A Night to Remember to A Season to Forget

In a week where Leyton Orient announced their fourth manager of the season in Fabio Liverani, it sees them face Peterborough in their first league meeting since the play off semi final 212 days ago. A night to remember for all Orient fans who have seen their side slide down the table since coming so close to the Championship last season. Both sides have not lived up to last season’s highs but under new boss Liverani, Orient are finally hoping for some stability after 3 managers in the first 19 league matches.

Liverani replaced Milanese who only recorded 2 wins out of 8 matches against a League 2 side and the club rock bottom of League 1. Milanese returns to his Sporting Director role and the new translator for Liverani who speaks very little English. Orient’s 2nd defeat to Gillingham in the space of three weeks in the JPT semi final was the last straw for Bechetti who has seen his sides form slightly improve. Orient however did record their first  home league victory since the play off semi final last time out against Crewe in a 4-1 win but 2 defeats in the following games resulted in Milanese fall.

Peterborough sit 9th on 27 points just three behind Oldham who sit in the last play off spot. The Posh started the season well but recent form has resulted in increased pressure on manager Darren Ferguson who understands that if form doesn’t improve he faces dismissal. Peterborough picked up 26 points in their first 13 games but since their home win against Barnsley in mid October, the Posh only have a solitary point away at Walsall in 6 games. The return of Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron Mclean has given them hope of their form improving with the pair notching 183 goals between them in their first spell at the club.

Peterborough have similar home and away records, but three of their four away wins came in their opening three matches. Their last away win came away at Crawley where they came from behind to win whilst in their other three away triumphants they have registered first. 6 of Posh’s 8 league wins have come when they have scored the first goal only picking up 7 points when conceding first. Marcus Maddison returns from injury whilst Mackail-Smith and Harry Beautyman are available after sitting out last week’s 1-0 defeat at Colchester.

Orient are looking for their season to pick up and 2 wins in their last 2 at home has seen the winless omen lifted. The O’s will be looking for the spirit that saw them overcome the Posh 212 days ago in their 2-1 win. But still missing key men with Lloyd James, Kevin Lisbie, Andrea Dossena are unavailable due to injury and Chris Dagnall still suspended, the squad will be tested to the limit again. The Orient squad will be looking to impress their new manager with recent news that the average age of the side is set to be reduce in January, players will need to be on their guard.

Prediction – Both teams will struggle in the game with limited confidence in both camps, Mclean to notch first for Posh while Cox will equalise for Orient, 1-1 in the end.

Early Carroll Singing at Upton Park

In a week where Sam Allardyce revealed that he chose to sign Andy Carroll over Wilfried Bony, it was the former Magpie who showed his manager why. A double from the former Newcastle number 9 and an assist for substitute Diafra Sakho saw West Ham come from behind for the second time in a week to move them to third in the table. Wilfried Bony did put the Swans ahead in the first half before Carroll’s double, Fabianski saw red before Sakho completed the scoring.

The home side made two changes from their win at West Brom in midweek with Morgan Amalfiitano and Mauro Zarate dropping out for Alex Song and Enner Valencia. Swansea welcomed back Angel Rangel at right back in place of Neil Taylor seeing Jazz Richards revert to left back.

The Hammers started the better with the majority of possession in their 4-4-2 system continuing with the diamond in midfield which has helped them to their best ever start to a Premier League season. The Swans known for their 4-2-3-1 system was being altered slightly when out of possession with Gylfi Sigurdsson pushing as a second striker to press the Hammers back four. Chances were at a premium with Nolan going close from a well worked Stuart Downing free kick but Fabianski saved well. The Swans took the lead against the run of play with their first attack of the match and in true Swansea fashion. A beautiful one two between Montero and Sigurdson saw a brilliant through ball between Jenkinson and Tomkins to Montero. The Ecuadorian midfielder cut back to the unmarked Wilfried Bony who tucked away his 7th goal in nine games to put Swansea ahead.

