“We Must Start Again”

After an eighth defeat in 11 games against Notts County on Tuesday, Fabio Liverani is quickly running out of games to save Leyton Orient from what seems an inevitable relegation. The O’s lost their ninth home game of the season to a Balint Bajner first half strike and travel to 7th placed Chesterfield on Saturday looking to start on the road to League 1 safety. The Spireites beat the O’s on the opening day of the season 2-1 with the home fans unaware of the turmoil that would surround their club in the coming months.

Chesterfield come off the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Preston on Tuesday but only sit outside the play off places on goal difference to Sheffield United but have played two more games than the Blades. Chesterfield, who are looking for back to back promotions after getting promoted from League Two as champions last season suffered a blow on deadline day losing Eoin Doyle to Cardiff. Reports suggest that Cardiff paid around a £1 million for the 26 year old forward who was in his most prolific spell of his career. Doyle has 21 league goals to his name, exactly 50% of Chesterfield’s total League 1 goals. A major blow for the Spireites who’s next top scorer is Sam Clucas on 5 goals.

Leyton Orient will happier to play away from home as 17 of their 26 league points have come away from Brisbane Road where they have suffered inconsistencies from match day 1. Worryingly for the East London side is their form in their last 10 league matches picking up just 7 points from a possible 30 which has seen them prop up the division and 6 points adrift from Coventry in 20th. Orient don’t have a great record against the top 7, winning only 1 of the 8 games played, 3-1 away at Oldham. Record: P8 Won 1, Drew 4, Lost 3. Orient’s last triumphed away 3-0 at Yeovil just after Christmas with this being their only win in 9 on the road in all competitions, losing 7 of them which does not bode well.

The first goal will be crucial on Saturday as it is in every match but even more when looking at records when scored and conceded first goal in a game.

Chestefield have won 10 of their 11 games when scored first – 31 of their 42 points come when they have scored first goal.

Orient have won only 1 of 15 games when conceded first – Won 1, Drew 2, Lost 13. The win came in August away at Oldham.

O’s boss,Liverani, stated that his side “must start again” after defeat on Tuesday but having lost 6 of the 9 games he has been in charge, he does not fill O’s fans with confidence especially with his team selection and tactics in recent weeks. The decision to start without Dean Cox or Ryan Hedges and bringing on Shaun Batt for Chris Dagnall which was received by boos for home fans. Dagnall who is top scorer for the O’s with 7 league goals has netted 4 of the last 10 that his side have scored but compare that to the departed Eoin Doyle who netted 7 in his first 8 matches, Dagnall’s strike rate will not be enough to keep Orient up.

Chesterfield have picked up 25 of their 42 points at home with 7 wins at the B2Net stadium and like to score the majority of their goals in the second half (24/42) which could be a problem for Orient. The O’s have struggled in the second half of matches conceding 27 of their 44 in the second half which could be pivotal to the result of the upcoming clash. Chesterfield have only lost 1 of their 7 games played against the bottom 6, winning 3 and drawing 3 and will be looking for Cadan Lavery and Mani Dieseruvwe to fill the goal void left by Doye after recently signing from Sheffield Wednesday.

Prediction: Chesterfield will be looking to bounce back from defeat to Preston and jump into the play off places while Orient will be hoping for an upturn in fortune so a score draw in the offering: Chestefield 1-1 Orient

“We Want this to be Our Derby”

Roberto Martinez wants his side to have all of the limelight after the Merseyside Derby with him announcing that “We Want this to be Our Derby”. Saturday’s tea time derby will be Martinez’s fourth but the former Wigan manager has failed to achieve a win so far. The Everton boss understands that they are not in good form but will be looking forward to the game. Everton have only won 1 of their last 8 which was last week’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace but being a derby anything can happen “the city is divided with the two colours”.

Brendan Rogers will be taking his side to Goodison with 5 wins in their last 9 after sealing their progression to the fifth round of the F.A. cup last night 2-1 over Bolton. Rogers’s men showed character after falling behind to Eidur Gudjohnsen penalty, Raheem Stirling and Phillipe Coutinho both netted in the final 4 minutes to set the Reds up for a trip to Palace in the cup. Liverpool sit 7th on 38 points, 12 points more than their city rivals who lie 12th just 7 points away from the relegation places.

Liverpool started the season slow with 6 defeats in their opening 12 league matches but since their defeat away at Old Trafford in December, the Reds have been unbeaten over 90 minutes. With Daniel Sturridge finally returning from injury, he will looking to add to his sides thirteen match unbeaten record. Rogers understands that he needs a result in the derby as his side face 3 of the top 6 in their next Premier League matches (Spurs, Man City and Southampton).

Everton have been poor this season with Martinez taking criticism from his philosophy at times through his approach to play out from the back. The Toffees have only won 6 of their 23 premier league games and have lost 9 in the league compared to only losing 8 in the whole of last season. Defensively Everton have had problems conceding 34 already in this campaign while only letting in 39 last season.

