end of the season, Derry wants his fans to not get too carried away with what they have seen on a match day, “the long term plan is to get this football club into league 1, we want to do it sooner rather than later of course but it might not happen that way, I have only just arrived and am pleased with out progress”

  • Both teams have scored in 17 of their 28 games but only 6 of their 14 away games
  • Conceded 26 of their 40 goals in the second half
  • 18 of them have been in the final 30 minutes of matches
  • Cambridge would  sit 4th if games lasted 60 minutes, dropped 5 points
  • Opened the scoring in the first 15 minutes of 6 games

Derry revealed that he was in attendance at Orient  on Tuesday and acknowledges the tough test his side await tomorrow. Speaking to cambridge-united.co.uk yesterday, “they got their 2nd win on the bounce with Kevin Nolan coming in as manager. It will be a really difficult afternoon, they are a good team and probably have one of the strongest squads in the division. They find themselves in the top 7 and we have a difficult opponent on our hands but as always we want to take the game to them”

  • Record when scoring first – W7 D2 L3 – away from home – W4 D1
  • Unbeaten in last 12 away games scoring first, winning 8 of them
  • Record when conceding first – W3 D3 L7 – away from home – W1 D1 L4

Although Derry and Nolan are friends within football, the Cambridge boss insists there will be no friendly words during the game, “I am looking forward to pitting my wits against him and hopefully we can share a drink afterwards but for that 95 minutes he becomes the firmest of enemies”. Derry added “he is 2 games in and finding his feet but am sure that his back room staff will give him a lot of support”

  • Only taken 12 of their 38 points against top half teams – losing 6 games

Team News

Orient can include recent loan signing Shaun Brisley after the center half joined on loan till the end of the season from Peterborough this week, Nolan stated to leytonorient.comhe adds quality that we are looking for and puts pressure on the center halves we have now. We want to maintain healthy competition to ensure that standards are kept so high”

Cole Kpekawa will be absent with a foot injury while Alan Dunne has shaken off a knock ahead of the game tomorrow. Nolan will still be unable to call upon long term absentees in Paul McCallum, Dean Cox and Lloyd James.

Connor Newton is a doubt for the U’s who revealed today that Barry Corr will be out until the summer with a knee injury. Ryan Donaldson could be handed a start after impressing of the bench against Hartlepool.

  • Barry Corr top scorer with 12 goals

Head to Head – Leyton Orient 12, Draw 13, Cambridge 17

Last Meeting – 12/09/15 – Cambridge 1-1 Leyton Orient

  • 3 of the last 4 meetings have been draws – all finishing 1-1
  • Orient have only won 1 of the last 5 games at Brisbane Road
  • 6 of the last 8 meeting has seen both teams score

Prediction – Leyton Orient 2-0 Cambridge

“A Good Start to an Important Week”

Leyton Orient player manager Kevin Nolan was full of praise for his side after their 2-0 victory at Wycombe on Saturday. Nolan who was appointed last Thursday after Ian Hendon was sacked, spoke to leytonorient.com after their win, It feels great I must admit, our first away win, a clean sheet and 2 well taken goals. The lads responded to everything I asked if them over the last 48 hours”.

  • Sit 8th on 40 points, 2 points outside the playoffs
  • League Record – P27 W10 D10 L7  F43  A38
  • Home Record – P13 W6 D4 L3  F23 A16
  • Last Home games (most recent first) – LWDDDW
  • Form in Last 8 – W2 D4 L2  F12  A12

Nolan now faces 2 home games this week with his side hosting Newport County tomorrow night before Cambridge United on Saturday and the former West Ham man knows that they will not be easy games. Orient’s victory at Wycombe came with their first clean sheet in 12 league matches, something which Nolan feels that performances need to be built on. Jay Simpson netted his 21st goal of the season and the Orient player manager acknowledges his importance “we want to get up to League 1, if we want to do that we can’t let our best players go, Jay is one of them. I said to the lads, keep a clean sheet then he gets 1 chance, he scores and we win the game 1 nil”.

  • Kept 5 clean sheets in the league, 3 of them at home
  • Clean sheet at Wycombe was their first in the league since 24th October
  • Without a clean sheet in a home league match in 10 games – last one 29th August
  • Have just 1 in their last 12 home matches
  • Been at least 1 goal in every Leyton Orient league match this season

Despite his appointment, Nolan understands the focus and aim of president Francesco Bechetti “we will try and get this club striving forward and get into those play off positions to continue to try and get into League 1. That is the ultimate aim this year, we haven’t shyed away from that, the President and his staff told me that’s what we want”. With his first win under his belt the 33 year old understands that there will be downs along his journey but “is really looking forward to it but as long as what we are doing on the training pitch is effective on a Saturday”

  • Only failed to score in 2 of their 27 league matches
  • Scored in their last 11 league games, last failed to score 31st October vs Accrington
  • Only failed to score in 1 of their 15 home games this season
  • Taken 13 points from a possible 18 in home games against sides in the bottom half of the table
  • Record against teams in bottom half – W7 D3 L4

With reports unsure of Nolan’s coaching qualifications, he put that question to bed as he has his B license with him hoping to complete his A license by the end of the summer, but “that is not important to me, I’m in the job and will do it to the best of my ability, hopefully everybody in the club will buy into what I am trying to bring and we can be successful”.