Swansea grew in confidence after the goal, looking dangerous on the break but still wary of the West Ham threat. Enner Valencia had a shot blocked after Carroll knocked down an Aaron Cresswell cross. Swansea could have doubled their lead twice: first as Sigurdsson forced  Adrian into a save, then after Kouyate was caught in possession,  Bony drilled a shot just wide. The Hammers continued to look for an equalizer with Cresswell looking for his second goal in a week after netting his first against Newcastle but his header was saved by Fabianski. But the home side did level 4 minutes before the break as Andy Carroll looped a header beyond Fabianski from Jenkinson’s cross for his first goal since March and 1st goal at Upton Park in 18 months.

Diafra Sakho replaced Enner Valencia at half time as the Hammers looked to go ahead but it was the visitors who nearly went back ahead through Bony. With pacey Montero on the break he found Bony who drilled a shot onto Adrian’s bar. The Hammers continued with the majority of the ball but they were almost gifted a goal by Leon Britton; the Swans midfielder was caught in possession but Sakho’s cross was put behind for a corner by Rangel. However West Ham did edge in front from the resulting corner as Carroll rose highest to notch his second goal of the game.

Swansea needed an instant response but were reduced to 10 men two minutes later when Fabinaski was deemed to deny an goal scoring opportunity. Carroll played a ball forward to Sakho who reached the ball just before Fabianski, the Hammers striker continued and saw his shot hit the post but the ref pulled play back to send Fabianksi packing. A harsh decision for the Swans keeper with Gary Monk already highlighting the decisions going against his team this season. Sakho could have put the game beyond Swansea 13 minutes from time as he beat Ashley Williams but again saw his shot hit the post when he could have squared the ball to Andy Carroll in the center

Swansea introduced Bafetimbi Gomis looking to go more direct to grab an equalizer for the visitors but they could not force Adrian in to a save. Sakho did grab his goal 3 minutes from time as Carroll flicked on an Adrian goal kick into the path of Sakho who fired beyond Tremmell.

The win moves West Ham into third place on 27 points before Southampton face Manchester United tomorrow night. The Hammers picked up their third win in as many games and have only lost one game in 9 away at Manchester United. With Andy Carroll back and scoring they have three strikers who can score goals in the Premier League with Valencia and Sakho. Swansea on the other hand have dropped 16 points from winning positions this season, it is obvious to see where Gary Monk needs to improve his team. Swansea sit 8th on 22 points but would be much higher if they could hold onto their leads in matches.

Next up for West Ham sees them travel to the North East to face Sunderland next Saturday whilst Swansea have a home game with Tottenham next Sunday.

Lessons not Learnt

Joe Egan’s second half header was enough to send Gillingham through to the Johnstone Paint Trophy Area Final against either Bristol City or Coventry. Egan headed home a corner 11 minutes from time to send Orient to defeat for the second time in three weeks at Priestfield.

Gillingham made two changes from their home draw with Port Vale last weekend with Bradley Dack and Luke Norris replacing Cody McDonald and Gavin Hoyte. Orient looking to avenge their league defeat at Priestfield three weeks ago made five changes from their 3-1 away loss at Bradford last week. Three were enforced with Andrea Dossena injured, Jack Price returning to Wolves after being recalled and Chris Dagnall suspended while Nathan Clarke and Dean Cox sat out. Romain Vincelot, Gary Sawyer, Jobi McAnuff, David Mooney and Shane Lowry all came in for the O’s.

In a scrappy opening period, Orient had the majority of possession but did little with the ball with only a David Mooney half chance of note. Although Gillingham had little of the ball they were looking to get in behind the O’s backline with Adam Legzdins looking slightly shakey in goal after his mistake last week. Orient’s first real chance came when Gary Sawyer crossed for the unmarked David Mooney but the Irishman saw his header go straight into the arms of Stuart Nelson. Both sides were finding it difficult to create opportunities from open play with the best opening coming from set pieces. Shane Lowry had two free kicks which went wide of the mark for the away side while Legzdins remained untroubled.

Orient continued to play with the ball but the tempo and pace was slow with Gillingham getting back into their shape. Gillingham were playing 3-5-2 with Bradley Dack and Doug Loft looking to support the front two where possible for the home side. With David Mooney and Ginavito Plasmati in attack for the O’s, there wasn’t much movement from the two highlighting the absence of both Jay Simpson and Chris Dagnall’s work rate. Orient’s play continued to be slow and lethargic with little options for the man in possession when in the attacking third but they could have taken the lead two minutes before the break. Jobi McAnuff’s free kick was flicked towards goal by David Mooney but Stuart Nelson pulled off a fine save to keep the scores level.