James McCarthy could be set for a return and could play alongside recent loan signing from Tottenham in Aaron Lennon whilst Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar are set to miss out. Rogers has not let much out on whether players will miss out but Lucas Levia, Dejan Lovern and Mario Balotelli all sat out last night. It looks set to be a front 3 for the reds but personnel will be defendant on whether Sturridge can start.

Recent games suggest that it will be a tough evening for Everton who have won just 1 of the last 10 meetings between the two sides back in 2010. The last two games at Goodison have seen score draws but Saturday’s contest could be edged by the red half of Merseyside by the odd goal.

Preview: Who will it be White Point Lane For?

Arsene Wenger’s Gunners travel to their North London neighbors Tottenham Hostspur for the Saturday lunchtime kick off. Wenger’s men are on the back of 5 consecutive wins including a 2-0 win at Manchester City in their last away Premier League match. Arsenal emphatically saw off Aston Villa 5-0 last Sunday to set up their trip to White Hart Lane whilst Spurs were triumphant  at the Hawthans 3-0. Spurs have won 3 of their last four Premier League matches with their last defeat coming at the hands of Crystal Palace in Alan Pardew’s debut game at Selhurst.

Arsenal had been criticized in the first half of the season about their vulnerability at the back after defeats at Stoke, Swansea and Southampton. Wenger set his stall out after 2 terrible goals at St Marys and his side have only conceded 2 in 5 games with four clean sheets to boot. Arsenal’s defence will need to wear of 21 year old Harry Kane who netted his 20th goal of the season at West Brom last week. As a product from the Spurs youth system and born in Walthamstone, he will be looking to make an impression on the NLD. Christian Erickson will be also be a pivotal player for Spurs with his impressive performances throughout the season and match winning contributions, he could be the match winner on Saturday.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham have won 2, drew 2 and lost 2 against the top 6 but both teams will be looking to get one over on their bitter rivals. Pochettino’s men have a tough run of fixtures after hosting Arsenal but will be hoping to take some form into a key month for the North London Club. An away trip to Anfield follows before West Ham at home sandwiched in between the last 32 leg with Fiorentina home and away before facing Chelsea in the final of the League Cup. The former Southampton manager will be hoping all of his players will put in performances through this key time to help Erickson and Kane.

Arsenal will be looking for a win so that they can push on with Leicester and Palace to follow in the league this month alongside Middesborough in the F.A. cup and Monaco in the Champions League. Danny Welbeck looks set to return for the Gunners but a big miss is Alexis Sanchez who misses out with a hamstring injury. Theo Walcott and Oliver Giroud look set to start with Hector Bellerin to continue at right back after impressing in recent performances. Arsenal did however did win last week which hushed some rumours that they can’t play without Sanchez but he has been involved in 19 of their 44 league goals this season.

Tottenham have won 3 of the last 9 Premier league meetings between the two sides with their last victory coming in 2013 where they won 2-1 with goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon. Arsenal came out on top in last years fixture 1-0 with a Tomas Rosicky strike settling the game.  With a stalemate in the first fixture of the season, 1-1 at the Emirates, it will be a tight game between the two sides with no love lost.

Where has my Team gone?

Leyton Orient dropped further into relegation danger as Scunthorpe became the 8th team to leave Brisbane Road with all three points. Liam O’Neil put the Iron ahead as his curling shot beat O’s keeper, Gary Woods, before Gary McShefferey’s cross was flapped into his own net by Woods. Tom Hopper put Scunthorpe 3 nil in front as he converted Paddy Madden’s cross, Darius Henderson pulled back with a penalty after Jordan Clarke had hauled down the front man but Hopper grabbed his second 10 minutes from the end to pull the Iron 5 points clear of the drop.

Orient who hadn’t won in 2015 made four changes with Neil Eardley, Shane Lowry, Ryan Hedges and David Mooney dropping to the bench with Elliot Omosuzi, Mathieu Baudry, Bradley Pritchard and Gianvito Plasmati coming into the starting 11. Scunthorpe made only one change from their 1-1 draw with MK Dons in midweek with Gary McSheffrey coming in for Josh Murphy.

Orient who needed a fast start with confidence low after recent games could have taken a 3rd minute lead when Plasmati and Dagnall linked up nicely to set the Scot up but his shot squirmed under Luke Daniels and onto the post. The Iron appeared to set their stall out early with a 4-1-4-1 formation looking to outnumbered the O’s in the middle of the park and it worked. Vincelot and Lundstram could not cope with the extra man in midfield losing the battle convincingly. It was the home side that the better opening 10 minutes with Nathan Clarke having a header easily saved whilst Dagnall fired a shot straight at Daniels. But just as every Orient fan knew it was inevitable that Scunny would take the lead and they did after 13 minutes. A corner wasn’t cleared from the Orient right with the ball falling to left back Marcus Williams who’s volley deflected off Bradley Pricthard to Liam O’Neil who curled over Woods and in.