  • 50% of their home wins have been by a 2 goal margin
  • Both teams have scored in 20 of Orient’s 27 League matches

Top scorer Jay Simpson replicated Nolan’s iconic “chicken celebration” after his goal on Saturday and highlighted that his manager was quick to thank the players for their efforts. Speaking to the East London Advertiser Kevin thanked us for our efforts because of what went on and nobody really knew what was happening”. Simpson added “before the match he said go our there, work hard, speak to each other and enjoy it”.

  • Simpson top scorer in top four English Leagues with 21 league goals
  • Scored 49% of Orient’s league goals
  • Scored 12 goals in his last 10 league games

With Newport in town tomorrow night, Nolan is looking for more of the same from his sides second half performance. Orient’s player manager thought his side were not taking their time over their decisions and rushing when they had possession. However Nolan stated that at half time he “asked for a bit more quality on the ball, we sat them down and just asked them to show their quality, they are all good players and can all handle the ball, they did and I am really pleased”

  • Orient alongside Northampton have scored 15 goals in the opening 30 minutes of matches,no team has scored more
  • 14 of their 23 home goals scored have been in the second half with 13 in the final 30 minutes
  • No team has scored more in that period
  • Opened the scoring 7 times in the opening 15 minutes of matches- only Wimbledon have equalled that
  • Record scoring first W9 D4 L3 – home – W5 D1 L1
  • Conceded first- W1 D6 L4- home -W1 D3 L2

Newport arrive in E10 having fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Dagenham on Saturday. The Exiles fell behind to 2 goals in the first 6 minutes on Saturday but scored two late goals to rescue a draw against one of their relegation rivals. It has been a season of change in South Wales with Warren Feeney recently becoming the third manager of the season.

  • Sit 20th on 24 points
  • League Record P26 W5 D9 L12 F30  A41
  • Away Record  P13 W4 D3 L6  F14  A16
  • Last away games (most recent first)- WLLWDDDWW
  • Form in last 8 – W2 D3 L3  F13  A13

Following John Sheridan’s departure to Oldham in early January, Feeney stepped up from his assistant manager role to take charge of the Welsh club. Feeney spoke to newport-county.co.uk after their draw before the game we said, we all want to win matches but the position we are in you don’t lose against these teams, we are disappointed with the goals we conceded and it was the worst possible start for us”

  • Have failed to score in 10 league matches
  • Only Yeovil (11) have failed to score in more games
  • 6 of them away from home
  • Scored in their last 4 games
  • Only failed to score in 2 of their last 17 games in all competitions

Despite falling behind, Feeney was happy with how his side responded and felt that there was going to be only 1 winner, “you want 3 points every game but it was a fantastic comeback, that is the thing that pleased me was our never say die attitude, I want my players to train hard, play hard and get in to habits of not losing”.

  • Both Teams have scored in 12 of their 16 games, (only Wycombe 11, have been involved in less

Poor concentration was the key to the early goals conceded said Feeney who feels that despite the attacking intent of teams, defending must be top of the agenda. “I am a big believer that defenders defend first and foremost. They should defend that goal end of story, we have to defend set pieces, we didn’t which is disappointing but we have to put the goals behind us and take the positives to Tuesday”.

  • Scored 15 goals in last 30 minutes of games and 8 in last 15 minutes
  • But have lost 5 points in the last 15 minutes of games

The Newport boss most important target is clean sheets, speaking after the game”I want to clean sheets, I am being greedy but clean sheets win football games, we can’t keep giving teams 2 goal starts like we did”. However the former Northern Irish international knows that with his side sitting just 4 points above the relegation zone sometimes you  “don’t care how we win games as long as we get over the line, sometimes you have to win football matches ugly and grinding out results”

  • Kept 6 clean sheets, 4 of them away from home
  • Only 1 clean sheet in last 7 games
  • 2 in their last 4 away games
  • 18 of their 41 goals conceded have between minutes 31-60
  • Only York and Dagenham (19) have conceded more in that period
  • Conceded 2 or more goals in 6 of their last 7 matches

County added 3 strikers to their ranks before Saturday’s draw with Dagenham with Deane Smalley joining from Plymouth, John Christophe-Ayina joining and Connor Wilkinson signing from Bolton. Both Ayina and Wilkinson netted on their debuts with Wilkinson adding that it was extra special with his dad in the crowd. Wilkinson spoke to newport-county.co.uk post match “to be fair we are happy getting the draw, coming from 2 nil down, the boys showed their character, we knew at half time were going to try and get something from the game”

  • Record scoring first – W5 D3 L2 – away W4 D2 L1  (defeat 4-3 at Notts County)
  • Recording conceding first – D4 L10  away L5
  • Only 3 teams have taken less points from losing positions than County this season
  • Only won 1 of their last 33 games conceding first, losing 22 of their last 29
  • They have never won an away match after conceding first since their promotion back to football league in 2013, taking just 2 points from 72 available

The 20 year felt that his side could have won the game in the end “we had enough chances to win the game, 3 points would have been nice but coming from 2 nil down to get a point is good”. Wilkinson has already been loaned out 5 times by his parent club Bolton and realises that is may be his time to shine in Wales, “Feeney wants me to play, he knows what I am capable of, I have not done too well at my previous clubs, I have had arguments and fallen out with the managers. I have been stupid but Feeney just wants me to play and express myself”.