The second half started with a higher tempo with both teams looking to reach the area final where they had  the opportunity to get to Wembley. Although the higher tempo, chances were at a premium with Michael Doughty volleying over a cross for the Gills. Bradley Pricthard was inches away of putting Orient ahead after knocking a driven Gary Sawyer cross just wide at the far post. After all the problems three weeks ago defending set pieces it was Orient who looked the more threatening with Plasmati heading wide from a McAnuff corner. With 20 minutes remaining both teams looked to take the initiative with Shaun Batt replacing Plasmati for Orient and Cody McDonald and Jermaine McGlashan coming on in place of Luke Norris and Doug Loft.

It was the Gill’s substitutes who nearly gave them the lead with 11 minutes left, McGlashan made some space down the left and crossed for McDonald but a brilliant last ditch block from Elliot Omozusi kept the scores level. However from the resulting corner Joe Egan rose highest for the Gills, powering home to put them ahead. Mauro Milanese talked pre match about Orient marking tighter from set pieces after conceding all three goals in their defeat three weeks ago. Well, problems remain in defense for Orient with lessons not being learnt. Dean Cox was thrown straight into the action and went agonizingly close for the O’s with a dipping volley which went just over.

Gillingham reverted to a 4-4-2 after the goal looking to maintain their lead but could have conceding if Shaun Batt’s cross was turned in at the back post but the chance went begging for the O’s. The remaining minutes were played out by Gillingham as they advanced to the area final at the hands of Orient.

There remain big problems at Orient, injuries have been a problem and remain but Gillingham had one shot on target and still won the game. Everybody knows that it only takes one to win a game and yet again it came from a set piece. After the laughable events  with Russell Slade at the start of the season and the pressure on him at the start. Mauro hasn’t done much better, won 2 games in 8 which one was against a side from League 2 and one against the bottom side in the division. Although the side maybe playing slightly better football, he doesn’t fill you with confidence either in attack or defense. Orient look their most threatening in games when the ball is quick, one two touch cutting open teams. The problem remains no pace in the team apart from Batt which means the play is very slow, teams set their shape and Orient have no way of breaking down a resolute defense. Orient need stability but how long will it take for that to happen, either way results and performances need to improve otherwise Orient will be dragged even further into the relegation scrap.

“We Must Defend Better”

Orient boss Mauro Milanese takes his side into their relegation scrap with Crewe Alexandra on Saturday wanting more defensive stability. Milanese hinted before the O’s defeat to Gillingham last week about defending and attacking as a team but after conceding all three goals from set pieces, he wants more. Last week’s defeat saw the east London club drop into the relegation zone after a poor start to the season.

Crewe sit below the O’s in 23rd position but have picked up with 11 points in their last 10 matches after picking up just 4 points in their first 7. Alex manager Steve Davis wants “the performances to continue and the results will come, if we keep going, doing what we are doing, we are not a million miles away”. Davis is disappointed that his side haven’t picked up more points in recent matches but “with good spirit and confidence in the group, we look forward to every match”. Crewe have picked up 10 out of their 15 points at home picking up just 5 away. Their solitary away win came at Walsall, the key for Alex is start well and score the first goal. 14 out of their 15 points have come when scoring first, winning all 4 of their matches but have lost all 8 where they have conceded first.

Milanese slammed his players for giving away three goals from set pieces at Gillingham but the more pressing issue is 6 out of last 11 goals conceded have come from set pieces. Mauro mentioned the shocking nature of the goals with “the situation now a lot different, we need to be tighter, you can watch the man and not the ball”. Orient picked up their first home win of the season against Northampton last time out but are still seeking a first victory in the league. “It is a massive game at home but we are alive, there is belief in the group and we are creating more chances”. Headed goals have been major contributor to the 30 Orient have scored in all competitions with 12 coming from the head. But defensive frailties have caused problems, 4 out of Crewe’s 13 goals have been from set pieces which could cause the O’s trouble.