The ninth time Orient had conceded first at home with Orient losing 8 of these games, in fact Orient have fell behind 15 times this season and managed only 5 points from 45. It was a long back for Orient, Cox had a shot fizz past the post but Orient lacked battle, grit and determination. Scunthorpe were by far the better side winning ever battle on the pitch. They duly doubled their lead when McSheffrey played a 1-2 with Bishop, the ex Birmingham winger crossed into the center where Gary Woods flapped at the ball, palming into his own net. Scunthorpe were brimming with confidence and could see the Orient heads drop after the second goal.

Luke Daniels nearly had a moment of madness when Dagnall was played through the recent signing from West Brom came out of his box and got just about got enough on the ball to prevent Dagnall getting a shot away. The loose ball fell to Bradley Pricthard but the ex Charlton man took too long over the shot seeing it deflected for a corner. The O’s struggled all areas with miss passes aplenty and mistakes from every player.

Plasmati was replaced by Darius Henderson at half time with the Italian doing nothing to try and improve the relationship with certain groups of fans. But a carbon copy of the last three home matches and last weeks defeat to Colchester, Orient conceded in the first minutes of the second half. The home side lost the ball in midfield with Isiah Osbourne picking out Madden in the right channel after Sawyer had been caught up field. Madden made his way into the box, crossing to the back post where an unmarked Tom Hopper slid in to add to the Iron’s advantage. Scunthorpe could have added a fourth when Hopper flicked O’Neil’s corner into Woods’s arms with the O’s still looking shaky at set pieces.

Orient were beginning to hit the ball to Henderson with frontman looking to lay off to Dagnall, Cox and Pritchard. Henderson had a volley comfortably saved from outside the area but Scunthorpe looked confident in maintaining the lead and looked dangerous on the break through Hopper, McSheffrey and Madden. Orient were giving a very slim lifeline when Jordan Clarke hauled down Henderson in the box with the Orient forward picking himself up to smash home the penalty.

Ryan Hedges was introduced in place of Bradley Pricthard with main question baffling some fans to why didn’t the on loan Swansea winger start the game after appearing to not do much wrong at Colchester last week. Hedges remains one of only a couple of players in the squad who have the ability to take on a man when in possession. After the goal Orient pushed for a second with not much success, Lundstram departed for Mooney with O’s reverting to a 4-1-3-2 formation. But all Scunthorpe needed to do was press Orient once more to wrap the game up and they did through Hopper. O’Neil played Hopper in who wasn’t picked up by either center half and slotted home past the out rushing Woods.

The fourth goal saw a mass exodus of Orient fans with rest looking on wondering what has happened in the months since 26th May. Far from the team, spirit which last season was built on, the unity of the team appears no where to be seen with a team full of individuals rather than a just a team. Cox had a volley saved by Daniels after Henderson’s knock on but Scunthorpe won’t have many easier away trips all year.

Post match Liverani slammed his players with stating that a lot of things are going to change with ‘no midweek days off, double training sessions’ but the one important point is: is there enough time to get out of this mess? On the performance yesterday Orient looked doomed, no battle, togetherness or unity. The worst home record out of the top four English divisions picking up just 9 points from 52, problems remain all over the pitch. Orient don’t have a strong enough midfield at the moment so it still baffles me why not change to a 3 at some point. At Colchester and yesterday Orient lost the middle of midfield for large parts of the game but until players want to play for the badge and the fans; Orient will remain in this mess.

Season is Now a Battle

“The game showed that our ambitions need to be to fight until May and avoid relegation. Last season is the past and is forgotten, this season is a battle” were the words of Orient boss Fabio Liverani after his sides 2-0 defeat in the A12 derby with Colchester last weekend.

The O’s sit 22nd, 3 points from safety at the bottom of League 1 and host fellow strugglers Scunthorpe United to Brisbane Road on Saturday. The Iron lie 17th with 30 points from 24 games but unlike all the teams around them they have three games in hand due to progression in Cup competitions. Another week in E10 saw another departure of Mauro Milanese as sporting director with rumours rife that Liverani and himself had a disagreement about the potential loan move of Mathieu Baudry to Peterborough. Milanese appeared to agree to the deal but Liverani wasn’t on the same page which could have resulted in Milanese leaving.

Scunthorpe arrive in E10 in relative good form with only 2 defeats in their last 14 both away defeats to Bristol City and Chesterfield. The Iron have improved since the start of November picking up 18 of their 30 points and have similar home and away records picking up 14 at home whilst 16 away. Their away form has been good after losing 4 of their first 5 matches while being unbeaten in the next 7: winning 4 and drawing 3. Scunthorpe will be looking to exploit Orient poor home record which sees the East London club with the joint worst home record in the top 4 leagues in England with just 9 points from 12 matches.