Team News

Orient should have a full fit squad to chose from with Sammy Moore returning from his injury while new signing Nigel Atangana looks set to retain his place after being substituted on Saturday after sustaining cramp. Nolan will still be unable to call upon long term absentee’s Paul McCallum and Dean Cox who continue their rehab from knee ligament injuries.

County could hand a start to Jean Christophe-Ayina after netting from the bench on Saturday while Medy Elito could return at Brisbane Road. Connor Dymond could return to the squad after missing out the draw against Dagenham. Feeney resigned defender Darren Jones after his release from Forest Green last week.

Head to Head -Leyton Orient 17, Draw 13, Newport County 17

Last Meeting -22/08/15  Newport County 2-3 Leyton Orient

  • Orient have won 2 of the last 3 meetings between the sides
  • This season was the first time the sides met in 27 years

Prediction – Leyton Orient 3-1 Newport County

Nolan’s Reign Starts With a Victory

Leyton Orient’s first win first win in four games helped Kevin Nolan to victory in his first game as player manager. Nolan’s side picked up a 2-0 victory at Wycombe Wanderers yesterday thanks to second half strikes from top scorer Jay Simpson and Hull City loanee Calaum Jalhrado-Martin.  The former West Ham captain was appointed on Thursday after Ian Hendon was dismissed last weekend and saw his side move to within 2 points off the play offs places.

Wycombe who lost their third round replay at Aston Villa on Tuesday made 2 changes from that side. Goalkeeper Matt Ingram moved to QPR on Friday so Joe Lynch debutised in goal while Matt Bloomfield missed out through injury with Sido Jombati coming in.

Wycombe home to Orient

New player manager Kevin Nolan made 3 changes to the side that lost 3-1 to Exeter City last weekend. Bradley Pritchard and Cole Kpekawa dropped to the bench with Fraser Shaw and new signing Nigel Atangana starting. JeanYves-M’Voto left the club in midweek so the O’s welcomed back club captain Mathieu Baudry after serving his 3 match suspension after his red card on Boxing day. Nolan named himself on the bench.

Orient at Wycombe

Both sides struggled to get the ball down in the early exchanges with much of the play being in the air. Chances were few and far between as both sides looked to gain a foothold in the match. Garry Thompson and Sam Wood fired over from distance for the hosts while Ollie Palmer saw his header blocked from a Jobi McAnuff cross.

Orient were without a clean sheet since mid October in the league and despite a change of management the defense still looked susceptible to mistakes. Nigel Atangana was making his debut after signing from Portsmouth in midweek and was breaking up Wycombe’s attacking play, providing a well needed shield to the Orient back line.

Calaum Jahraldo-Martin was also looking lively for the visitors, causing problems and tracking back very well. The first half was really passing both teams by but Ollie Palmer did glance another McAnuff freekick wide of the target. Atangana proved his worth when his last ditch tackle on Luke O’Nien prevented the Wycombe man from taking a shot at goal.

Referee Darren Bond was letting a lot of decisions go for both sides and Ollie Palmer saw his penalty appeal turned down after being pushed over in the Wycombe box. Orient’s best move of the half came just before the interval, after a free flowing move Fraser Shaw approached Wycombe’s 18 yard box on the left. His ball around the side of Sido Jombati found Jahraldo-Martin who had moved inside from his right flank. Jahraldo Martin’s shot appeared to be tipped over by Joe Lynch however appeals for a corner were waved away.

Orient started the second half as they finished the first on the attack and Jay Simpson saw his goal bound shot blocked after collecting Ollie’s Palmer’s knock down. Despite’s Orient’s pressure and intent on going forward, Simpson could only fire wide off the mark as neither keeper were tested. However the away side did take the lead after 64 minutes and it had a route one feel to it. A long ball from Alex Cisak found the head of skipper Mathieu Baudry, his header fell to the unmarked Jay Simpson, who took one touch and fired home beyond Lynch to put Orient ahead. Simpson’s 21st goal of a prolific campaign celebrating much like his player manager had in his career with the “chicken dance”

DSC_0496

The away side deserved their lead and continued to flow forward but Jobi McAnuff could only fire wide after breaching the Wycombe back line. Nigel Atangana was forced off with what was later confirmed as cramp after an impressive debut and looks a much needed addition to the Orient squad, Bradley Pricthard replaced him.

Wycombe lacked a spark in attacking areas and despite introducing Paris Cowan-Hall who joined on loan before the game his cross could only be flicked wide by second half substitute Gozie Ugwu. Ollie Palmer was leading the line really well for the away side, helping to relieve pressure on his defense. Palmer got a standing ovation from the 805 travelling supporters as he was replaced by new signing Armand Gnanduillet who joined the club from Chestefield on Friday.

