New Year Slump in Devon

Leyton Otient slumped to their heaviest league defeat of the season away at Exeter yesterday afternoon. The Grecians when ahead after just four minutes when David Wheeler tapped in at the back post before Ryan Harley did the same at the start of the second half. Harley added a second from the spot after Tom Parkes fouled Ollie Watkins before second half substitute Liam McAlindon completed the scoring handing Exeter only their second home win of the season.

Fresh from their 4-1 victory at Newport on New Years Eve, Paul Tisdale made four changes to his side with Reuben Reid back in attack in place of Liam McAlindon, Craig Woodman filled in at left back in place of Connor Riley Lowe. While Ryan Harley and Jordan Tillson started in midfield.

Orient who snatched a late point against Cambridge on New Years Eve were enforced into three changes. Teddy Mezague, Sandro Semedo and Sam Dalby all missed out after suffering injuries against Cambridge so Ollie Palmer started alongside Paul McCallum in attack, Yvan Erichot came in at center half while Callum Kennedy started on the right side of midfield.

os-at-exeter

In a fairly quiet opening couple of minutes Gavin Massey created the first opportunity for the away side after good link up down the right with Myles Judd, the winger found Paul McCallum but his header was saved by Christy Pym. The O’s found it hard to contain Reuben Reid earlier in the season at Brisbane Road and were having the same troubles once more but the Grecians striker could only fire wide.

However the home side didn’t have to wait long to open their account after a deep ball into the box was cleared. Two headers into the box found David Wheeler who had nipped off the right flank in front of Nicky Hunt to flick past Cisak to put his side ahead. Exeter were full of confidence with Reid having a field day in attack with no O’s defender getting close to the former Plymouth man.

It was Reid who created the next opportunity after his neat control at the back post saw him set up Ollie Watkins but the midfielder could only fire his shot wide. The long ball was causing Orient all sorts of problems with Cisak saving well after Watkins outpaced Myles Judd and shot.

The majority of Orient’s play was predictably down the right hand side with Massey and Judd linking up well but from a Judd cross, McCallum’s header was saved by Pym. But Exeter went very close to doubling their lead almost instantly. A long ball forward saw Reid knock down to Watkins, the midfielder broke beyond the Orient defence but his shot cannoned off the post. The rebound hit Tom Parkes who had to clear off the line to prevent a second.

Massey had the away sides last half chance of the half when he broke behind the Exeter back line but pulled his shot wide of Pym’s post.  Reid’s physical presence saw Ryan Harley have a shot blocked after a neat knock down before David Wheeler’s front post header from a corner was blocked by Yvan Erichot.

Orient were lucky to only be one down at the break but that margin only lasted for five minutes of the second half when Wheeler crossed from the right finding Harley at the back post to slot in. Josh Koroma was introduced from the O’s bench in place of Callum Kennedy but Orient still looked adrift of ideas in the attacking third.

Nigel Atangana fired over from outside the box before the Grecians were handed the opportunity to wrap up all three points. Substitute Liam McAlindon played in Watkins who broke behind the O’s defence but his run was halted by Tom Parkes, leaving referee Michael Salsibury no option but to point to the spot. Harley coolly stepped up and slotted home for number three.

Midfielder Robbie Weir replaced Ollie Palmer as Andy Edwards opted for a 4-5-1 system for the last 20 minutes. Koroma was a bright spark for the O’s with the youngster keen to get on the ball and run at Exeter. His mazy run from the left wing saw him have an effort on goal but it flew high and wide over Pym’s goal.

After suffering a 4-0 defeat at St James Park last year, the remains of the 259 travelling Orient fans were wondering if it was to happen again. Exeter duly obliged when Atangana’s poor pass was intercepted in midfield, substitute Robbie Simpson played McAlindon in who slotted between Cisak legs to make it four.

The O’s players looked dejected with the injury crisis mounting up when midfielder Robbie Weir went down under no pressure. Weir’s reaction along with McCallum’s would suggest on initial viewing that the signs do not look good. Adeboyejo replaced Weir as the remaining minutes went without any danger leaving Orient reeling in 20th spot, four points above the relegation zone while Exeter stay in 11th on 33 points.

After four points from the previous two games, where will this result leave Orient? Confidence in the squad looked once again shot in the second half as the team crumbled once more to a side who before kick off had scored only five goals at home and won only won game. I appreciate that they were a side in good form and on a good run, but these are the games that you need your side to turn up for. The O’s players looked off the pace and not switched on from the first minute.

Reuben Reid had another field day in attack, with the Orient back line unable to deal with a long ball forward and Ollie Watkins’s runs from deep. The man who scored a hat trick on New Years Eve with runs from deep alongside his goal at Brisbane Road against Leyton Orient in the same manner. Orient were lucky to only be 1-0 down at the break but the question remains what confidence will be left after another poor display.

The two home results were positive, I am not talking about the performances in the predicament Orient find themselves in  points come over performance any day of the week. Orient need points quick to keep the gap between the bottom two and themselves but with a squad that is increasingly relying on younger players to get them out of the mess, some of the experienced players need to take notice and step up to the plate.

Yesterday was a game where Exeter wanted the game more than Orient, the travelling fans who made the journey will all tell you that the writing was on the wall from the minute Reuben Reid fired wide after two minutes. Exeter were quickly, hungrier and first to every second ball throughout.

I don’t mind losing a game, just like most Orient fans, we get used to it. But when there is no fight, commitment or passion on the field, it is hard to take. Well the stats tell there own story, not one yellow card for an O’s player yesterday, no one who put a tackle in frustration. The team went down without a fight.

Andy Edwards was always given an uphill task inheriting the worst squad Orient have had in a number of years along with injuries to senior players, January is a massive month for him. I mean with Weir’s injury we have two central midfielders currently at the club with one who’s contract ends this month. However from Edwards post match interview, the initial signs do not look good for recruitment.

A disappointing day, a poor result, another defeat and I am sure I will be saying that several more times this season let alone this year. All Orient fans know the predicament that we find ourselves in, it might help if the players understand it too. Let it sink in for a moment that Colchester United who were utterly terrible against us in November are sitting 8th, two points outside the playoffs. Where as we sit four points above the bottom two………

Another home game Saturday against Barnet where points are needed but as I sit here with Accrington away tickets booked for a Tuesday night in March, you sometimes wonder why?

Ollie Strikes Late to Give Orient a Point

A 94th minute equalizer from Ollie Palmer handed Leyton Orient a precious point in their battle to beat the drop. Cambridge took a first half lead when Harrison Dunk slotted home from inside the area. Orient struggled to create in attacking areas with Cambridge wasting opportunities to seal the points from Dunk and Luke Berry. But Palmer’s low finish from Paul McCallum’s knock down sees Orient unbeaten in three home league games for the first time since December 2015.

Fresh from their 3-2 Boxing Day triumph, manager Andy Edwards named an unchanged O’s side. 17 year old goalscorer Sam Dalby retained his place alongside Paul McCallum with the pair netted all three O’s goals on Boxing Day. Callum Kennedy returned to the bench after missing the Crawley match.

orient-vs-cambridge

After five consecutive league wins, U’s manager Shaun Derry named an unchanged side for the third consecutive game. Winger Piero Mingoia continued on the right flank fresh from his winner against Stevenage on Boxing Day while Uche Ikpeazu was the main man in attack with Luke Berry playing slightly deeper.

cambridge-at-orient-1617

In a rather slow start neither side was able to gain a foothold on proceeding with possession changing hands on a constant basis. Paul McCallum headed wide following a Michael Collins free kick before the away side highlighted their danger. Luke Berry who was drifting into space throughout, cut back on to his right foot but his teasing cross just evaded Ikpeazu in the Orient penalty area.

Orient were slowly working their way in the game with 17 year old Sam Dalby creating the next opportunity for the hosts. His break away down the right saw the youngster cut back on his left foot but his cross was blocked. The loose ball fell to Myles Judd who’s cross was headed wide at the back post by McCallum.

Nicky Hunt’s volley from distance flew narrowly wide following a loose ball from McCallum long throw before Sandro Semedo had a great chance to put Orient ahead. Gavin Massey broke from the wide, his ball to McCallum was quickly shifted to Semedo on the left but his goal-bound shot was parried wide by Will Norris in the U’s goal with Brad Halliday clearing the loose ball.

As the game was opening up, the away side struck on 21 minutes, after a throw on the right hand side, Ikpeazu rolled Michael Collins. Nigel Atangana tackle saw the ball fall to Berry on the edge of the area, the midfielder scuffed his initial effort with Myles Judd tackling him to prevent him shooting. However, the ball fell to the unmarked Harrison Dunk who slotted home putting the U’s ahead.