The O’s are well and truly in a relegation scrap with home truths set out from Liverani after last week’s defeat to Colchester. With games running, realistically with Swindon, Sheffield United and MK Dons as the last three games, Orient will want their safety confirmed before these. If 50 points is enough for safety, the O’s need to pick up 24 points from 17 matches which could be a tall ask for a team that only has 2 wins in 9 matches against Crawley and Yeovil. Over the last 5 seasons  the average points to survive is 48 with the highest points to stay up in 2009/2010 with Hartlepool on 50 points while lowest would have been 44 in 2011/2012.

Liverani needs to address problem areas which have been present throughout the season: defending from set pieces, concentration and creativity. Concentration at key points in matches has been a consistent problem throughout with 18 out of 39 goals conceded in either first 10, last 10 or 10 minutes around half time with 25 of those goals conceded in the second half. Orient have struggled with set pieces all season not helped by a unsettled back 4 but in a game of small margins defending of set pieces can result in winning games.

The O’s back line will need to be aware of Iron front man Paddy Madden who was rumored to be joining the O’s last January but chose Scunny ahead of the E10 club. Madden has hit 10 of the Iron’s 33 goals this term and with a shaky defence he could net at Brisbane Road. Orient will look to continue with new signings Neil Eardley and Ryan Hedges but Orient need results quickly if they are to climb out of their current situation.

The O’s beat the Iron 2-1 away in September with Scott Cuthbert and Jobi McAnuff grabbing the goals for Orient. But Orient have only won 2 out of their last 15 meetings with Scunthorpe losing their last home games against the Iron.

Prediction: Orient to concede first to a Paddy Madden strike but will battle back to snatch a 2-1 victory with Plasmati grabbing the winner.

Cod Army Take all Three Points

Gareth Evans strike 30 seconds after half time moves Fleetwood up to ninth while Orient still languish in 20th. After back to back wins over Christmas, Orient looked to start 2015 as they ended it but straight from the restart to the second half, Evans was played through and calmly slotted home to give the Cod Army all three points.

Fabio Liverani made two changes to the side that beat Yeovil 3-0 last time out welcoming back Andrea Dossena and David Mooney for Gary Sawyer and Kevin Lisbie whilst new loan signing John Lundstram was on the bench. Fleetwood remained unchanged from their 2-2 draw last week at home to Swindon.

With recent victories over Crawley and Yeovil, Orient looked for a confident display to move them further away from the relegation zone but that was clearly not the case as the game started. Orient were sluggish and lethargic in the opening stages standing off the Fleetwood when they were in possession. Only two changes were made to the team from Yeovil but Orient seemed a million miles away from the football they played in Cornwall 12 days ago. The home side were losing nearly every second ball in the middle of the park with the distance between midfield and attack becoming a worry. Gareth Evans had the first opportunity for the away side blazing over from outside the area after faint handball appeals from the Cod Army.

The away side continued to be the dominant side having a lot of joy down their right with Andrea Dossena continually having positional issues. After a goalmouth scramble with Orient struggling to clear the ball, Dobbie tried to chip Woods but the Orient keeper saved easily. With the crowd becoming restless with the lack of battle from their side, Fleetwood saw their opportunity to strike and went agonizingly close to opening the scoring. Evans made a break down the left, crossed to Dobbie at the back post who evaded Dossena but saw his volley clip the bar after striking into the ground. Orient tried to up the tempo and maintain possession with Dagnall forcing Maxwell into a smart save after good link up from Mooney and Vincelot.

Josh Wright continued in midfield after signing till the end of the season in midweek and saw his half volley rise over the bar from a cleared Omosuzi cross.  Stephen Dobbie went close for Fleetwood but his near post shot went just wide for the away side. Orient still struggled going forward with the creative spark missing which has been seen in glimpses in recent weeks. The Cod Army saw where the weaknesses were and Jamie Proctor should have put them ahead 3 minutes from the break after getting behind Dossena but saw his shot smothered by Woods. Orient top scorer was looking to add to his 3 goals in two games and nearly did just that when his run down the left saw his shot clip the far post after Maxwell get an important touch.

Josh Wright was replaced by Lundstram at half time much to the fans surprise with the former Millwall midfielder one of the better performers in the first half. Before most fans were in their seats, Fleetwood took the lead. A long ball forward from right back McLaughlin was flicked on by Proctor to the onrushing Evans who received the ball in acres of space in the Orient defence and clamly slotted home. The third time in three home matches where Orient have conceded a goal in the first ten minutes of either half. Orient appeared to change system from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 with Lundstram and Pricthard holding with Cox (right), Vincelot (left) and Mooney just behind Dagnall.

Orient were still struggling winning the second ball against their counterparts but Mooney should have done better after Dagnall found his strike partner on the edge of the box. The home side played a number of balls looking for Dagnall and Lisbie throughout the match but Roberts and Jordan cleaned up nearly every ball. Dean Cox was replaced by Kevin Lisbie which didn’t go down to well with the home crowd but was later announced that he was struggling with a thigh injury.