Wycombe last chance came when Aaron Pierre’s header from a corner was headed away by Bradley Pricthard as the Orient back line held firm. Nolan’s side wrapped up victory just before the 90 minutes, a ball out of defence found Simpson who laid the ball back to Jahraldo-Martin who in turn played the ball in the left channel for Simpson to run onto. Jahraldo-Martin continued his run forward and Simpson’s through ball was inch perfect into his path to slot home for his first goal in an Orient shirt and rubber stamp the victory.

How football changes in a week? A Win? Yes. 2 Goals scored? Yes and A CLEAN SHEET. After Ian Hendon’s dismissal last weekend, the rumour mill was sent into over drive with who was going to be the next Orient boss. President Francesco Bechetti opted for player manager Kevin Nolan who was appointed on Thursday and becomes the 6th manager under the Italian’s ownership. A poison chalice some may call it but Nolan started as he meant to go on.

Only Orient’s second clean sheet in their last 22 league matches and a much needed one at that. But let’s be honest there were only two shots on target in the match both were goals for Orient. Wycombe rarely troubled Orient’s backline but they still looked nervy shaky in the game. Better sides will trouble Orient more than Wycombe did and top of Nolan’s shopping list has to be center halves. Surely you would think?

However the signing of Nigel Atangana is a shrewd one and on yesterday’s evidence a very good one. Orient have been missing a defensive midfielder who breaks up play and shields the back 4, Atangana looks the perfect fit for that job. The 26 year old was replaced due to cramp and it is not surprising with yesterday’s game his first start since November in the league. With more games under his belt and his fitness increasing, he will be an integral part of Orient till the end of the season.

Fraser Shaw had another really good game in an Orient shirt which makes it even more baffling that Ian Hendon decided to drop the former Dulwich Hamlet defender on numerous occasions. The left back who joined in the summer, has very good potential and of course he will make bad decisions as he is still learning his trade. But with a run of games he will continue to grow as a player.

Anybody who was at the game yesterday will understand that top of Nolan’s to do list is get Jahraldo-Martin on loan till the end of the season. The winger on loan from Hull City was one of the shining light at Adams Park, the ability to beat a player and the desire to get back and defend for his team. He deserved his goal which was probably the first time Orient scored a goal on the counter attack. The pace is much needed in the side and his link up play with Palmer and Simpson looks already developing.

Jay Simpson continues to score goals and yesterday showed that once again his deadly inside the box. One chances is always he needed to notch his 21st league goal of the season but I thought Ollie Palmer played really well. His holdup play in the second half was brilliant relieving pressure when Orient needed him. The signing of Gnanduillet has certainly added competition in attack which Palmer seems to understand. I know people say all work and no goals but I feel his work is needed in attack to help provide Simpson with chances in games.

Well, “baby steps” as Kevin Nolan stated in his press conference on Friday, it is clear that Nolan has been brought into to try and gain promotion. It appears that the budget is there for Nolan with the 2 new signings and with more coming in before the transfer window ends. 2 more games this week with Newport and Cambridge at home, surely two wins will be vital to push Orient in amongst the play off places. The mood appears to have changed at Brisbane Road but let’s remember it has only been one game under Nolan. They key will be who is brought in before the window and if Jay Simpson stays. Well you can say there is a never dull week in the life of an Orient fan…

Hapless Defending Sees Hendon Ko’d

Leyton Orient manager Ian Hendon received his marching orders as his side crumbled at home to Exeter yesterday. The former West Ham coach has been under pressure at Brisbane Road with poor performances from his side. The first half defensive collapse where the Grecians walked through again and again through Orient’s back line was enough for President Francesco Bechetti who met with Hendon post match to reveal his news. Assistant manager Andy Hessenthaler has apparently been asked to take over till the end of the season but with Bechetti as President anything is possible.

Ian Hendon made only 1 change from his side that drew with Stevenage 2-2 two weeks ago. Jean Yves-M’Voto came in at center half with Fraser Shaw dropping to the bench. Sammy Moore was included on the bench after more than a month on the sidelines.

Orient home to Exeter

Exeter manager Paul Tisdale made 5 changes to his side that drew 1-1 away at Morecambe. Danny Butterfield, David Noble, Christian Riberio, Lee Holmes and Alex Nicholls were all included in the starting 11. Jamie McAllister, Matt Oakley, Jordan Tilson, Joel Grant and Tom McCready all dropped out.

Exeter at Orient

Orient who had only one win in their last 7 games pre match got off to the best possible start. Ian Hendon spoke to leytonorient.com on Friday “about games are not won in their first 5 minutes” well he can’t have told his side that. Following early pressure, McAnuff’s header found Jay Simpson, he fed the ball back to Pritchard who passed first time to McAnuff who had run into the left side of the penalty area. McAnuff cross found Ollie Palmer who chested home to give his side the lead after barely 40 seconds.

Orient looked right up for the game and were pressing high trying to force mistakes from City. The home side were finding space down the right hand side early on but Blair Turgott screwed his shot wide when full back Sean Clohessy was free outside him. Bobby Olejnik looked rather unsure in the Exeter goal with his kicking wayward.