Following the goal, Orient struggled to gain possession with Cambridge in control, Berry fired straight at Cisak from distance while Harrison Dunk could only shoot wide after a clever back heel from Berry. Orient were handed a blow when defender Teddy Mezague was replaced through injury with Yvan Erichot replacing him.

Neither manager made any changes to their sides at the break but Orient were still only making half chances through Massey and Judd down the right. Edwards was forced into a second change when Ollie Palmer replaced striker Sam Dalby was forced off with an ankle injury.

Shaun Derry’s men nearly added a second following a quick break from an O’s corner, Ikpeazu found Dunk on the left wing but the goalscorer could only drag his shot wide. Ikpeazu then saw an effort blocked after good pressure on the O’s defence. Orient did force Norris into a save but Paul McCallum could only head straight at the keeper following a Collins corner.

Ikpeazu had a goal ruled out for offside before another quick counter from the away side saw Dunk’s pull back find Berry on the edge of the box however a brilliant block saw the effort cleared away. Max Clark saw a effort from distance tipped behind by Alex Cisak before Dunk wasted a glorious opportunity to wrap up the three points. After Clark’s run forward was found by Mingoia through ball, the substitute crossed to Dunk at the back post but the winger saw his header clip the bar and go over.

Norris was still rarely troubled in the United goal with substitute Ollie Palmer only shooting tamely at him before Josh Koroma fired wide. However with Cambridge failing to put the game to bed, Palmer popped up in added time to stroke home after McCallum knock down to hand Orient a precious point and preventing a sixth straight league win for Cambridge.

Five games in and Andy Edwards and Danny Webb have finally got a team playing with some passion and for the badge on the front. The duo seen to blending some young blood with some experienced players and we are slowly starting to turn the corner. The mood is different around the group, management, stadium and fans; there is some belief that Orient can pick up a result.

To put in to perspective before yesterday’s game, the last 14 home league games Orient had conceded first they had lost. Yes, Cambridge had the chances to wrap up three points on more than one occasion in the game but how many times have we said that in recent years about the Orient?

And what a difference having a midfield two in Michael Collins and Nigel Atangana who both will put their foot in. Collins in the last two games has played like the captain of the side. If Orient haven’t wrapped up his signature, then they are making a horrendous mistake.

Robbie Weir on the bench but perhaps Edwards has been quite canny here. After his mistake against Wycombe, Edwards dropped him for the visit of Crawley, about time if you asked me. But paramount to Orient is picking up results and getting points on the board. Taking him out of the firing line, will help the starting 11, then when points are starting to flow, Edwards can slowly bring Weir back in.

A point yesterday was exactly what Orient needed to back up the win on Boxing Day however the Exeter game tomorrow is the more important game. A team who has struggled at home picking up just one win at St James Park in the league and have the worse home record in the entire football league.

A lovely 4 hour car journey tomorrow, it better be worth it……..

“They’re on a Good Run, but It’s Winnable”

Leyton Orient assistant manager Danny Webb is hoping his side build on last weekend’s home win over Accrington Stanley when they travel to Wycombe tomorrow. The win moved the O’s three points clear from the relegation zone and Webb knows that the main priority is increasing the gap at the bottom.

  • Sit 21st on 21 points
  • League Record – P20  W6  D3  L11  F22  A26
  • Form in last eight (league) – W3  D0  L5  F10  A11
  • Form in all competitions (most recent first) – WLLLWLLLW

Webb stepped up to assistant manager to Andy Edwards after Alberto Cavasin was sacked in November and is relishing the role. Speaking to leytonorient.com it has been good, I moved to first team coach in the summer which was another progression in my career. Each day I am learning things that I couldn’t learn in the academy system”.

  • Away Record – P9  W4  D3  L2  F15  A12
  • Last away results (most recent first) – LWLLWLDL
  • Have only conceded two goals in the first half of an away game – both just before half time (Doncaster and Hartlepool)
  • Orient and Luton are the only two sides in League Two not to conceded a goal away from home in the opening 30 minutes of games
  • Have only trailed for 77 minutes away from home in the league- the least amount in the league (31 came in their last away game at Doncaster)
  • Have scored first in six of their nine away games

Orient picked up their first win at home since August last weekend and Webb is hoping that some of the pressure has been eased, “they are a strong set of boys, we are human and have confidence dips, as players there is nothing better than a home win to get you over the slump”. Webb revealed that the main priority was to get three points, “the performance was better than I first thought but we told the boys to do whatever it takes to take the points and in the grand scale of things it was massive”.

  • Orient have scored in four of their last five games – scoring only in three of them
  • Have failed to score in seven league games, only Exeter (9) have failed in more
  • Have scored in their last three away league games and scored in eight of their nine away leagues games this season
  • Only scored two or more goals in two of their last 16 games – both away from home

Midfielder Gavin Massey acknowledges that his side need to back up the win last weekend at Wycombe tomorrow. Speaking to leytonorient.com last week “we can’t get too carried away, we done that a few weeks back. We know that next week when we travel to Wycombe they will be flying, it will be a tough game and we have to use some of the resistance that we used today and hopefully get some points there”

  • Orient have not won back to back games since August
  • Both teams have scored in 10 of their 20 league games – seven of their nine away matches
  • But only two of their last eight games in all competitions has seen both teams score
  • 15 of their 22 league goals scored have come in the second half games – including nine of their last 12
  • 17 of their 26 goals conceded have been in the second half
  • Seven of their 11 losses have been by just one goal

Massey revealed that that with Orient’s position, Edwards and Webb have gone back to basics “sometimes it will be a scrap, we have got to win first and second balls, we might play longer and we need to understand as a team we need to start climbing the table”.

  • Record scoring first – W5  D2  L1    away  W3  D2  L1
  • Have won 15 of their last 18 league games scoring first
  • Have won eight of their last 11 away league matches scoring first
  • Have only lost one of their last 14 away league matches – last away game 3-1 vs Doncaster

Edwards was pleased with his side performance but most importantly the clean sheet “we spoke about clean sheets and that is exactly what we got, following on from the one against Barnet, we are pleased to get another one. We need to build on that. Everybody contributed today, that is important going forward. It is not going to pretty at times trying to get out of the situation. Have to work hard, be resilient and keep building on today” Leytonorient.com He added “over time we hope to develop a style of play but at the moment being hard to play against is key”.

  • Last weekend was Orient’s first clean sheet in four games
  • Have kept two in their last five games
  • Have kept four in 25 games all competitions – all four in the league
  • Kept just one clean sheet in their last six away games (3-0 vs Colchester)

Webb is aware of the form of Wycombe ahead of tomorrow, “they are on a run, but not too long ago they were near the bottom but seven wins on the trot is very good, credit to Gareth AInsworth. It will be a tough game after going to Doncaster, but we are aware of their threats and we will try and impose our style of play”.

  • Record conceding first – W1  L10      away  W1  L1
  • Have only won one of their last 22 league games – W1  D2  L19
  • Win came 22/10/16 3-1 at Hartlepool
  • Have only won one of their 17 away league matches – W1 D6  L10

Wycombe head into tomorrow’s clash on the back of seven consecutive wins in all competitions, winning 2-0 at Notts County last weekend. Goals from Adebayo Akinfenwa and Scott Kashket helped move Wycombe up to 6th in the table.

  • Sit on 31 points
  • League Record – P20  W9  D4  L7   F25  A22
  • Form in last eight (league) – W5  D2  L1  F12  A6   – only Yeovil (5) have conceded less
  • Only Barnet (18) have taken more points in their last eight
  • Form in all competitions (most recent) – WWWWWWWLW

Manager Gareth Ainsworth was pleased with how his side dealt with Notts County early on last weekend. The Chairboys were under pressure in the opening minutes but managed to push on for another victory. Speaking post match to wycombewanderers.co.ukthey caused us problems and had shot on goal. I thought the boys dealt with it really well and we grew into the game and the chances started to come”.

  • Kept five clean sheets in their last seven games
  • Kept back to back clean sheets at home
  • Kept clean sheets in five of their last seven home games
  • Have only conceded once in the last 450 minutes of league football
  • Kept seven clean sheets in the league  – Only Portsmouth (8) have kept more
  • Kept four of them at home – only Yeovil (5) have kept more at home

Ainsworth is making sure his players keep their feet on the ground despite their current run, “it was a really good win, we want to get number eight on the board. I told them their is no pressure from me, we don’t go into games thinking we can win them, believe me we don’t go in arrogant”He added “we go in knowing if we work hard and our socks off as a team, we will always have a chance in games”.