It was hard to pick up the Orient formation at times in the second half but Vincelot, Lundstram, Dagnall and Lisbie were trying their best to push their side on to equalize. Lisbie did give the home side more of a presence in attack looking to hold the ball up. David Mooney volleyed over on 70 minutes before Lisbie missed the best chance for the hosts to level. Dossena nicked the ball on the left and whipped in a cross for Lisbie but the veteran striker got his feet mixed up and his effort looped over the bar from 4 yards out.

Orient continued to press with Mooney having a shot brilliantly blocked on the edge of the box. Gianvito Plasmati returned from injury replacing David Mooney seeing the Orient revert to their third formation of the day in 4-3-3. While Steven Schumacher and Tyler Hornby-Forbes were introduced seeing Fleetwood settle for the draw going 5-4-1 looking to see the game out. Plasmati headed over from a Pricthard cross before the contentious decision of the match. Pricthard nipped the ball past Martin Crainey on the left with the referee blowing for a foul with the only decision of whether it happened in the penalty area. It was awarded just outside which incensed Liverani who was sent off for his protest, replays after the match highlighted the offence occurred just inside.

The Cod army saw the remaining minutes out to gain all three points with Orient feeling aggrieved with the penalty decision but ultimately Orient were not good enough in the game to get a result. Fleetwood move to ninth just 2 points from the play off places but the league remains close. With Orient in 20th outside the relegation zone on goal difference on 25 points they are only 11 points from the play off places. If and a big if Orient pick up form they will climb the table quickly but with results being like a roller coaster ride, anything can happen. Lundstram is a good signing at this level but Orient need to build with a new center half and all season they having been crying out for a right midfielder. Some pace in the team would help the man in possession with an option on the break and could be integral to an improvement in Orient’s form.

Hawks Fly Three Clear at the top

Harlow regained top spot with a 3-1 home victory over Great Wakering Rovers after Needham Market’s game was postponed. Robbie Martin put the Essex side on their way stroking home after 9 minutes but the home side could not double their lead before the break. Fabion Simms scored his second in as many games after 62 minutes to give the Hawks some breathing space but Jay Nash gave Rovers a lifeline with 13 minutes left heading home Tom Ranger’s cross. Harlow responded almost instantly with Junior Dadson volleying home 2 minutes later for a debut goal to put Harlow top for the first time since November.

After a 2-1 New Year’s Day victory at Waltham Abbey, Harlow made only one change with Robbie Martin coming in for Shane Stamp. Rovers were off the back of a 4 match winning run before travelling to the Harlow Arena and named an unchanged 11 after a 3-0 win over Romford. The away side looked to combat the Hawks home record where they have not lost a league match this season and lined up 4-3-3 the same as their hosts. In an even opening period, it was Harlow who took the lead after just 9 minutes. Alex Read was found in the right channel, looked up and played Juinor Appiah in behind the Rovers defence, the winger pulled back to an unmarked Robbie Martin at the back post where to slot home. Rovers were looking to break quickly with numbers but the chances were falling to their hosts with Read, Simms and Martin all having chances to double the lead.

Harlow were continuing to leave themselves open to the break with Tony Jacob and Tom Ranger linking up well down the right but the latter fired wide. Joe Skeels could have drawn level for the away side but couldn’t connect to a free kick. Jay Nash had the best chance for Rovers after a quick free kick, Jacobs progressed up the right flank and crossed to the back post but Nash could only head wide from 7 yards. Harlow heeded the warning with Adam Seals pulling off a fine double save to prevent Appiah doubling the lead just before the interval.

With Danny Chapman anxious before the break, his nerves would have been increased early in the second half went Harlow had chance after chance to add to their lead but failed. First Read headed wide a Billy Jones cross then Appiah crossed but a Hawk failed to connect. Billy Jones continue to impress in midfield after his goal on New Years Day and nearly added to his tally but after beating two men could not beat Seals in the Rovers goal. Junior Dadson came on for Appiah for his second debut for the Hawks and was inches away from tapping home Read’s cross. Rovers were finding it difficult to contain Harlow’s attack with Dadson’s volley being deflected wide for a corner. But Harlow did double their lead from the resulting corner, the ball fell to Simms on the edge of the area and the defensive midfielder slotted home.

Leon Antoine also came on for Billy Jones after recently rejoined the club but Nash could have halved the deficit after heading a Jacob’s cross wide. Harlow were keen to add to their 2 goals with Read going close after connecting with a Layne Eadie cross and Antoine could have had a perfect start to his second spell at the club but dragged his shot wide of the mark. Rovers made it a tense last 13 minutes for Harlow after an unmarked Nash headed home Ranger’s left wing cross. Dadson responded instantly after a long ball fell to the wide man, he hit it first time on the volley and found the bottom corner to seal the three points. Harlow could have added more to their tally but found Seals in inspired form with Antoine, Read and Dadson all having shots saved but Harlow did regain top spot.