Orient have an injury headache again even after welcoming back Gianvito Plasmati, David Mooney and Romain Vincelot from injury last week with Jay Simpson and Shane Lowry being added to the injured list. James, Lisbie remain sidelined but Jack Price could be back in the fold for the home side after returning to Orient from Wolves. Crewe have no injury worries Marcus Haber is a doubt but everybody else came through their game on Tuesday where they lost away at Sheffield United.

Orient to register their first home league win of the season but not after a shaky start, 2-1 to the home side.

European Football’s effect on Domestic FIxtures

So all the talk after Champions League and Europa League fixtures is how will the team cope playing Thursday and Sunday. Clubs will need a massive squad so that they can rotate, keeping the team fresh to pick the right results up. Interestingly out of the top four finishers in the Europa League 2013/2014 they only lost 7 games between them after a European matchday.

It is a well known point that there are too many fixtures in the competition, if you reach the final you will play a total of 15 games; nearly half a season in most domestic divisions. After match day one last season, Sevilla the current holders, lost 1 game in 14 after playing on a Thursday picking up 11 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat. However a key point to add is in Portugal, Spain and Italy; domestic games can be all across the weekend depending on broadcasting and other commitments. In other European leagues, some teams will play the majority of their games on the Saturday but with the Europa League this changes.

There has been four match days in the competition so far, below is the record of all the Europa League teams combined in their domestic fixtures following a Thursday game. The top 7 leagues that were taken were: Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A, Bundesliga, Primeira Liga and Eredivisie.

Europa League after Europe

As the results confirm, there is a 20% difference in the win percentage of the top leagues and the rest. Only one team remained unbeaten in all 4 matches after the Europa League in PSV who have won all four.  Interestingly is how the different leagues in Europe compare when broken down.

Top 7 leagues after Europa

The best performing teams after a midweek match day are in the Netherlands with PSV and Feyenoord winning 6 out of the 8 matches. The French trio have only picked up 2 wins out of 10 with Guingamp losing all four matches. Guingamp won the French Cup earning their place in the competition but with little resources and experience of Thursday/ Sunday football lie 18th in Ligue 1.

In England teams seem to always struggle with the demand on two games in four days with squad depth becoming an ever growing issue. Between them, Everton and Tottenham have only won two matches out of 8 and losing 4. Only Fiorentina (31) have made more changes from their starting 11 on a Thursday to a Sunday than Tottenham (29). The Premiership is deemed one of or if not the most competitive league in the world which means it is hard to compare to other European Leagues. But Feyenoord (6) and PSV(4) have made the least amount of changes, highlighting that players can play 2 days in four days. The age old question is can a team be successful on all fronts making so many changes?

All top clubs domestically in Europe will be striving to participate in the Champions League with the sponsorship, revenue and media influences. With a new broadcasting deal set to start from 2015/2016 season from BT Sport there appears to be a 108% increase on the revenue teams will receive for qualifying to the Champions League. Champions League includes the top teams from all of the European leagues and with these big teams comes TV deals. Typically these big teams will play in one of the televised slots throughout the weekend. After the last round of Champions League fixtures all of the English, Italian and French teams played in televised slots either on Saturday or Sunday. So not only do they play a day or two before the Europa League teams they are more likely to have a prolonged break before their domestic fixture.

Champions League after Europe

Out of the 32 teams currently in the Champions League 20 play in the top 7 divisions in Europe but unlike the Europa League, there is only a 8% difference in the win percentage from the teams in other divisions. 14 teams remain unbeaten in their four domestic matches after a European match day with 9 playing in the top 7 divisions compared to only one from the Europa League. Juventus and Benfica joined the Europa League after the group stages last season and didn’t lose a game in 9: in fact both were unbeaten in after all 15 European matchdays. The breakdown of the top 7 leagues at their records are below:

Top 7 leagues after CL

There is a higher win percentage after a CL match day but then again the quality is higher than the Europa League teams. The English four have only one 6 out of then 16 matches compared to Italy with 6 out of 8 and Spain 9 out of 16. Surprisingly Germany has the lowest win percentage with runners up Borussia Dortmund only winning one game and Schalke winning none of their games after Europe. It appears that no matter what competition you play in, teams will always be unpredictable after Europe with long travel and squad rotation becoming factors.