  • Conceded 15 of their 22 goals in the second half – including their last seven and nine of their last 11
  • Only Yeovil (5) have conceded less first half goals than Wycombe
  • 56% of their goals have been scored in the first 15 and last 15 minutes of matches – 14/25
  • Five of their nine wins have been by one goal
  • Their last four wins and five of their last seven wins have been by at least two goals

Scott Kashket has been devastating form since his arrival in late August from Leyton Orient. 10 goals in 11 games so far, Kashket has been a real revelation with Wycombe quick to extend his short deal to 2019 earlier in the month. Despite facing his old club tomorrow, Ainsworth thinks Kashket will take it in his stride “he will give what he gives, he has given everything and is turning into a name around the place and the league. He is very quick and has good control. He is happy and he will get on with it but hopefully he scores one against them” Wycombe Sound Sports

  • Have scored in their last 10 matches – scoring 23 goals in total
  • Have scored two or more in nine of their last 10 matches in all comps
  • Have scored two or more in five of their last seven home league matches and eight of their 20 league matches
  • But both teams have only scored in eight of their 20 matches- the lowest in the league
  • Only a third of their home matches have seen both teams score

Ainsworth is looking forward to returning to Adams Park after playing the last three games away. Speaking to Wycombe Sound Sports earlier today (Friday) we are well looking forward to Orient, we don’t expect to win but if we play like we have been playing we have a real chance”. Wycombe have a incentive for season ticket holders to bring friends to the game for £5 with Ainsworth keen for football to play a key part in the community “it is really important for everyone in the local community, we want to give something back”.

  • Home record – P9  W6  D1  L2  F14  A7
  • Best home defensive record in the League
  • Last home results (most recent first) – WWLLWWWW
  • Have won five of their last six home league games
  • Only team in League Two to not concede a goal in the first half of a home league game
  • Only Wycombe and Norwich have not conceded a goal in the first half of a home league match in the Football league
  • Have only trailed for 52 minutes at home in the league – least amount in the league
  • Not trailed in their last seven games – last trailed in a league game 29/10/16

Defender Aaron Pierre is keen for his side to continue their form and defensive solidity . Speaking to wycombewanderers.co.uk last weekend ” I love clean sheets, we kept one and that is the main thing. I don’t think they had a chance on target which is credit to us”. Pierre focus was quickly on the next games “we are on the up, we focus on Orient now, we have the same mentality, win our individual battles, press high up the pitch and work hard for each other and the results will come”.

  • Record Scoring – W9 D3  L1    Home W6  D1
  • Have won their last five and eight of their last 10 scoring first
  • Opened the scoring in 13 of their 20 games – nine times in the first half
  • Scored first in their last 10 games
  • Only lost one of their last 28 league games scoring first – W20  D7  L1
  • Unbeaten in their last 15 home league games – W12  D3
  • Only lost one of their last 35 home league games scoring first – W25  D8  L1
  • Last defeat came 03/10/15 vs Northampton

Despite Orient’s position in the League, Ainsworth is aware “there are no guarantees in this league. They have a good team of individuals, they haven’t played well as a team yet. Some of their names in their are good, Jay Simpson scored a hat full of goals last season, he is a great striker” . With a new manager Ainsworth is aware “he is learning and wants to perform, they will be dangerous. We have to be at our best no doubt. We want to make this one count”.

  • Record conceding first – L6    home L2
  • No win in last 16 home league game conceding first – W0  D3  L13
  • Have not won a league game after concedin first sinc 13/12/14 4-1 vs Southend
  • Played 33 – W0  D7  L26

Team News

Orient are without Liam Kelly and Harry Cornick who remain injured while striker Ollie Palmer is a doubt with a dead leg. Defender Teddy Mezague could be included after making his debut in last weekend’s win over Notts County. Striker Paul McCallum will pushing for a start after his performance from the bench last week while Myles Judd looks set to continue at right back.

Wycombe will be without striker Adebayo Akinfenwa who is suspended after his red car last weekend. Paul Hayes could replace him if he recovers from his thigh injury which kept out at Notts County. Myles Weston is available for selection while midfielder Garry Thompson is pushing for a start. Striker Scott Kashket looks set to face his former club.

Danny Webb on Kashket “I came when he was in the under 16’s. In training he had great confidence and an eye for goal. He became a pro but he wasn’t a major part of our plans at the start of the season. He went to Wycombe and has stamped his authority their and is scoring goal. Fair play and we will keep an eye on him tomorrow.”

Inside the Chairboys

Wycombe, one of the in form sides in League Two, head into tomorrow’s clash with Leyton Orient looking for their eight straight win. The sequence of wins has pushed Gareth Ainsworth’s men into the play offs and with a hectic festive period, the Wycombe boss will be hoping his side can continue their form.

Wycombe started the season slow picking up just five points from their opening six league matches, sitting 22nd in League Two. However, the Chairboys soon picked up form and are now flying up the League Two table after another win last weekend, 2-0 away at Notts County.

Since the 9th September, Wycombe have taken 26 points from a possible 42

  • Only Plymouth, Doncaster and Carlisle (29) have taken more points in that period.

Last weekend

2-0 win at Notts County with goals from Adebayo Akinfenwa and Scott Kashket

Starting formation last weekend

Change of Fortunes

Wycombe change in fortunes and from has come from Gareth Ainsworth finding a formation that suits his players. In their 2-0 win over Hartelpool, the Wycombe boss moved to a 4-3-3 formation to combat their approach, it worked and he hasn’t looked back.

The system is helped by Ainsworth consistent team selection with the nine of the 11 starters being named in six of the last eight matches in all competitions.

In fact after Paul Hayes missed last weekend’s win, 10 of the 11 starters at Chestefield in the FA Cup 2 weeks ago have been named in 5 of the last 8 games.

starters

In their seven straight wins, Wycombe’s run has been built on their ability to defend, keeping 5 clean sheets in their last seven games. This has been built from the back five including keeper Jamal Blackman who have played in five of the seven games, keeping four clean sheets.

The back five of: Jamal Blackman, Michael Harriman, Aaron Pierre, Anthony Stewart and Joe Jacobson have started 11 of the last 16 matches.

clean-sheetsThe back four works closely with the midfield which helps give them protection with either one or two deeper midfielders. The eight names above have started six of the last nine games together.

Strikers

Unfortunately for Wycombe they will be without forward Adebayo Akinfenwa after he was sent of last weekend at Notts County. In the new 4-3-3 system, Akinfenwa was the focal point with Paul Hayes and Scott Kashket (recently) the foils off of the striker.

Scott Kashket

The former Orient striker will be looking to haunt his former club tomorrow after making the summer switch from East London in the summer. Kashket was initially signed on a short term deal but after netting nine in his opening eight games, including an FA Cup hat trick, he was quickly offered a deal until 2019.

The 20 year old is small but very quick on his feet and looks to run in behind defenses. Kashket spoke to the football league paper just last week stating “I am very pleased with how things are going right now and I couldn’t be happier. Since coming to Wycombe, the boys have all been really welcoming and the manager has been great with me”

He plays the way I want to play, where I start out wide and am able to come inside which has been working so far”.

Kashket moving inside to create a shooting opportunity

I am one of those players who gets more confident the more I score and with Christmas come up and a lot of games, it is a good time to go on a streak”.

Kashket will offer a major problem to Orient’s backline tomorrow with his low centre of gravity and his willingness to drive forward and behind defenses, alongside his speed he is a real danger.

Matt Bloomfield

The 32 year old midfielder is enjoying his 12th season as a Chairboy after signing a one year contract extension in the summer. The midfielder made his 400th appearance earlier this season and has played 24 times for the club this season.

His experience and knowledge of the game helps the Chariboys no end in the middle of midfield. The midfield has played in a attacking role this season and has been the first link between the midfield and the strikers in recent weeks.

Midfield

With the change in formation came a move to a midfield three which is easily interchangeable within game to either a 1 deep and 2 forward or 2 deep and one forward.

Running from Midfield and Support

With the energy and confidence running throughout the team, Wycombe like to commit men forward in attack. With the attacking nature of the system it allows the three strikers and two of the midfielders to attack with the backup of cover behind them.

The use of the striker as the focal point allows two of the three midfielders, O’Nien and Bloomfield, to feed of knock down to get the side up the pitch.

breaking-forward

Last weekend, four men breaking forward

The threat of the midfielders breaking forward causes one problem but with Kashket, Hayes and Cowan-Hall, all three will look to break behind the opposition defense.

Like a lot of teams in the game now, Wycombe have the ability to press high up the pitch forcing teams into mistakes. With the three forwards, teams will be weary to play out from the back along with the changeability in midfield, teams can be press high up the pitch.

Set Pieces

Most teams have a dead ball expert in their side and Wycombe are no different with Joe Jacobson taking the mantle. The full back already has four assists this term and his delivery can be very dangerous into the opposition box.

To go alongside the delivery, Wycombe will pose an aerial threat with Pierre, Stewart, Hayes, Thompson all capable of scoring with their head in the box.