After picking up just 9 points from a possible 18 in November and December Needham Market close the gap and overtook the Essex side at the top but after 3 wins on the bounce it appears the Hawks form has come back at an important time. Needham have two games in hand in second but Harlow have the points putting the pressure right back on Needham. With another home game next week, Harlow can really put the pressure on with Needham having a tough trip to third place Brentwood next week. Will the Hawks be further ahead come next week.

Spurs Strike Late…. Again

Christian Ericksen’s 89 minute winner gave Spurs their 3rd win in 4 on the road. In similar fashion to Aston Villa and Hull City away it was a late goal which gave Tottenham the 3 points. Harry Kane headed Spurs in front 4 minutes in, it took until the second half for Swansea to respond through Wilfried Bony. The hosts had their chances in the second half but it was Ericksen who settled the game to move Spurs up to 7th 4 points behind West Ham in fourth while Swansea drop to ninth.

Swansea off the back of a 3-1 defeat away at West Ham last week made two changes with Neil Taylor coming in for Jazz Richards and Gerhard Tremmel back in goal with Luca Fabianski missing out after his red card at Upton Park. After defeat on Thursday away in Turkey,  only Kyle Walker and Roberto Soldado kept their place in the starting 11 with Mauricio Pochettino shuffling his squad.

Swansea settled down into their normal passing rhythm but fell behind after just 4 minutes. Christian Erickson’s corner was headed home by Harry Kane who rose highest in the box to register his 3rd PL goal of the season and 12th in all competitions. Spurs started the brighter of the teams but Swansea still had Wilfried Bony in attack the top scoring player in the Premier League in 2014. The Ivorian striker went close after a succession of passes opened up Tottenham but Lloris saved well down to his right. Pochettino’s men were passing the ball around well playing the home side at their own game with Harry Kane shooting just wide after a great move.

Bony was the continual threat for the hosts with Routledge and Montero looking to feed the striker. Montero did find Bony in the 21st minute but a brilliant recovery tackle from former Swan Ben Davies denied the opportunity for Bony to add to his 7 goals in 12 PL matches. The center half pair of Fazio and Vertonghen were finding it hard to keep tabs on Bony at times ball watching letting Bony in space to receive the ball. Swansea were growing in the game but the away side had the threat of the break with Kane, Soldado, Lamela and Erickson looking to double the Spurs lead. Pochettino’s men were pressurizing the Swansea back 4 just as his Southampton players did last season. In a weekend full of diving, Harry Kane was fortunate not to pick up a booking for a dive after minimal contact between him and Montero.

The Swans could have leveled  minutes before the break after a brilliant passing move Sigurdsson found Rangel in the right channel and the pull back found Bony but his goal bound shot was blocked Fazio away for a corner. Spurs led at the break in a competitive contest but the Swans looked dangerous when they found Bony in the attacking third.

Swans started second half very brightly and equalized just three minutes into through that man Wilfired Bony for his 8th PL goal. A nice 1-2 between Rangel and Routledge, put the Swans winger in behind Neil Taylor, his pull back found Bony who had his first attempt blocked but made no mistake with his second to level the scores. After the goal the Welsh side were in the ascedancy with Ki and Bony having headed chances but both wasting their opportunities. Spurs introduced Moussa Demebele to try and stop the midfield dominance from Swansea while Gary Monk put on John Jo Shelvey in place of Leon Britton to try and grab the important third goal in the match.

Ryan Mason and Harry Kane went close for Spurs on the hour mark as they responded to early pressure from Swansea in the second half. However Swansea began to dominate once more going close on four occasions through Ki, Sigurdsson, Shelvey and Montero but were unable to find to the finish. Spurs were a threat on the break through Kane, Lamela and Erickson but could have retaken through the lead from a corner. It was almost a carbon copy of their first, Erickson corner was flicked towards goal by Kane but the England U21 striker saw his effort go agonizingly wide.

Spurs pushed for a winner in the last 10 minutes where they had scored 5 of their 18 league goals this season. Christian Ericksen scored late away at Hull City to give them victory and did the same at the Liberty. After having a shot saved, the ball was recycled and found the Dane in the box, he drilled his shot past Tremmel to give Tottenham all three points.

Tottenham continue to grind out results away from home and after defeat in Turkey in midweek it was a good response from the North London club. Swansea will feel disappointed that they didn’t get anything from the game after the amount of chances they had but Gary Monk will know his side have to be more clinical in front of goal. Harry Kane continues to lead the line for Spurs with another goal and his tireless display delights the Spurs fans. Wilfried Bony hit his 8th PL goal of the season scoring just under half of the Swans league goals, they will have to be on their guard in January where clubs may be up for poaching the Ivorian striker.