City have their third round replay at Anfield on Wednesday and could have crumbled after the early goal. But with Orient’s inability to defend, Exeter always had a chance. The home side began to stand off Exeter in possession with the away side camped inside Orient’s half. They did level after the quarter hour, Tom Nichols played the ball back to David Noble on the right hand side. The midfielder cut back on to his left foot and his cross was turned in at the back post by former Orient loanee, Jayden Stockley. Stockley had crept in unmarked behind Sean Clohessy and had the easy job of heading home.

Exeter were the only side in the game after the equaliser, the ease of the leveling goal saw the away side grow with confidence. Danny Butterfield fired over from a corner after penalty appeals on Jayden Stockley were waved away. Orient had 2 weeks off from their last game with defending high on the agenda, it appeared that nothing was done in that period. Tom Nichols was next to go through the non existent defence after Noble’s through ball found Nichols who evaded the offside trap but Alex Ciask saved well.

City were becoming more and more dangerous  looking like they would score on every attack. They took the lead after 23 minutes, after yet more woeful defending from the O’s. After Stockley’s ball forward was failed to be cleared, Lee Holmes crossed to Alex Nicholls at the back post. Orient managed to block his shot but Alex Nichols crept behind Sean Clohessy at the back post to head home.

The same old mistakes once more but with still 60 minutes to play Exeter would score more. Alex Nicholls was played in once more from David Noble as Orient tried to play the offside trap but it failed yet again. Nicholls had Stockley and Tom Nichols in support but his shot was saved at his near post by Ciask. It was wave after wave of Exeter attack and you knew there was a third goal coming. City’s 3rd goal in 18 minutes came with more poor defending, words to not to it justice. Watch the goals and you will see why. Butterfield’s cross from the right was volleyed home by an unmarked Stockley for his third goal in 5 days.

The home side were no where near their opponents with the away side dominating in every department. Blair Turgott had a faint appeal turned down before Ollie Palmer’s tame header was easily saved by Olejnik. City really should have had a fourth and it would have been the best of the lot. Christian Ribeiro who had been camped inside the Orient half, cut in from the right hand side but his wonderful left foot shot cannoned off the bar.

Cole Kpekawa fired over from distance before top scorer Jay Simpson could only head a Sean Clohessy cross wide of the mark. “Cut out the silly mistakes was the verdict” from Sean Clohessy on Friday, but he was capable once more. After his poor back pass was picked up by Nichols but his shot was blocked.

Boos rang out as the half time whistle blew alongside calls off “HENDON OUT” from nearly every corner of Brisbane Road. The Orient manager brought on Fraser Shaw in place of Jean Yves-M’Voto and Calaum Jahraldo-Martin for Blair Turgott.

Orient Second half vs Exeter

However the early signs were not good when Stockley’s header was pushed around the post by Ciask. Orient were beginning to grab a foot hold in the game but were still struggling to create going forward. Sean Clohessy driven cross from the right was gathered at the second attempt by Oljenik.

The away side were sitting deeper and deeper with Orient camped inside their half for the majority of the second half. Jay Simpson screwed a shot wide before Jobi McAnuff drilled a shot just wide from 20 yards. Substitute Jahraldo Martin looked lively after his arrival and created Orient’s first of 2 penalties. He picked the ball up on the right hand side, his through ball went inside full back Craig Woodman to Clohessy. Woodman pulled back Clohessy, Simpson stepped up from the spot but after sending the keeper the wrong way, Orient top scorer saw his effort cannon off the post.

Orient then had another chance to reduce the deficit with another penalty. Jahraldo Martin jinked past a defender before playing Simpson through in the right hand side of the penalty area, Woodman brought Simpson down for the penalty. Simpson stepped up for the second time but Olejnik saved comfortably to his right to cap a fine day for Exeter in East London.

Where do you start with that game then? Well Ian Hendon has gone, dismissed after the match with Andy Hessenthaler apparently asked to take over to the end of the season. At half time, I think most fans knew that Hendon was going at the end of the match, after a 2 week break for a team to defend that bad is beyond me. No where near Exeter for the whole of the first half and it is no understatement to say it could have been at least 6.

We must take responsibility” have been the words uttered in recent matches well there has to be some after that performance. 2 wins in the last 11 league games and those were not exact easy were they? 1 clean sheet in the last 21 league matches is utterly terrible and the fact that Orient have conceded 2 or more goals in 4 of their last 5 games. The statistics can keeping coming but the end of the line that the defense has been an issue for a while.

Bechetti has struck again with that now becoming 5 managers at Orient in 479 days or 15 months. Did he get this appointment wrong? I mean what did every Orient fan want after the Italian Job last season? An English manager, we got that but it was obvious from the out set that if the diamond did not work, we would struggle in games. The rumour mill has been in overdrive about how much money players are on? Why we can’t sign anybody? But the main statement is we all know actually where the problems lie with the club, they start at the top and work their way down.

What happens next? I don’t think anyone can predict what Bechetti’s next movements will be. Hendon was right that you cannot justify how many mistakes are made in matches but when you drop Fraser Shaw when he isn’t the problem, you make a rod for your own back. To come out and say Connor Essam is rusty but to continually play him, doesn’t seem to make any sense to me. But what do I know, I only write blogs and bake bread for a living.