In their recent FA Cup game at Chesterfield, three of their five goals came from set pieces. Their second goal was part of a set piece routine where two men ran towards the corner taker, with the ball being hit to the runner from deep.

Defending

Wycombe recent run has been built on scoring plenty of goals but also the ability to keep a clean sheet. The down side to their 4-3-3 system is it requires either the midfielders or the wide forwards to cover the space in wide areas which is left. The system can be very narrow at times with the space left down the flanks to exploit.

Key Points to Watch out for Tomorrow

  • Runs from midfield (Bloomfield, Gape and O’Nien)
  • Runs in behind Orient, (Kashket, Cowan Hall)
  • Midfielders looking for knock downs from the striker
  • Threat from set pieces with Jacobson’s delivery
  • Press in attack
  • Space left in wide areas to exploit

It Will be Good to Finish the Year on a High

Leyton Orient manager Andy Edwards is hoping his side can kick start their season at home to Accrington Stanley tomorrow afternoon. With both sides sitting just above the relegation zone, a win for the O’s could give them some confidence heading into the Christmas fixtures.

  • Orient sit 22nd on 18 points
  • League Record – P19  W5  D3  L11  F21  A26
  • Form in last eight (league) – W2  L6  F9  A12
  • Form in all competitions (most recent first) – LLLWLLLWLLLDLLLDW
  • Have taken only 11 points from last 42 available – joint worse in League Two
  • Only Rotherham (3) have taken less points in the Football League in that period

Orient did not play last weekend after getting knocked out of the FA Cup in Round one but Edwards has found the two weeks beneficial for his side to improve on the training pitch. Speaking last weekend to leytonorient.com “it has been good, we have been able to really focus on training, try and implement some of the ways that we want things done: how we train, what we do, how it leads int applying on a Saturday”.

  • Failed to keep a clean sheet in last three games
  • Only kept one in their last 11 games in competitions (3-0 vs Colchester 12/11/16)
  • Only kept three clean sheets in 24 games this season, one at home
  • Failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven home games
  • Have conceded two or more in four of their last six home games
  • Have conceded the opening goal in their last eight home league matches and nine of their ten home matches this season

Edwards’s first game as O’s boss was a 3-1 defeat at Doncaster two weeks ago but is hoping that his side can end the year on a high. Speaking earlier today to leytonorient.com “it has been a difficult year and season. It will be good to finish the year on a high, the games come thick and fast over the Christmas and New Year period. We need to pick up as many points as we can as we look to move up the table”.

  • Have scored in three of their last four matches
  • Have failed to score in six of their ten home league matches
  • Failed to score in five of their last seven home games
  • Only scored two or more in six of their 19 league matches and two of their last 12 matches (both away)

Orient’s major problem all season has been their wretched home form which has seen them lose nine of their 10 league games at Brisbane Road. Edwards understands that “our home record has not been good enough, the players are aware of that, the staff are aware of it. We aim to put it right as soon as possible starting tomorrow”.

  • Home record – P10 W1  D0  L9  F6  A14
  • Only Exeter (2) have taken less points in the football league at home than Leyton Orient
  • Last home results (most recent first) – LLLLLLLWLWL
  • Only Exeter (3) and Oldham (4) have scored less at home in the football league than Orient
  • Seven of their nine defeats at home have been by just one goal

Goalkeeper Alex Cisak acknowledges that the two weeks on the training ground was much needed for his side. Cisak who spoke to leytonorient.com today stated “we all needed the work with the gaffer. He got his way of football across to us, we have been working very hard”.

  • 2/3 of Orient’s goals scored have been in the second half (14/21)
  • Nine of Orient’s last 12 league goals have been scored in the second period
  • 60% of the goals involved in Orient matches have been in the second half
  • 71% of Orient’s goals scored have been away from home

Sitting outside the relegation places on goal difference Cisak knows that “we haven’t been good in all areas, which is why we are down the bottom of the league”. The Austrailian mentioned that his side had worked on defending set pieces “we have worked on the whole lot, from defending to attacking. Set pieces we have been struggling with them all season and have been doing quite a bit of work on that. We have covered everything our shape and pressing at the right time”.

  • Have conceded 17 set piece goals this season
  • Both teams have scored in 10 of their 19 league games but only three of their 10 home games
  • Have only led for 70 mins at home, only Exeter (64) have led for less at home in League Two
  • Only Morecambe (463) have trailed for more minutes at home than Orient (429)

Despite Accrington’s position in League Two, Edwards is aware that Stanley will come and play football at Brisbane Road tomorrow, “they are a good footballing side, they are very competitive. I saw them last weekend at Woking and were very impressive, they have a real good style about them, they like to play, like to pass and work hard as a team – it will be a tough game”.

  • Record scoring first – W4  D2  L1       home W1
  • Their defeat to Doncaster last time out was their first defeat in 17 league games scoring first – Won 14      Drew 2
  • Have only lost one of their last 16 home league matches scoring first – W12 D3 L1
  • Last defeat came 16/01/16 3-1 vs Exeter

Under previous manager Alberto Cavasin, Orient were criticised about not scouting the opposing teams. Edwards revealed that all the training this week was “game related, it was more geared to Accrington and how we think they might play and the problems they may cause. Also it is about how we play and approach the game, our style and tactically what we are looking to achieve”.

  • Record conceding first – W1  L10          home L9
  • Win came away at Hartlepool 3-1       22/10/16
  • Have lost 19 of their last 22 league matches conceding first
  • Orient have lost their last 14 home league games conceding first
  • Only scored in five of those games, failing in the other nine
  • Only won one of their last 21 home games – W1  D3  L17
  • Last win came on Boxing day 2015, 3-2 vs Portsmouth

Stanley arrive in E10 on the back of a 3-0 win last Sunday against Woking which saw them progress to the third round of the FA Cup. Accrington have struggled in the league this season sitting just two points above the relegation zone and are without a win in their last six league games – losing four of them.

  • Sit 20th on 21 points
  • League Record – P19  W5  D6  L8  F20  A26
  • Form in last eight (league) – W1  D3  L4
  • Form in all competitions (most recent first) – WDLLLLWLDW

Stanley have found respite in the FA Cup picking up their only wins in their last nine games in all competitions. Stanley’s poor form has coincided with their inability to find the back of the net which they did for the first time in the three away games last weekend. Manager  John Coleman acknowledged “confidence is hammered when you don’t score goals- when you are not scoring goals it’s a recipe for any slump” accringtonstanley.co.uk

  • Have scored in their last two games but failed in four of the six before them
  • Failed to score in five of their 19 league games – four of them away
  • Have not scored an away league goal in 309 minutes of football
  • Last scored 01/10/16 vs Cambridge
  • Have only scored two or more goals in five of their 19 league games – only one of their last eight league

In November, Stanley went on a run without scoring in 450 minutes of football which was ended with Ronny Boco’s goal against Yeovil. Coleman highlights that there is a key formula to follow “you have got to take your chances and keep them out at the other end but I think the longer you go without scoring, the edgier the defence will get and we need to ease that”.

Stanley went very close to promotion last season but have not found their form so far this with their away from being a concern. Despite their league position Coleman will stick to principle and continue to play the same way “we have a great belief in the way we play and we have a system. Sometimes as a manager you scratch your head as you don’t get the points your performance deserves but we believe what we are doing is right and we are seeing positive signs”.

  • Away Record – P9  W2  D3 L4  F7  A10
  • Last Away Results (most recent first) – WLLLWDWL
  • Last away win in the league was 2-1 vs Colchester, 24/09/16
  • Only Crawley (8) and Cheltenham (7) have taken less points away from home in League Two
  • Only Ipswich (4) and Aston Villa (6) have scored less away goals than Stanley in the Football League

Defender Mark Hughes realises that it is key for his side to start to pick up results, speaking to accringtonstanley.co.uk earlier “it is about putting a run together, it is not early in the season, we are getting to the midpoint now, the four or five games in December can be crucial” He added “the next part of the season is massive, it can be make or break for the second part of the season”.

  • 72% of their goals scored have been in the second half – 18/25
  • Only one of their last 11 league goals has been scored in the first half of matches
  • In fact 73% of the goals in Stanley’s league games have been scored in the second half – 33/45

With the league still very tight, only 11 points separates Wycombe in 7th and Newport County in 24th. Hughes knows the importance of putting a run together “Newport are only three points behind us, we played them four weeks ago and they were ten behind us, it is very tight and putting a run together can change everything”.

  • Have only netted once in the first half of away games, 10/09/16 vs Notts County
  • Both teams have scored in 12 of their 19 league games , four of their nine away
  • But only one of their last six games in all competitions

Hughes returned to Stanley in Janaury 2016 and revealed that is the best club he has been at in his career, “this is a club where you never change when results are bad, when results are going down we stick to the way we want to play. We keep playing the same way and believe we are doing the right things”.