CL and Europa League after matchday

La Liga is the top domestic league after European football but as you may think out of the 14 wins the big two in Real Madrid and Barcelona won 50% of them. European football brings in much needed revenue, sponsorship and attention to all the different leagues but it has been noted that teams look lethargic after a European match day. Many have reported on the effect a midweek European game has on a domestic team and their performance. A mix between consistency and squad rotation appears to knit European and domestic football together: too much change can have a harmful effect on domestic football.

Last Gasp Cody Moves Gills Out of Relegation Zone

Cody McDonald’s volley deep into stoppage time moved Gilingham clear of the relegation zone. Gianvito Plasmati opened scoring from the spot early in the second half after Danny Kedwell’s first half spot kick was saved. Leon Legge popped up with two nearly identical headers to put the home side 2-1 ahead before Michael Doughty was sent off for two yellows. Chris Dagnall looked to have rescued a point for the O’s in stoppage time but McDonald popped up with the winner moving the Gills to 19th while the O’s fall to 21st.

Both sides reached the semi finals of the JPT in midweek and it was announced prior to kick off that they would meet each other. The home side made three changes from their defeat at home to Bristol City last week with Joe Martin, Cody McDonald and Kortney Hause dropping out for new signing Adam Chicksen, Jermaine McGlashan and Brennan Dickenson. Orient welcomed back Romain Vincelot, Gianvito Plasmati from injury to the starting 11 while Andrea Dossena made his debut at left back.

Gillingham started the better, blowing an opportunity from the spot after it appeared Scott Cuthbert took out Brennan Dickensen in the box. Danny Kedwell stepped up but had his penalty saved by Adam Legizins in the Orient goal. Gillingham 4-3-3 formation was giving the away side problems as they switched between 4-4-2 and 3-4-1-2. The Gills extra man in midfield was given them more options in possession as they had the best of the opening exchanges. Dickensen volleyed over the bar for the only real shot of note after the penalty. With Orient changing systems, Gillingham looked to exploit the spaces that were left through McGlashan and Dickensen on the break.

The away side began to grow into the game with Cox floating in and out of the space behind the strikers. The Gills tempo was higher than the O’s which meant the away side were finding it hard to create opportunities. Orient carved through the Gills defense in the only bit of one touch passing in the first half but the final ball to Vincelot was slightly too far in front of the returning midfielder. Orient welcomed back David Mooney who has been unavailable through injury since September for Jay Simpson who looked to have had a re-occurrence of the injury forcing him off on Tuesday. With Mooney’s introduction the O’s began to make chances and keep possession, Cox twice went close after link up play with Mooney but the game remained goalless at the break.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with an early penalty this time for the away side. Pricthard fed Wright who seemed to get clipped by Joe Egan giving the referee the opportunity to point to the spot. Plasmati stepped up, sending Nelson the wrong way he put the O’s 1-0 ahead. Gillignham were straight on the front foot after the goal looking for an early response as they had picked up no wins after falling behind. After Pritchard picked up a yellow for dissent, the ball was pumped into the Orient box, Leon Legge rose above Nathan Clarke to loop his header home for the equaliser. The home side were still looking dangerous on the break with Kedwell lashing over from Doug Loft’s cross.

Both teams made changes on the hour mark with Dagnall replacing Plasmati with the Scottish striker very unlucky to miss out from the start after assisting both goals on Tuesday. Danny Kedwell was replaced by Cody McDonald much to the annoyance of the home fans who didn’t like Peter Taylor’s decision. McDonald nearly had impact after creating a pocket of space but his snap shot went wide of the post. Dossena was an outlet down the left for the O’s and was providing crosses for the front two of Mooney and Dagnall but couldn’t put the O’s in front. Neither Cuthbert or Vincelot could prod the ball home after a goal line scramble from a corner.

The Gills took the lead from a carbon copy of their first, a free kick into the box with Leon Legge glancing his header past Legizins. Orient now had to go for it as their lead had evaporated, they had a man advantage for the last 12 minutes after Michael Doughty was sent off for two yellows. After picking up a yellow in the first half for a late challenge, he threw the ball away giving the ref no option but to sent of the Gills left back. Orient pressed for the equalizer but despite the man advantage continued with the slow build up play. Dagnall twice went close with Nelson saving shots straight at him.