Wycombe up next where they could be coming off the back of a result against Villa in their third round replay next week. But hang on there is 6 days till that game so that is a long time in the life of an Orient supporter especially with Bechetti as owner. Maybe we will see if the players just didn’t want to play for Hendon or are they just that bad defensively. The most frustrated thing and what I stated to @orientoutlookpodcast, if you were going to sack him why give him another 2 weeks, surely that just is putting off the envitable. It would have given a new manager or a new regime to have 2 weeks on the training pitch to try and sort out some of the mistakes.

One thing you can say it is never dull being an Orient fan is it? I know you must be an Orient fan when you book up Carlisle away on a Tuesday night, well it might be a little better by then,  I mean we can hope.

“We Need to Kick On”

Leyton Orient defender Sean Clohessy insists it’s now or never for his side as they sit 9th in League 2 ahead of the visit of Exeter tomorrow. The O’s are just 2 points outside the play offs places but with a tough run of fixtures to come Clohessy knows that “it is now or never if we put our marker down”

  • League Record- P24 W9 D10 L6  F40  A35
  • Home Record – P12 W6 D4 L2  F22  A13
  • Form in last 8 – W2 D5 L1 F13  A12

With no fixture last weekend, after their game against Newport County was rearranged, it gave Orient the perfect opportunity to get back on the training pitch. Ian Hendon’s men rescued a point away at Stevenage in their last league outing when Jay Simpson became the first player since 1978 to hit 20 goals in a season.

  • Simpson has netted 50% of Orient’s league goals this season
  • Simpson has scored in 7 of the last 8 matches, netting 9 in total
  • In fact, Simpson has netted 9 of Orient’s last 13 league goals

Clohessy spoke to leytonorient.com earlier today “the training has been lively this week and we all have worked hard so hopefully we can take it into tomorrow”. Orient’s defending has been a cause of concern throughout the season with manager Ian Hendon bemoaning his sides inability to defend. Speaking after the draw at Stevenage to leytonorient.com it is poor defending, we work on it all week, we ask the players to go out and do a job, sadly they have not done it again”

  • Orient have only kept 4 clean sheets, 3 of them have been at home
  • Kept only 1 in their last 20 league matches (1-0 away at Morecambe)
  • Kept only 1 in their last 14 in all competitions (0-0 vs Scunthorpe)
  • Both Teams have scored in 19 of their 25 league matches, including 8 of their 12 home matches

The 2-2 result at Stevenage was Orient’s 10th draw this season something which players, fans and manager know needs to change. Fans called for Ian Hendon’s head after the final whistle at Stevenage but the Orient manager stated “I am as frustrated as them, you put a team out on the pitch, if they make errors and mistakes there is nothing I can do about that”.

  • Only Carlisle and Cambridge (39) have conceded more goals in the top half than Orient
  • 20 of the 35 goals conceded have been in the last 15 minutes of halves

Orient host Exeter City tomorrow, the team which ended their unbeaten start to the season in early September. City beat Orient 4-0 at St James Park, a game which left Clohessy baffled, “we completely bossed the game and lost 4-0, they had 5 shots on targets and 2 of them where penalties, I have never been involved in a game like that”

  • Orient have only failed to score in 2 league  games all season, 1 of them was away to Exeter
  • Scored in their last 4 games in all competitions and their last 9 league matches

With Exeter having the glamour tie away at Liverpool next Wednesday night in their FA Cup replay, Ian Hendon is hoping Paul Tisdale’s men have their eye on that prize. Speaking to the East London Advertiser, Hendon stated “you would like to think they will have  eye on facing Liverpool but knowing Paul as well as I do, I know he will have them prepare properly”. Hendon added “they have a tough run of fixtures but are riding a crest of a wave after the draw with Liverpool”.

  • Orient have picked up 24 of their 37 points against teams in the bottom half of the table

January sees Orient play 3 of their next 4 league fixtures at Brisbane Road, something which Ian Hendon hopes his side can build on. “We’re in a position now where we’re at home, the pressure is on, I’m aware of that. We have drawn too many game this year but hopefully we turned the corner at Brisbane Road after the win over Portsmouth on Boxing Day”. After the half way mark in the season, Hendon understands that “we know that we need to be putting a run together. You can’t win the game in the first 5 minutes, it is all about the 90 but we want to win the match”.

  • 14 of their home goals scored have been in the second half
  • 13 of them have been in the last 30 minutes, only Portsmouth have equaled that
  • Only Portsmouth (24) and Notts County (26) have scored more goals at home than Orient
  • The come from behind win against Portsmouth was only Orient’s 2nd win in 25 league games at home after conceding the first goal and 1st win in 14 both home and away

Clohessy has been a constant in the Orient defence since his arrival in the summer and knows the key to his side getting back on the winning trail is “cutting out the silly mistake. Everybody has made them, we have to take responsibility now”. Clohessy added “Saturday is massive now, every game from now on is. We haven’t put 2 wins together, we win 1 then draw or lose 1 but we now need to kick on and start climbing towards the automatics or at least the play offs”

  • Orient have not won back to back games since August
  • Orient have only lost 1 of their last 19 home league games after opening the scoring (3-1 loss to Bristol City 2015)
  • Record scoring first this season – W8 D4 L2 – at home- W5 D1
  • Orient have drew their last 4 games when scoring first in a game
  • Record when conceding first – W1 D6 L2 – at home – W1 D3 L2

Exeter arrive in E10 after a 1-1 draw away at Morecambe on Tuesday night with on loan striker Jayden Stockley netting the equaliser. The Grecians have had the meeting with Liverpool clearly on their mind with the Devon club failing to win a game since they found out their third round FA Cup opponents.