  • Four of their five wins have been by one goal
  • Only Crawley (49) and Yeovil (101) have led for less time in away games than Accrington (102)

With the league exceptionally tight Coleman called the game “a big game, we are in close proximity to them and we need the win. We need to get ourselves into a position where we are not looking over our shoulder”. Orient sit only two points behind Stanley with Coleman acknowledging that “Orient will want to reel us in and if we don’t win tomorrow we will right in the mix”.

  • Record scoring first – W3  D2  L1                away W1  D1
  • The Loss came to Morecambe 3-2 in August
  • Only Morecambe (5) have opened the scoring less times in League Two this season
  • Have only lost one of their last 17 league games scoring first – W12 D4  L1
  • Only lost one of their last 20 away league matches  – W16  D3  L1
  • Loss 2-1 vs Exeter, 23/01/16

The 54 year old is hoping his side can benefit from Orient’s off field problems “they have had a number of managers and it can be damaging as it can take a while to get a feeling with a new manager and learn how he wants them to play”.

  • Record conceding first – W2  D3  L7            Away W1  D1   L4
  • Have lost four of their last five, taking only one point from last 15
  • Their away win came at Colchester, 24/09/16

Team News

Leyton Orient should be able to include Nicky Hunt who missed the trip to Doncaster a fortnight ago. Yvan Erichot and Ulrich Nnomo remain doubts while Liam Kelly and Harry Cornick remain unavailable. Myles Judd will be hoping to continue at right back after impressing in his first two senior appearances for the club.

Goalkeeper Elliot Parish is a major doubt after jarring his knee at Woking last weekend, Coleman could have to call up an Under 18 keeper to cover on the bench.. Zak Vyner has continued to undergo tests with parent club Bristol City after missing last weekend’s cup tie and Janoi Donacien remains ruled out.

Head to Head – Leyton Orient 0, Draw 0, Accrington Stanley 2

Last meeting – Accrington 1-0 Leyton Orient 25/03/16

The sides met for the first time last season with Stanley winning both games 1-0.

Prediction  – Leyton Orient 2-1 Accrington

Inside Stanley

After going agonizingly close to achieving promotion last season, Accrington have found life in League Two more difficult this term. With a poor recent run of form Stanley have been sliding down the table, sitting just two points above the relegation zone.

Progressing through to the third round of the FA Cup last weekend with a 3-0 win at Woking, manager John Coleman will be looking for it to be a springboard for his side in the league.

Without a league win in their last six, Stanley have struggled to pick up points this term especially away from the Crown Ground.

  • Last league win was 15/10/16 – 2-1 vs Blackpool

A major problem for Stanley has been their poor away from picking up just nine points from a possible 27 available.

  • Only Crawley (8) and Cheltenham (7) have picked up less points on their travels.

Last League Game

1-1 vs Yeovil

Coleman tends to play with just one striker in attack either Terry Gornell or Billy Kee with an attacking player sitting slightly deeper in the no 10 role. However, the attacking qualities of the squad the system can be interchangeable either 4-4-1-1 or 4-1-4-1.

The furthest forward midfielder (McCartan in recent weeks) will look to get into positions between the opposition’s defense and midfield.

Stanley have struggled to score away from home this season and are currently the lowest scorers on their travels in League Two. However they will always offer a threat down the wings with the wide men very tricky in attack.

John O’Sullivan and Jordan Clark are very direct looking to attack their full back when they receive the ball in attacking areas. Both are very good at committing defenders, looking for a pull back to either Kee or Gornell in the center.

With interchange in attack and the willingness to attack, Stanley can press teams high up the pitch forcing mistakes. It has proved it’s worth so far for Stanley who have creating opportunities from pressing the opposition.

Target Man

The presence of Billy Kee and Terry Gornell is very important to Stanley when attacking. Both front men provide a physical presence against the opposition, holding up the ball, laying off to runners from midfield.

Kee’s form last season was integral to Stanley getting so close to achieving promotion. 17 goals in 51 games last season was important but his hold play and ability to play upfront on his own.

knock-down-flick-on-by-keeThe ability of Kee to win balls in the air allows the midfield of Stanley to gamble on the second ball. When the ball is played forward, Kee or Gornell has options of who to flick or lay the ball off to.

The threat of midfielders running beyond the striker will cause the opposition problems along with the pace that Stanley offer on the counter attack. Accrington can be lethal if a team commits too many men forward.

Defending

With the interchangeable midfield going forward, Stanley can be caught on the break with teams running at their back four. The defense can drop deeper, which creates an area in front of the defence which teams can exploit.

Stanley can also be susceptible to long balls forward which turns their back four towards their own goal. Against Morecambe earlier in the season Mark Hughes was sent off after being caught out by a long ball forward.

Last Season

Accrington completed the double over Orient last season, winning both games 1-0. The games were settled by runners behind and use of Billy Kee as a target man.

Key Points

  • Gambling on the second ball
  • Runners off the striker (Kee or Gornell)
  • Threat of wide players
  • Back Post runners (late)
  • Counter attack
  • Space left in midfield
  • Committing men forward and being left exposed

“Going Back to Basics”

New Leyton Orient manager Andy Edwards is taking his side back to basics after his appointment on Wednesday. Edwards becomes Orient’s third manager of the season, replacing Alberto Cavasin who was sacked after his sides 1-0 home defeat to Exeter on Tuesday; his eighth defeat in ten games.

  • Sit 22nd on 18 points
  • League Record – P18  W5  D3  L10  F20  A23
  • Form in last 8 (league) – W2  D1  L5  F8  A9
  • Form in all competitions (most recent first) – LLWLLLWLLLDLLLD
  • Have only won twice since the start of September
  • Taking only 11 points from a possible 39

Edwards  has already taken charge twice this season after Andy Hessenthaler was sacked in September but made it clear that “we are going back to basics”. Speaking ahead of his sides tough trip to Doncaster tomorrow, Edwards knows that everyone at the club needs to pull together. “We are in a relegation fight, we need to make sure we stick together as a group of players, staff and from the fans to the top. We must work our socks off to get out of the situation” leytonorient.com

  • Away Record – P8 W4  D3  L1  F14  A9
  • Have the 4th best away record in the league
  • Only Exeter (15) and Plymouth (21) have taken more points on the road
  • 83% of their points have come away  – 15/18
  • Last away games (most recent first) – WLLWLDLDW

The defeat to Exeter on Tuesday was Orient’s tenth of the campaign with only Exeter (11) losing more in League Two this season. Midfielder Nigel Atagana knows that his side have to do better, speaking after the loss to leytonorient.com the next game is massive, it won’t be easy but tomorrow we have to come in and focus on Saturday’s game, hopefully looking for an away win. We have to come back with points”

  • Have failed to score in nine of their last 14 matches
  • Have scored three goals in their last two away league games
  • Failed to score in two of their last three away games in all competitions
  • Only Exeter (8) have failed to score in more league games than Orient (7)
  • 14 of their 20 leagues goals have come away from home
  • 14 of their 20 goals have been scored in the second half

Captain Robbie Weir was substituted on Tuesday and has been crticised publicly for his displays this season but  welcomed the appointment of Edwards until the end of the season, “he has stepped in now, we have no excuses. He knows the leagues, he is a great coach and the perfect man for the job”.

  • Both teams have score in just 50% of their league games
  • Only one of their last six has seen both sides score
  • But six of their eight away games both teams have scored

Speaking to leytonorient.com on Friday, Weir is knows that his side have no excuses now, “he has been here from day one, we all know what he is about. He has got respect, everyone knows his preparation and he give us all the information we need. It is the managers first game in charge and we hope to put on a big performance”

  • Seven of their ten defeats have been by a one goal margin
  • 15 of their 23 league goals conceded have been in the second half
  • No team has conceded less first half goals than Orient in League Two (1)
  • Have only trailed for 46 minutes in away league games this season – the least in League Two
  • Only Orient and Luton have failed to conceded in the opening 30 minutes of an away game this season

Edwards took charge of his first training session yesterday, with the “players all receptive, there was a lot of energy and enthusiasm with the application spot on”. With the O’s sitting just outside the relegation places on goal difference, Edwards understands what needs to be improved, “we need to be organised and structured, have good knowledge of the opposition, we may simplify our game and go back to basics”He added “we need more clean sheets and to defend better as a group”.

  • Kept only one clean sheet in last 10 matches (3-0 vs Colchester)
  • Only kept three in 23 matches this season
  • Kept one clean sheet in last five away matches – two in 11 away matches
  • Only scored two or more in six leagues games – five of them away

It doesn’t get much harder for Edwards who’s first proper match in charge is away at Doncaster Rovers, “it will be a tough test, they are on a good run of form, have good players, good manager but we will go there full of optimism”.