The away side thought they had grabbed a point after Chris Dagnall rose to head home from a Scott Cuthbert’s cross. But after conceding two goals from set pieces already, Gillingham struck deep into added time to snatch the win. McDonald volleyed home from a right wing corner to give the home side their first win in the league since September. In a week where Mauro Milanese called the next 2 games as imperative to the rest of the season, Orient have got off to the worst start.

In a game of few chances the O’s threw away points from 3 set pieces, criminal in modern day football. The last four goals the O’s have conceded  have come from have been from set pieces, Orient’s passing was better but lacked tempo and urgency with the ball. Orient have struggled all season to break down teams with Milanese talking pre match about moving the ball side to side and switching play. But to make this work the ball needs to be quick to create the space for Dossena and Cuthbert wide. Orient’s best play on Tuesday came from quick one/two touch play but there were limited glimpses against Gillingham. We are only in November but next week’s home match to Crewe seems as much win if Orient’s season is to kick start. Welcoming  back Mooney and Vincelot helps the quality in the team improve but with Simpson and Lowry potentially missing the next games it doesn’t really help the situation.

1st Goal Will be Crucial

Orient boss Mauro Milanese hopes his side take confidence into their League 1 clash with Gillingham in Kent tomorrow. The O’s picked up their first home win in 10 against Northampton on Tuesday in the JPT. Milanese expressed that “We hope to make a difference to the situation, open a few doors and get away from the bottom”. With Orient’s next two games against sides below them in the table, the O’s boss knows “they will very angry being in the bottom and we will need to focus as it will be a tough test”.

Gillingham go into the clash picking up their first win in 10 away to Crawley in the JPT and will have improved confidence against a side in a similar predicament to themselves. The Gills haven’t won in the league since September where they beat Peterborough at home where all 3 of their league win have been achieved;12 out of their 14 league points have been gained at home winning 3 and drawing 2. Gillingham picked up 11 points in August in September whilst only picking up 3 in their last 6 games.

In contrast, Orient accumulate the majority of their points away with 3 wins and 4 draws; 13 out of their 16 points have been gained away. The team from East London have only lost 2 in their last 15 away matches to Crawley and Port Vale, coming away from Sheffield United, Bristol City and Fleetwood with points. With an improved performance in the JPT, Milanese has been doing a lot of work on the training ground to try and improve the O’s form. “Learning to defend and attack as a team, looking to play good quality football trying to look at different systems” stated Milanese but mentioned that key squad players “are still a way away but he is looking forward to having more quality in the team with competition for places”.

Both teams will need to start well having better records when scoring first: Gillingham 10 points out of 14 and Orient 8 points out of 16. All of Gillingham home wins have been when they have scored first whilst all games Orient have scored first have been away. When the Gills have conceded first they have only picked 2 points from 8 games while Orient 5 points from 9 games. Gillingham top scorer Danny Kedwell has 5 goals from 10 matches in the league while Darius Henderson could return for the O’s but Simpson and Dagnall played well together on Tuesday. Dagnall assisted Simpson’s and Bartley’s goals on Tuesday; both are likely to start.

Milanese is asking for the fans to play a key role in the game “we hope as many to come as they can to support and get behind the team”. After doing the double against the Gills last season, fans should be optimistic of a win at Priestfield tomorrow. Recent signing Andrea Dossena could feature which could see Orient play 3-4-1-2 which Milanese mentioned in his program notes. Shane Lowry and Nathan Clarke should keep their place at the heart of the defence after both impressed against Northampton.

With Orient looking like they are turning the corner with recent performance, an away win at Gillingham would bring more confidence in the group. Prediction for the game is Orient will continue their improved form with a 2-1 success; Simpson and Dagnall with the goals for the O’s.

Today is the Jay

Jay Simpson and Marvin Bartley struck to secure Orient first home win of the season in the quarter final of the JPT. After failing to win at home since April barring the play offs, Simpson struck his 6th of the season before Marvin Bartley completed the scoring in the dying minutes to see of Northampton. The win sees Orient progress to the semi finals where they could play Bristol City, Gillingham or either Coventry or Plymouth with the draw taking place Saturday.