  • City sit 15th, 8 points off the play offs
  • League Record – P25 W8  D7  L10  F32  A38
  • Away Record – P12 W4  D2  L6  F13  A20

Manager Paul Tisdale spoke to exetercityfc.co.uk on the draw at Morecambe “it was a very fair performance, we made a lot of changes with the games coming thick and fast but I thought we played particularly well. We went behind in a bitterly disappointed way but I’m pleased with the way the team played”. Tisdale added “We finished the second half strongly. We’ve arrested the run of defeats which was important today”

  • Form in last 8 – W2 D2 L4  F9  A13
  • Last 7 away matches (most recent first) – DLWWLLD
  • Kept 5 clean sheets this season but only 1 away from home
  • Have 1 clean sheet in their last 8 games in all competitions
  • Only have 1 clean sheet in their last 18 away league matches

City’s trip to Leyton will be the second of three away trips in a week something which Tisdale understands as he rotates his squad, “I have to be shrewd with who I select. I have a deep squad with a lot getting back to full fitness. I explained to them, it will be a squad game for the next couple of weeks” Tisdale did add Jayden Stockley to his squad after he joined on loan from Bournemouth, “he is a forward player who brings something different to the squad, he has a different skill set to what we have”

  • Failed to score in 7 games, 4 of them away from home
  • Scored in their last 3 games
  • 6 of their 8 wins have been by a 1 goal margin
  • In 7 of their 12 away games, both teams have scored

With the income generated from the fixture against Liverpool, Tisdale understands that times have changed at St James Park. Speaking to exetercityfc.co.uk earlier today “we are back on the front foot now and are moving forward, the club has managed the financial decline well over the last 3 to 4 years”. Top scorer Tom Nichols and David Wheeler are attracting interest from clubs in higher divisions but Tisdale explains “we don’t have to take offers, we can take the right one if it comes if it doesn’t we are happy to keep the players”

  • 14 of their 20 goals conceded away have been in the second half, including 6 in the last 15 of matches

Exeter have only taken 1 point from the last 15 available with Tisdale highlighting that “we have put in some good performances of late but need to put them together with results. I cannot grumble with players at all in the last 6 to 7 weeks other than the fact they haven’t picked up the points”

  • Record scoring first – W8 D4 – away from home – W4 D1
  • 90% of their points come when they score first
  • City have only lost 1 of their last 31 league games when they have scored first , winning 21 (defeat at Accrington – 03/01/15)
  • They are unbeaten in their last 17 away league matches scoring first, taking 41 of a possible 51 points available

The Grecians manager acknowledge the threat his side will face at Brisbane Road tomorrow, “they are in the mix, they are a team that are perfectly capable of being promoted. They’re in that bracket, they play on a good football pitch and have the advantage that 1 or 2 players are a higher level”. Tisdale added “we’ll have to keep our enthusiasm up and keep our energy levels high. I trust the players to be in the right frame of mind for the tomorrow”

  • Record conceding first – D2 L10 – away from home – D1 L6
  • Only taken 1 point from last 33 when conceded first goal
  • Only York (1) have taken less points when conceding first goal
  • City have beaten both Plymouth and Portsmouth away 2-1 this season

Leyton Orient will still be without Mathieu Baudry who will serve the last game of his suspension after his red card on Boxing day. John Marquis was recalled by his parent club Millwall while Paul McCallum and Dean Cox remain sidelined with knee injuries. On loan Hull winger Calaum Jahraldo-Martin will be pushing for a start making his debut at Stevenage.

Clohessy recognises that despite Exeter league position they will still be a threat, “they have dropped off of late but have been a really good team this season and will come good again”. He added “Every game is going to be tough and no team is easy to play against. You have to look to be positive”

Exeter will still be without the injured trio of Christy Pym, Ryan Harley and David Wheeler. Jamie McAllister, Tom McCready and Will Hoskins all came through the game at Morecambe unscathed while Christain Riberio was rested and all are available tomorrow.

Burke Sparkles as Forest Progress

A excellent first half display from Nottingham Forest winger Oliver Burke helped his side progress to the 4th round of the FA Cup. The 18 year old was a real hand-full for Queens Park Rangers and set up the only goal of the game after 24 minutes. An exquisite touch on the right wing set up the chance as he crossed for Jamie Ward to bundle home at the far post.

Rangers struggled to create going forward with Gabriele Angella the only man to go close for the visitors but his header was tipped over by Dorus De Vries in the Forest goal. R’s manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink posed a frustrated figure in the dugout as he still searches for his first win as manager of the West London club.

Forest manager Dougie Freeman made 7 changes to the side that drew 1-1 away at Charlton last weekend. Only Dorus De Vries, Jack Hobbs, Michael Mancienne and Ben Osborn kept their places in the starting 11. Chris Cohen was handed his first start in 15 months after making his comeback last weekend, Jamie Ward played just behind Dexter Blackstock in attack. While recent loan signing Gary Gardner partnered Robert Tesche in midfield with Oliver Burke on the right.