  • Record scoring first – W4 D2 L0
  • Only scored first in one of their last 14 games
  • Have won 14 of their last 16 league games scoring first

  • Only lost one of their last 14 away games scoring first – W9 D4 L1  – last defeat away at Hartlepool 3-1 (November 2015)

A positive on Tuesday was the performance of 17 year old defender Myles Judd who made his first team debut for the club. Judd started at right back but reverted to left back after Callum Kennedy was substituted at half time but was Orient’s best performer. The Orient scholar revealed he the presence of Nicky Hunt helped him massively, “all of the lads were good to me. Nicky was a massive help giving me information and help with positioning” leytonorient.com

  • Record conceding first – W1  L10     away W1 D1
  • Only won one of their last 22 games conceding first – W1  D2  L19
  • Have lost 13 of their last 14 games conceding first
  • Last win came at Hartlepool, October 22nd 3-1 win
  • Won only one of their last 16 away games conceding first – W1 D6 L9

Doncaster head into tomorrow’s clash third in League Two, coming off a 2-1 home win over Hartlepool last weekend. A late Liam Mandeville strike earned Rovers another three points in their search for an instant return to League One after suffering relegation in May.

  • Sit 3rd on 33 points, five points off top spot
  • League Record – P17  W10  D3  L4  F35  A24
  • Only Plymouth (12) have won more games in League Two
  • Top Scorers in League Two, only Newcastle (36) and Scunthorpe (40) have scored more goals in the football league
  • Form in last 8 (league) – W5 D2 L1  (Only Carlisle (19) have picked up more points
  • Form in all competitions (most recent first) – WWDLDLWWDW

Manager Darren Ferguson was really pleased with the performance of his side, speaking to doncasterrooversfc.co.uk on Thursday “I was delighted with last weekend, the most dominant we have been for a while, it was timely and we showed a real threat going forward, playing on the front foot. Collectively they did really well”.

  • Home Record – P9 W6  D3 L0  F18  A9
  • Best home record in the division
  • Only Porstmouth (21) have scored more at home
  • Last home games (most recent first) – WDDWWDD
  • Last home league defeat came 1-0 loss to Blackpool, 28/03/16

Mandeville netted the winner a week on from changing the game away at Exeter with Ferguson happy with his performance levels, “He has a real believe that he deserved a start, he has lot that doubt, he warrants a shirt but that it the challenge for everyone to perform to a level where they stay in the team regardless of who returns to the team”

  • Only team in League Two to score in every league match
  • One of two teams in the football league to net in every match (Fleetwood)
  • Only failed to score in one of their 22 games this season (EFL trophy vs Port Vale)
  • Have scored 2 or more in seven of their last eight games – including their last four games
  • Have scored 2 or more in 11 of their 17 league games – six of their nine home matches

Sitting in the automatic promotion places, Ferguson is pleased with his sides points haul but knows there is still improvement for his side. After the three sides around Rovers all dropped points on Tuesday the former Peterborough boss knows that Saturday is a crucial game for his side. “The important thing come 5 o clock is get a win if we can. It is a key fixture, we want to put ourselves in the best possible position for the game in hand next week. We can be in a good position cutting the gap to two points before playing the league leaders”.

  • Only kept one clean sheet in their last six
  • Kept six in their 22 games this season – four have come at home
  • Only kept one clean sheet in their last nine league matches
  • Kept two clean sheets in their last four home games
  • Have not conceded a goal from open play in the league since 29th October

John Marquis hit his tenth of the season last weekend and is really enjoying his football. Marquis spent time on loan last season gaining promotion with Northampton and after his summer move to the Keepmoat he is hoping to do the same. Speaking after hitting double figures to doncasterrovers.co.uk “I want to playing in a winning side, playing regularly and enjoying my football which I am doing at the moment. My target was to play and force my way into the managers plans, it has happened so touch wood it continues”.

  • Six of their 10 wins and four of their six home wins have been by one goal
  • Four of their last five league wins have been by 1 goal
  • Both teams have scored in 13 of their 17 league games including six of their nine home games
  • No team in League Two has led for more minutes than Doncaster (645), led for 387 minutes at home
  • Only had seven different scorers

Marquis spent the first half of the season at Orient last season and joins defender Mathieu Baudry in facing his former club. Baudry spent four seasons at Orient before moving to Donny in the summer and is loving working under Ferguson. Speaking to doncasterrovers.co.uk on Thursday “I am in full admiration of him, he is too good for this level. He gives you so many tools to play and everyone knows what they have got to do. I enjoy coming to training to learn and work”.

  • No team has scored more goals in the first 15 minutes of matches than Donny
  • Have opened the scoring in five games in the first 15 minutes of matches
  • Have scored nine goals in the last 15 minutes, only Portsmouth (11) have scored more
  • Have netted 14 in the final 30 minutes of matches including – four of their last five goals

Ferguson watched Cavasin’s last game in charge on Tuesday and felt that the change was coming, “we felt that they would do it, the atmosphere on Tuesday made us think it would be the case. Edwards takes over and has had two games already. They played a different formation than they have been playing recently” . He added “it brings a different dynamic to the game, they struggled at home and have been clearly better away. We need to make sure we get to a level where we are very aggressive on and off the ball”.

  • Have won their last seven home games scoring first
  • Last defeat came 19/03/16, 2-1 vs Peterborough

  • Record conceding first – W1  D3  L2   Home D3
  • Only won one of their last 12 home games conceding first – W1  D5  L6

Team News

Leyton Orient will be waiting on the fitness of captain Robbie Weir and Callum Kennedy who both were substituted at half time on Tuesday through illness. Ulrich Nnomo, Yvan Erichot remain doubts while Liam Kelly and Harry Cornick are out through injury. Myles Judd could continue at right following an impressive display on Tuesday with striker Ollie Palmer pushing for a recall.

Doncaster will be without Harry Middleton and Andy Williams who continue their rehab from injury while keeper Ross Etheridge is out with a broken finger. Marko Marosi is fit to play with young keeper Louis Rose on the bench.

“The Perfect Opportunity to Rectify Our Home Performances”

Leyton Orient manager Alberto Cavasin is hoping that his side bounce back from a 2-1 home defeat to Blackpool on Saturday as they host bottom of the table Exeter tomorrow night. The O’s set a new club record of seven consecutive home league defeats on Saturday but Cavasin is hoping that Tuesday is the perfect chance to make amends.

  • Sit 20th on 18 points- just two above the relegation zone
  • League Record – P17 W5 D3 L9  F20  A22
  • Form in last eight (league) – W2 D1 L5  F8  A10
  • Form in all competitions (most recent first) – LWLLLWLLLD

Speaking after the loss on Saturday to leytonorient.com Tuesday allows us to go straight away and look to make amends on the pitch for today’s loss. With the match being four days away it is the perfect opportunity for us to rectify our home performances The O’s fell behind when Jamille Matt outmuscled Yvan Erichot off the ball before conceding another set piece goal in the second half. Paul McCallum pulled a goal back late on but couldn’t prevent another home defeat.

  • Kept only one clean sheet in their last nine games (3-0 vs Colchester)
  • Only kept three clean sheets in 22 games this season
  • Only kept one clean sheet in 11 home games this season
  • Have conceded at least once in their last eight home games
  • Conceded twice in four of their last five home games

Defender Tom Parkes was baffled that his side fell to another defeat, speaking to BBC London post match, “personally I don’t understand, we know as a team it is not good enough, especially with the team we have got. It is a good team but at the moment the results are not coming our way, hopefully we can turn it around on Tuesday at home to Exeter”.

  • Orient have dropped six points in the last 15 minutes of matches
  • They would sit 9th if games ended on 75 minutes

It was the 15th set piece goal Orient had conceded this term with the much maligned zonal marking again criticised on Saturday. Parkes was disappointed with this but revealed that he didn’t know how many goals they had conceded in the same manner, “I didn’t know we had conceded that many, as a defender that is disappointing for me. The main thing is if you look at goals conceded around most of the leagues, a lot are from set pieces”.