After losing to Oldham in the 1st round of the F.A. Cup on Saturday, Milanese made four changes with Adam Legizins, Marvin Bartley, Gary Sawyer and Elliot Omouzi coming in for Gary Woods, Scott Cuthbert, Shaun Batt and Mathieu Baudry. Northampton made 5 changes but kept the same back four from Saturday with Emile Sinclair keeping his place in attack; with 4 games in 11 days, it is a tough run of fixtures for the Cobblers.

Both teams started quietly with neither team taking the initiative, Orient lined up 4-4-2 while Northampton adopted 4-3-3 looking to catch Orient on the break absorbing pressure and countering. Dagnall and Simpson continued in attack with both becoming lively and having half chances. The home side were playing some neat football with Cox, Dagnall, Simpson and Wright all linking up going close after a neat lay off from Cox saw Simpson’s shot go straight at the keeper. Orient were making openings with the final ball sometimes being a second late but had a warning when Northampton had a goal disallowed for offside.

Orient responded immediately breaking the deadlock, Legizins clearance was beautifully flicked round the corner for Simpson by Dagnall who entering the penalty box and made no mistake for his 6th of the season and 3rd of the competition. The first time Orient had broken the deadlock at home this season and continued to dominate proceedings. Dagnall could have doubled the lead after the move of the night, brilliant one touch play saw Cox play a delicious ball with the outside of his foot to Dagnall. Unfortunately the ball got stuck under the striker’s feet and the chance went begging.

Orient started the second half brightly with Dagnall doing excellently to create space but blazing his shot wide. Scott Kashket replaced the goal scorer Simpson after the former Hull striker picked up a knock in the latter stages of the first half. Wilder waited 10 minutes before he made a triple change with Marc Richards, Chris Hackett and Kelvin Langmead coming on. Richards and Hackett completing their comeback from injury after missing a series of games.

Northampton began to grow in the game with Orient failing to retain possession with the ball not sticking up front; a trait which has been seen at home this season. Northampton’s chance to equalize came with 20 minutes left, Chris Hackett beat Lowry to the byline crossing for Mohammed; but the on loan Port Vale striker glanced his header agonizingly wide of the target. Shaun Batt was introduced as Orient looked for an outlet to keep the ball which nearly paid off after a great run for the substitute but Dagnall struck his shot against the post from the cross.

The Cobblers continued with the majority of the possession as Orient began to get edgy at the prospect of ending the Brisbane Road Hoodo. However the away side couldn’t create clear cut chances to level the match with Legizins not being tested in the Orient goal. The O’s made the game safe in the dying minutes with Dagnall’s tireless work, laying Bartley in who stroked home to guarantee Orient’s first home win in 10.

It was a much improved home performance with link up play between the attacking players being very good. At times Orient had the tempo and passing back to a level which cuts through teams, Wright was beginning to pull the strings with Cox, Dagnall and Simpson working well together. Clarke and Lowry looked solid at the back and should continue on Saturday away at Gillingham. Make no mistake Northampton were a league below and didn’t create many clear cut chances but a win is a win. Sometimes it takes an ugly win to gain confidence, with the home win scenario now gone; the O’s can take confidence for their league form. With Jack Price returning this week, players returning from injury Orient are getting stronger and not far away. The key is to continue the performances and the results will come.

JPT or Bust?

Chris Wilder takes his Northampton side to Leyton Orient in the quarter final of the Johnstone Paint Trophy tomorrow night off of the back of a 0-0 draw with Rochdale in the FA Cup on Saturday. Wilder hinted that his side will go with a game plan to frustrate the O’s, who have not won at home all season, hitting them with an attacking threat. Orient have struggled to break down teams this season at home with Chesterfield, Swindon, Preston, Rochdale and Colchester all hitting them on the break and leaving with three points.

Northampton have had notable away wins this season in the cup competitions, beating Wolves 3-2 in the League Cup and Portsmouth 2-1 in the previous round of the JPT. With Orient lacking in confidence after a poor start to the season, the Cobblers will be looking to equal their best run in the JPT. Northampton have only managed to reach the third round twice in 2012/2013 losing to Orient and 2009/2010 losing to MK Dons while on the other 4 occasions losing at the first round stage. After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Wilder is hoping his side are on the up with key men in Marc Richards and Chris Hackett returning from injury. With one win in their last six, Town are not in the best form but both clubs know the form book goes out of the window in the cup.