Swansea face three away trip over the Christmas period travelling to Hull, Liverpool and QPR while facing Villa at home on Boxing day. Spurs face Newcastle on Wednesday in the league cup quarter finals before 4 tough games over the festive period. They face Burnley at home next week before travelling to Leicester then face Manchester United at home and Cheslea away on New Years Day.

6 on the Bounce for Van Gaal’s United

Manchester United continued their improved form with their 6th win on the spin thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin Van Persie. Rooney and Mata gave United a 2-0 half time lead although Mata’s goal was offside. Van Persie put the result beyond Liverpool but did have their chances through Raheem Stirling and Mario Balotelli but again found David De Gea in top form. The result leaves United 3rd, 5 points behind their City neighbors and a full 10 points ahead of the red half of Merseyside.

United made three changes from their 5th win in 5 games against Southampton on Monday night with Phil Jones, Johnny Evans and James Wilson coming in for Paddy McNair and the injured pair of Marcus Rojo and Chris Smalling. With Wilson’s inclusion Rooney dropped into the midfield trio with Fellani and Mata. Liverpool lined up 3-4-3 making 4 changes from their 1-1 draw with Basel in midweek; Brad Jones in for Simon Mignolet making his first start in 21 months, Alberto Moreno in for Jose Enrique, Coutinho in for Lucas and Adam Lallana in for Rickie Lambert. The Reds lined up with no recognised striker with Johnson, Skrtel and Lovern as the back 3.

The away side started the brighter looking to make a fast start which they became known for last season. Without a known striker, the attacking trio of Stirling, Lallana and Coutinho were looking to spin in behind United and could have taken the lead on 12 minutes. A brilliant reverse ball from Lallana found Stirling bearing down on goal but the England International shot weakly at De Gea. United went straight on the attack opening the scoring through Wayne Rooney. Antonio Valencia did excellently down the right beating Joe Allen, he pulled the ball back to the onrushing Rooney who swept home for his 6th Premier League goal of the season just inside the box.

Liverpool were looking their most dangerous when countering on the break through Stirling but several times their young team were too eager to release the ball and chances went begging. Stirling’s second big chance of the first half came all from his own doing, jinking past Jones in the box, he tried to beat De Gea at his near post but the Spainard stood strong for United. Liverpool continued to have opportunities on the break but United were finding joy down the right through Valenica. United did double their lead with a dubious decision 5 minutes before the break. Young created space on the left and his in-swinging cross was flicked on by Van Persie to Mata at the back post who nodded home. The question was did the Dutchman touch the ball and from the replay it appeared the United front man did. It was a big blow for the Merseyside club who were hoping to go into half time only facing a one goal deficit.

Brendan Rogers introduced Mario Balotelli in place of Adam Lallana looking for an early response in the second half. Jordan Henderson should have done better early in the half from a Raheem Stirling cross but headed over the United bar. Liverpool should have halved the deficit 6 minutes into the second half but it came from poor United passing. After looking shaky at the back on Monday against Southampton passing backwards, Evans back pass fell short of De Gea. Stirling nipped in taking the ball to De Gea right side but failed to find the net for the Reds. Rooney was next to go close for United but his shot was easily saved by Brad Jones in the Liverpool goal.

United started to sit back trying to hit Liverpool on the break with the away side having a spell of possession but doing little to trouble the United defense. Van Persie could have had his third goal in a week if his touch from Valencia’s cross had gone the other side of the post. With De Gea’s continued development in recent weeks in to a top class keeper he kept his side’s lead in tact. Stirling was once again found behind the United back 3, Phil Jones did well to stop the shot but Stirling composed his self and found Balotelli but the Italian’s shot was brilliantly tipped on the bar by De Gea.

United added to their lead with Van Perise notching his 7th PL goal of the season, the home side broke away with Rooney making a run in behind Liverpool. His poor pass was poorly cleared to Juan Mata who unselfishly found an unmarked Van Persie who slotted home. Liverpool still searched for a consolation goal but De Gea saved well from Balotelli’s effort after being found by Henderson’s cut back. Balotelli again went close for Liverpool but man of the match De Gea kept his clean sheet.

United’s 6th win in a row continues their climb up the table and puts them just behind Man City and Chelsea. After doing enough in recent games, Van Gaal’s team continue to grind out results which more than you can ask for. However, with the injury crisis at the back for United, Van Gaal is finding hard to keep defenders fit for more than one game. But Brendan Rogers will be wondering how his side have not scored at least one goal in the match but with United having a top class keeper De Gea continues his growing reputation. With the festive fixtures coming up United face Villa, Newcastle, Spurs and Stoke where they could add to their win streak and ready to strike if City or Chelsea have a poor Christmas Period.