  • Four of the last seven goals conceded at home have been from set pieces
  • Have only led in one of their nine home league matches – 70 mins/990 mins
  • Have only led for 127 minutes at home this season

Parkes continued “we need to make sure we are strong and put our bodies on the line and stop them going in. Hopefully now we can notice that, I will tell the boys that and hopefully Tuesday we can get it right”

  • Only one of their last five matches has seen both teams scores
  • Five of their eight home defeats have been at least two goals
  • Only scored in both halves in four of their 17 league games – only one home

It was a similar story with Orient failing to build on a 3-0 victory at Colchester last weekend with Cavasin stating “of course we wanted to build on the win at Colchester and although we kept fighting until the end we ultimately conceded two goals from two episodes which proved costly”. He added “we didn’t manage to make the most of our opportunities and this is part of the problem we have encountered at home”

  • Orient have only won back to back games once this season (league), two in all competitions
  • Only scored in four of the nine home league matches
  • Only scored two or more in five of their 22 home matches in 2016
  • Only scored two or more in three of their 20 home league matches in 2016
  • Failed to score in eight of their last 13 matches and four of their last six home games

Despite double training sessions and a change of management, Orient still remain unable to pick up positive results at Brisbane Road but Parkes highlighted that the players have no reason to be nervous, “I don’t see why we should be nervous, we have good players in Jay Simpson and Nigel and a good captain in Robbie. With the results we have had it can put pressure on you a bit but we feel no pressure when we set foot on the pitch”.

  • Home record – P9 W1 D0  L8  F6  A13
  • Only Exeter (1) have taken less points at home than Orient in League Two
  • Orient have the third worse home record in the top four English Leagues with only Swansea (2) and Exeter (1) picking up less points
  • Only Exeter (3) have scored less home goals than Orient (6)
  • Last home games all competitions (most recent first) – LLLLLLWL

Orient have only scored first in one of their last 13 matches with Parkes stating that it is important that if they concede first to keep it tight, “if we do go one down, we have got to concentrate on not conceding again and keep doing what we do best which is to try and play football”.

  • The last three games Orient have conceded first at home they have conceded at least twice along with five of the last seven home games
  • Record scoring first – W4 D2 L0  Home W1
  • Only scored first in one of the nine home league matches
  • Orient have won 14 of their 16 games scoring first
  • Orient have only lost one of their last 22 league games scoring first – W15 D6 L1
  • Their last defeat came against Exeter 16/01/16
  • Only lost one of their last 16 home league games scoring first – W12 D3 L1

With bottom of the table Exeter the opposition tomorrow, Cavasin knows that a solution needs to found quickly in order to pick up positive results at home. Parkes knows that it is a “massive game, every game we play is massive, hopefully we train hard and work hard in order to get a big three points”.

  • Record conceding first – W1 L9   home L8
  • Orient have only won one of their last 21 games conceding first – W1 D2  L18
  • Orient have only won one of their last 23 home games conceding first                                 (Portsmouth 3-2 , 26/12/15)    – W1  D4 L18
  • Orient have lost their last 13 home games conceding first
  • Only scoring five goals and failing to score in eight of those games

Exeter arrive in E10 after suffering late heartbreak in a 3-2 defeat at Carlisle on Saturday. The Grecians were leading with a minute to go but two goals in the final minutes by Charlie Wyke and Shaun Miller turn the game on its head. The Grecians prop up the football league with pressure growing on manager Paul Tisdale with the fans trust serving a notice on his contract.

  • Sit 24th on 16 points – one point from safety
  • League Record – P17 W5 D1  L11  F19  A25
  • Form in last 8 (league) – W2  D1  L5  F11  A12
  • Form in all competitions (most recent first) – LLDLWLWW

Despite defeat, manager Tisdale was upbeat on his sides performance at second placed Carlisle. Speaking to exetercityfc.co.ukthis is our game, we feel we played well today, we gave everything and we deserved at least a draw against a very good side and we just have to keep going”.

  • Without a clean sheet in their last four games
  • Kept only one in their last eight and two in their last 11 matches
  • Kept two clean sheets in their last five away matches
  • Only kept four clean sheets in 23 games in all competitions
  • Conceded at least twice in five of their last seven matches – only one of these was away

Exeter have been foul of a few dodgy decisions by officials but Tisdale knows that when you are at the bottom, luck doesn’t go your way, “we feel hard done by, by that poor offside decision, it could have easily been us winning. It just seems to be the way things are going for us at the moment but we have got to keep our heads up because the players did very well”.

  • Have scored in their last eight matches – including their last three away matches
  • Scored in seven of their 10 away matches this term and 17 of their 22 away games in 2016
  • Have scored two or more in 66% of their away matches – 6 of 9
  • Last failed to score on 08/10/16: 0-0 home draw with Grimsby
  • Only seven of their 17 league matches has seen both teams score – the lowest amount in the league
  • Scored in both halves in three of their nine away league matches

Late goals have been a major problem for the Grecians this term, losing their last two games with goals in the final 15 minutes of matches. However Tisdale knows that his side need to defend to the end, “you have to defend at the end when a team puts plenty of players up front and goes for it. They are entitled to do that and we have to respond and we did”. He added “it is a cruel game but we have got to keep going because we deserved something, we absolutely deserved something”.

  • Only Colchester (10) and Newport (9) have conceded more goals than Exeter (8) in the final 15 minutes of matches
  • Only Colchester (8) have dropped more points than Exeter (7) in the final 15 minutes of games
  • If games ended on 75 minutes, Exeter would sit 11th
  • 60% of their goals conceded have come between 0-15 mins and 75-90 mins (15/25)

Without a home win all season, 13 of their 16 league points have come on the road with Tisdale quick to acknowledge the 150 travelling fans for their support on Saturday, “i have to thank them enormously, they make huge efforts to travel and support us. They stuck behind us and were clapping the boys off at the end”

  • Away record – P9  W5  D0  L4   F16  A12
  • They have the 4th best away record in League Two with only Plymouth (21) taking more points away from home
  • Only Doncaster (17) and Hartlepool (17) have scored more away goals that Exeter
  • Last away games in all competitions (most recent first) – LWWLWLWLWL

Even though the Grecian sit bottom of the football league, Tisdale feels that his sides performances have been good. A win at Orient tomorrow night could see them move out of the relegation places, “I think we have had only one bad performance in the last seven or eight games so the performances are there but we have to turn these into wins”.

  • Record scoring first – W4  L3    away W4  L1
  • Scored first in their last three league matches and four of their last five in all competitions
  • Scored first in five of their nine away league matches
  • Lost their last two matches scoring first
  • Exeter have only lost one of their last 29 away matches scoring first – W22 D6 L1
  • That defeat was on Saturday, their last league defeat scoring first was 25/01/14, 2-1 vs Wimbledon
  • Recording Conceding first – W1  L8      away W1 (Barnet)  L3
  • Lost 11 of their last 13 matches conceding first
  • Lost seven of their last eight away league matches conceding first

Hapless O’s Set New Club Record

Goals from Jamille Matt and Tom Aldred inflicted Leyton Orient’s seventh consecutive home defeat – a new club record. Blackpool took the lead when Matt out muscled O’s defender Yvan Erichot before firing beyond Alex Cisak. Orient struggled to create going forward, fallin two behind when their failure to deal with set piece struck once more when Tom Aldred headed home. Substitute Paul McCallum did halve the deficit a minute from time but Orient fell to a new club record of – Seven straight home defeats.

Following their 3-0 away win at Colchester last weekend, O’s manager Alberto Cavasin named an unchanged side, continuing with a midfield diamond. Ollie Palmer continued to be partnered by Jay Simpson who was looking to build on his brace last week.

orient-diamond-vs-col-u

Blackpool who were unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions also remained unchanged from their 4-0 home victory over Notts County. Manager Gary Bowyer continued with Jamille Matt and Kyle Vassell, who were involved in all four goals last weekend. Former O’s loanee Jack Payne started against his former club in midfield.

blackpool-formation

In a quiet opening period, neither side were able to create any clear cut openings with Nigel Atagana having a tame shot at Sam Slocombe while Danny Pugh volleyed over from distance. Blackpool were trying to find Kyle Vassell in behind the Orient back line and the former Posh striker was a continued nuisance for the home side.

Brad Potts had the first clear cut opening when Kevin Mellor won the ball on the half way line, the ball was played to Potts who made a run between Nicky Hunt and Yvan Erichot. Potts’s touch took him on to goal but home keeper Alex Cisak smothered the ball behind for a corner.

Orient attacking play was using Ollie Palmer as a target man with runners off him in attack. O’s thought they had taken the lead when a quick break saw Gavin Massey exchange passes with Jay Simpson but the former Colchester man strayed offside.

Blackpool’s attacking quartet were exchanging positions with Colin Daniel net to try his luck after Robbie Weir’s poor clearance but the wide man could only fire over. However, the Tangerines did take the lead when a ball forward saw Jamille Matt brush O’s defender Yvan Erichot with ease, before cutting back and firing home.

The goal seemed to wake Orient up and went agonizingly close to drawing level but Gavin Massey’s effort crashed off of the post. Andy Taylor saw a free kick saved for the visitors before Kyle Vassell snatched a volley when he was left unmarked at the back post following a corner.