Forest team vs QPR

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink made 8 changes to the side that lost 2-1 to Hull on New Years Day. The only men to retain their place in the starting 11 were: Nedum Onuoha, Grant Hall and Gabriele Angella. Clint Hill slotted in at left back while recalled midfielder Ben Gladwin was handed a start. Jay Emmanuel Thomas started up top with Forest old man Jamie Mackie starting on the right.

QPR 4-1-41

In the opening period, neither side were able to grab a foothold on proceedings. Forest adjusted better, trying to pass the ball around nicely however miss placed passes were a constant theme throughout. Forest manager Dougie Freeman has used winger Oliver Burke sparing this season but after a goal against Cardiff at Christmas, Burke has pushed his way back into the side.

Freeman was encouraging the youngster to push himself wide, creating an option for his side in possession. Burke was the man to watch as he ran at Clint Hill at pace every time he received the ball. It was clear to see that QPR veteran left back had no answer to Burke’s speed and trickery on the ball.

The opening goal came on 24 minutes and who created it… you guessed it that man Burke. Following a QPR corner, Blackstock hit a ball to the right touchline, Burke’s exquisite touch put the ball in front of him. Running at the QPR goal, Burke looked up and put the ball on a plate for Jamie Ward to bundle home at the far post.

Burke’s energy on the right wing was causing QPR problems with Hill avoid of any idea how to stop the 18 year old. Hasselbaink was forced to change the shape of his side as Forest were dictating play in central midfield. The change didn’t seem to help his side going forward as they failed to force De Vries into a save. Michael Toszer did strike a  free kick well wide but the Forest defense remained untested.

QPR 4-2-3-1

Neither side made any changes at the break but it was clear from Hasselbaink’s body language that a change was imminent. Tjaronn Chery replaced Ben Gladwin 8 minutes after the break with the former Swindon man failing to show why he was recalled from his recent loan spell.

Burke was still the man to create for the home side in attacking areas but after he drifted inside to receive the ball, the youngster’s exuberance  saw his shot fly wide. Chery’s introduction behind Emmanuel-Thoma put the away side on the front foot as the Dutchman linked with QPR’s front man. A neat passage of play from the visitors saw Chery and Emmanuel Thomas combine but Michael Doughty could only send his shot off target.

Forest were sitting back, trying to absorb the QPR pressure and looking to hit Rangers on the break with the pace of Burke and Jamie Ward. Hasselbaink introduced Michael Petrasso in place of Jamie Mackie who still continues his comeback after a 3 month lay off with a hamstring injury. Freeman brought on Henri Lansbury for Gary Gardner who joined on Friday from Villa and looks far from match fit but put in a good shift for his side.

QPR did go close with 24 minutes remaining when Gabriele Angella’s header was tipped over by Forest keeper Dorus De Vries. Rangers were playing some nice, neat football but were rarely penetrating Forest’s back-line. Massimo Luongo and Chery combined well down the right but the cross into the box evaded the Hoop shirts and the ball was cleared.

James Perch replaced Clint Hill at left back as Rangers continued to search for the equaliser. The home crowd were getting more anxious with Forest sitting deeper and deeper. Bojan Kovic came off the bench for the hosts after joining on loan from Villarreal on Friday after Henri Lansbury fell awkwardly on his ankle.

With a long stoppage in play due to Lansbury’s injury, Chery was next to try his luck from distance but it was an easy save for De Vries. 8 minutes were added on at the end and Forest were able to hold out for victory and book their place in round 4.

That’s now 9 unbeaten for Freeman’s Forest who looked to be upwardly mobile right now. The return of Chris Cohen is a massive boost for the club especially with the extent of Lansbury’s injury currently unknown. In truth Freeman would have been happy with his side, they were rarely tested defensively but when they were, they dealt with QPR well.

Dexter Blackstock was the only disappointment for the home side as he looked disinterested throughout and failed to hold the ball up for his side Freeman has spoke about the need to bring in a new attacking option and on Blackstock’s performance today, it is easy to see his thinking.

However the performance of man of the match Oliver Burke was the standout yesterday. Always a threat when in possession and a willing runner off the ball. QPR had no answer to the 18 year old in the first half and the assist for Jamie Ward’s goal was excellent. Freeman spoke post match to nffc.co.uk about managing Burke right and keeping his feet on the ground. But performance levels like yesterday, Forest fans certainly have something to be excited about.

Hasselbaink still searches for his first win as Rangers boss but his side were very disappointing in the first half. No cutting edge in the final third and that only improved when Tjaronn Chery was introduced off the bench. The team lacks goals in attacking areas something which the return of Charlie Austin can help. But Ranger have two touch away trips to Blackburn and Rotherham this week, first half performances like this, you will find it hard to see Rangers picking up any points.

Forest face Birmingham at the City Ground on Tuesday night before hosting Bolton next Saturday. With the midlands club now 8 unbeaten at home, Freeman will be looking for his side to make the City Ground a fortress until the end of the season. Forest sit only 10 points off the playoffs, a late surge in the second half of the season, you never know what can happen.