Pressure continues to grow on Rogers in the Liverpool dug out, with their place in the Champions League going in midweek and a defeat against their big rivals confidence will be dented. They face Bournemouth in a League Cup quarter final in midweek which will be no easy game against the team who top the Championship and are on a 12 match unbeaten record, last losing in September at Derby. With only two wins in their last 10, their form will need to pick up if they want to be in the Champions League shake up at the end of the season but their festive fixtures are not that kind. Three home games against Arsenal, Swansea and Leicester to go along with a tough trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley; Rogers will need to pick results up soon.

New Boss, Same Feeling

Erhum Oztumer’s curling free kick early in the second half helped Peterborough to their first league win in 7. Aaron McClean volleyed home from close range 9 minutes in to give Posh a perfect start after just picking up 1 point in their last 6. Shaun Batt equalized for the hosts 6 minutes before the break, drilling his shot past Alnwick but it was Oztumer’s free kick which keeps them in 9th just outside the playoffs on goal difference while Orient are now 3 points from safety.

After defeat for both sides last time out both made two changes with David Mooney and Gianvito Plasmati missing through injury for Orient, with them welcoming back Dean Cox and Shaun Batt into the starting 11. Posh made two changes with Harry Beautyman making his full debut and Craig Mackail-Smith coming in for Connor Washington and Jermaine Anderson after both ineligible in the FA Cup last week. Under new boss Fabio Liverani, the O’s played a 4-4-1-1 system with Cox playing just behind Shaun Batt while the Posh utilized a midfield diamond with Oztumer playing behind Mackail-Smith and Mclean.

Orient started brightly in front of their new manager, passing the ball around neatly looking to take advantage of Peterborough’s dented confidence. Dean Cox went agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock after Jobi McAnuff beat two men down the left, his pull back found Cox, but his shot was blocked on the line to keep the scores level. Craig Mackail-Smith partnered Aaron Mclean in attack after recently rejoining the club both on loan from their parent clubs looking to add to the 183 goals they scored between them in their first spell. It was Mclean who put the Posh in front, after Mackail-Smith was found in the left channel, he found Joe Newell unmarked on the left on edge of 18 yard box. His whipped cross found an unmarked Mclean who volleyed home his second goal in as many games at Brisbane Road.

The pace of Mackail-Smith and Mclean was causing Nathan Clarke problems at the back, whether to keep a high line or try and play the on loan Brighton striker offside. Orient probed for an equalizer with Dean Cox’s free kick missed at the back post but both sides were finding it hard to create chances. Orient remained the team with more possession but were finding it difficult to breach the Posh defense with only one fit senior striker in the team. The O’s did level 6 minutes before the break through former Posh striker Shaun Batt, Cox found himself in the left channel and went on a mazy run pulling back to Bradley Pricthard. Pricthard knocked down to Batt who made space and fired home to give Liverani and the O’s fans hope of a second home win of the season.

After equalizing the O’s went in search of a second with a period of pressure but lacked an end product as with the rest of the season. Former O’s youth product Harry Beautyman was making his first return to Brisbane Road since being released in 2011 and could have had the perfect day but blew his opportunity. A cross from the left was dropped by O’s keeper Adam Legzdins in the path of Beautyman but the on loan Welling man volleyed high and wide of the target. Scott Cuthbert drilled a shot wide of the mark just before half time but it was all square at the break.

It was De ja vu as Orient fell behind again just 2 minutes after the restart, Aaron Mclean was fouled on the edge of the box by Nathan Clarke. Erhum Oztumer stepped up and curled a delicious free kick beyond Legzdins for his first Posh goal since his summer move from Dulwich Hamlet. The home side searched for a second equalizer and introduced Jay Simpson in place of Shaun Batt with Liverani keeping just one up front with Cox behind. Simpson saw a header easily saved by Ben Alnwick after a Cox cross but the O’s were finding it hard to create chances. Peterborough were playing on the break using the pace up top and could put the game beyond doubt after Lowry and Clarke took each other out but poor decision making kept the score at 2-1.

With time running out for Orient, Josh Wright had a shot deflected which Alnwick clawed away from danger for Posh. Liverani chucked on Victor Adeboyejo for his first team debut in search of a late leveler. Joe Newell picked up a second yellow for a late challenge on Bradley Pricthard and Orient went so close to picking up a point. Dean Cox’s free kick was nodded on to Adeboyejo after Alnwick fumbled the header but the scholar’s toe poked effort was blocked on the line to seal the three points for Posh.

Another home defeat for Orient with their fourth manager of the season and another game where a team score with their only attempts on target. Just like Gillingham last week, Posh scored with both shots on target but didn’t look like threatening the O’s goal. With an injury hit squad just like much of the season, Shaun Batt was the only recognised senior striker fit for the O’s which is not ideal for a team which has lacked goals this season. Now three points from safety the big question is will the new boss be given time to try and improve Orient’s position. Once again the O’s lacked a cutting edge in the final third much like the rest of the season but with the next three games against sides in the bottom half; Liverani needs results quickly.