Orient only have the league and JPT to concentrate on after losing 1-0 at Oldham in the FA Cup on Saturday. Mauro Milanese hinted that he was taking the JPT seriously before the Oldham game and with the O’s close to having only the league left, a cup run could kick start the season. Orient will be looking to replicate their form in 2012/2013 season when they reached the Area Final losing to Southend over 2 legs but with Orient’s best performances coming on the road they will need a result a home to prolong stay in the competition. Orient could welcome back Darius Henderson who is available after serving his 3 game suspension while Gianvito Plasmati could feature after missing the cup game at the weekend.

Northampton will pose a threat to an Orient side which has league 22 goals in the league this campaign and with limited confidence Town may exploit this. Without a home win since 26th April the crowd could get on the O’s back if Northampton frustrate them. Orient have failed to break down teams this season only scoring 17 in their 16 league matches. If Town go ahead, it will be a tough ask for Orient.

Prediction 1-0 Orient.

Swans down the Gunners

2 goals in three second half minutes saw Arsenal lose a lead for the second time in a week. After squandering a 3-0 advantage to Anderlecht in midweek, the boys from North London were at it again in South Wales. Alexis Sanchez put the Gunners ahead just after the hour but a splendid free kick from Gylfi Siguurdsson levelled the game before Bafetimbi Gomis headed the winner 3 minutes later leaving Wenger’s side 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea.

Swansea, off the back of a draw at Everton last week named ex Arsenal youth Kyle Bartley at center half. Tom Carroll debutised for Leon Britton who was on the bench while Marvin Emnes and Jefferson Montero started as Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer missed out through injury. Arsene Wenger continued with Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal at the heart of the defence while Calum Chambers was at right back. Alexis Sanchez partnered Danny Welbeck up front with Theo Walcott on the bench.

In a low key start both team struggled to create chances with the majority of the play in the middle third. Jefferson Montero caused Calum Chambers problems down the left from minute one; on another day Chambers could have given away a penalty after what looked like a push in the back of Wilfred Bony. Swansea began to grow in the game with Montero the main architect with Bony peeling on to Monreal who was playing away from his accustomed left back spot. Swansea 1st real chance came 10 minutes before the break when Bony found Emnes but the former Middlesbrough man’s shot was easily saved.

Arsenal failed to create a chance until the stroke of half time when Sanchez fed Welbeck on the edge of the area. The England striker played a one two with Chamberlain but his shot was well saved by former Gunners keeper Fabianski. Ramsey and Mertesacker went close for the visitors but neither was able to break the deadlock.

The visitors continued the second half in the same vein with Chamberlain and Cazorla both going close but they did break the deadlock on 63 minutes. Chamberlain played Welbeck in the right channel, he cut back to lay the ball on a plate for Sanchez who netted his 8th goal in the league, 12th in all competitions and his 5th goal in 3 games. Despite the goal they still looked vulnerable down the left with Montero continually reaching the byline with Chambers second best.

Swansea levelled 15 minutes before the end with a stunning free kick from Sigurdsson who curled a delicious effort past Szczesny for his 2nd goal of the season to add to his 7 assists. Gary Monk pushed on his side for a winner but took off their top scorer Wilfred Bony for Bafetimbi Gomis. The substitution paid off after 2 minutes when Gomis headed home a Montero cross after the winger beat Chambers for the upteenth time. Swansea’s 1st headed goal of the season while Burnley (8) are the only side to conceded more headed goals than Arsenal (6).

Wenger chucked on Walcott and Wilshere to try and rescue the game but to no avail. “it was very disappointing to throw another game away; we had to keep it tight defensively and look for our second chance”. He added ” we were beaten on our right side and in the air” but with Montero causing havoc all game, Wenger had plenty of time to avoid the problem. Swansea leapfrogged their opponents into 5th on 18 points while Arsenal are in 6th, 12 points from the top. After two failures to keep a lead in a week, the International break comes at a bad time for Wenger as his side face Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Southampton in the space of 11 days after the break.