Michael Collins was lively for the home side going forward and was looking to link play but drifted offside when played through. His interchange around the box with Simpson was started to find space but Orient’s best chance came when a well worked corner fell to Tom Parkes but the defender volleyed his effort over.

Blackpool continued to be threatening on the attack with Colin Daniel seeing an effort blocked just before half time. The second half started as the first half ended with the away side a threat in behind with than man Vassell a constant outlet for Blackpool.

Alan Dunne replaced the injured Yvan Erichot for the home side and nearly created an opening for Orient but his right wing cross was blocked. The pattern of the second half was set with Blackpool sitting back, hitting Orient on the counter. Vassell could have added to his 10 goals already this season but after a run down the right, he cut back on to his right foot but Cisak saved well down to his right.

But surprise surprise, Orient fell two behind from guess what? Oh another set piece their 15 goal conceded from  a set piece this season and their eighth in their last six matches. Even with all 11 men back for the corner, Tom Aldred was allowed acres of space t head home at the front.

With Blackpool high in confidence, they continued to find space going forward with Vassell firing just wide from distance while right back Kevin Mellor narrowly struck over when venturing forward. The link up between Potts, Matt and Vassell was very good with all three linking up but Matt’s goalbound header was blocked by Tom Parkes.

Orient threw on Sandro Semedo and Paul McCallum in search of a way back into the game which they got just a minute from time. Following a good move, Alan Dunne’s cross found the Paul McCallum who headed home. Orient pushed for an equaliser but Robbie Weir saw his effort blocked after getting on the end of a Paul McCallum flick on.

Well, we all knew the outcome of yesterday’s match before it even kicked off, it was envitable win away one week, lose at home the next. Why? Well when there appears no ability to actually work out how the opposition will play against you, there will always be a problem. Any body who has watched Blackpool this season will understand that they look for balls over the top and have strong, powerful strikers. According to Orient this doesn’t matter. I mean they scored two identical goals this season already. Just look below:

Yes, we won last weekend at Colchester but was that as playing well or Colchester playing very bad. Yvan Erichot stated on monday “However Erichot seems the perfect fit when teams decide to go direct against you but when a team will play balls down the channel and force your defenders towards their own goal, this is where the problem arise” Footballanalyst.net

The problems did arise and too many of them, then when a team has an outlet such as Kyle Vassell they will always look threatening in attack. He was a constant menace against Orient and was the perfect foil for Jamille Matt in attack.

Then the substitution choices keeping Robbie Weir on and taking Michael Collins off, I mean Collins was our most influential player going forward in attack. Weir seemed to have an off day last week with a good display, falling back to his poor standards of this season.

With bottom of the table Exeter arriving in E10 on Tuesday, it already has the feeling of a six pointer even at this stage of the season. A side that somehow has a worse home record than Orient, how is that possible? Before travelling to free scoring Doncaster next weekend when John Marquis is looking on with joy at the amount of space he will be allowed next week.

“Get Results and Build some Confidence”

Leyton Orient striker Jay Simpson is hoping last weekend’s 3-0 win at Colchester United is the confidence booster his side needed. The O’s climbed out of the bottom two following the win and will be hoping to build on that tomorrow against Blackpool.

  • Sit 19th on 18 points – just two points above the relegation zone
  • League Record – P16 W5 D3 L8  F19  A20

Simpson who netted his first Orient goals since April was happy to be back on the score sheet “it always nice to score and get off the mark, hopefully a lot more will follow”. Speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today (Friday) Simpson acknowledged it was another summer of transition for the side but “for the first time in a long while their feels a lot of believe in the squad”.

  • Form in last eight (league) – W2  D1  L5  F8  A11
  • Form all competitions (most recent first) – WLLLWLLLD

The win saw Orient keep only their second clean sheet of the season and their first in 17 matches with Simpson praising the back five, “it was good to keep a clean sheet, it gives confidence to everyone in the side. Cisak keeps a clean sheet meaning the back four kept the door shut”.

  • Only kept one clean sheet at home
  • Without a clean sheet in their last seven home matches

Simpson’s goal coincided with a change of shape to a 4-4-2 diamond in midfield, something which the O’s striker thought was integral on the day. “The shape allowed me to stay higher up the pitch where I want to be. Saturday we kept a high line with the defense pushing up which helped our attacking play”. He added “when we haven’t been winning, it can be difficult for the players to be brave; it is easy to fall back and drop deeper”.

  • First match in four Orient found the net
  • Only led for 127 minutes at home this season
  • Only led in one of their eight home league matches – 70/720 minutes
  • Failed to score in eight of their last 12 matches – including four of their last five home matches

Orient’s problems this season have come at Brisbane Road where they have lost seven of their eight league matches but manager Alberto Cavasin knows that after last weekend’s win “it is a big chance to build some momentum through results”. Speaking to leytonorient.com earlier today “our away record has not been so bad but we have to start winning at home. Our objective is to put together a series of positive results, showing what the squad is capable of”.

  • Home Record – P8  W1  L7  F5  A11
  • Last homes (most recent first) – LLLLLWLWLL
  • Only Exeter (1) have taken less points at home than Orient
  • Have conceded two or more in three of their last four home matches

With just six points separating 23rd and 7th, Cavasin highlighted “that if we are to fulfill our aim this season we have to replicate our form, if we do that no doubt we will move up the table”. Orient will go level on points with Blackpool if they win tomorrow, “the league is very tight and there are a number of teams on similar points” stated Cavasin. “Very few teams have been able to build momentum”

  • Only three of their 18 points have come at home
  •  Only scored two or more goals in six league matches
  • But have netted three goals in two of their last three league matches

Cavasin was pleased with Simpson’s impact at Colchester last weekend and is keen for him to continue scoring goals “Jay notched his first goals of the season and will play a vital role after being top scorer last season. Hopefully it will start a good run for him and the club”. Orient netted the first goal last weekend, the first time since 10 September and Cavasin was happy with his sides performance “the team showed a lot of character and having started the game well, we build on it. We kept the same mentality throughout and came away with the win which was vital”.

  • Record scoring first – W4 D2 L0  Home W1
  • Won 14 of their last 16 games scoring first
  • Only scored first in two of their ten home matches this season
  • Last weekend was first match in 12 scoring first

Blackpool will prove tough opponents tomorrow afternoon with Cavasin aware of the damage that the Tangerines could do”they will be very dangerous, results have been better at home rather than away but the latest win shows what they are capable of”.

  • Scored 13 of their 19 goals in the second half
  • Conceded 14 goals from set pieces this season
  • Three of their last five goals conceded at home have been from set pieces
  • Have dropped six points in the last 15 minutes of matches – no other league two has dropped more

Despite being without a home win since August, Simpson is confident of picking up a result “we are confident, we have had a good week, we hope the fans are behind us, they were excellent at Colchester and we hope they continue tomorrow”.

  • Five of their seven home defeats have been by just one goal

The striker is aware that they could look to put the pressure on Orient “it will a lot tougher than last Saturday, they will come down here looking at our home form. They will hope to put us under pressure and for the home fans to turn”. He added “it will be a tough game, they won 4-0 last weekend and are scoring goals but are not so great on their travels”

  • Record conceding first – W1 L8  home L7
  • Only won one of their last 20 games conceding first – W1  D2  L17
  • Lost their last 13 home league games conceding first
  • Last home win when conceding first was 26/12/15 : 3-2 vs Portsmouth

Blackpool arrive in E10 following a 4-0 home win over Notts County last weekend. The Tangerines are looking to bounce back from back to back relegations and are in a good position to do so. Gary Bowyer’s men are five unbeaten in all competitions and will be looking for back to back league wins with victory over Orient tomorrow.

  • Sit 9th on 21 points
  • League Record – P16 W5  D6 L5  F27  A19
  • Only Plymouth (28) and Doncaster (33) have scored more league goals
  • Form in last eight (league) – W3 D3 L2 F16 A10 (Only Plymouth scored more in that period)
  • Form all competitions (most recent first) – WDWDWLDLL

Bowyer who was appointed in the summer at Bloomfield Road was pleased with his sides performance over County but is keen not to get carried away. Speaking to blackpoolfc.co.uk post match “it was a very good performance from us but still felt there are areas we can improve in. We are not going to get carried away, we need to be sensible about it, it takes times to build. We are by far a finished article and have to keep building”.

  • Kept two clean sheets in their last three, both at home
  • Those two clean sheets are there only ones in their last 13 games
  • Kept five clean sheets in 22 games this season
  • Only kept one in 11 matches away from home and only 3 in 22 away games in 2016
  • Without a clean sheet in their last seven away games

The former Blackburn boss was particular happy with the performance of his two strikers: Kyle Vassell and Jamille Matt. The pair were involved in all four goals with Bowyer stating “the front two were a real handful, they were a real threat and am delighted for them”.

  • Kyle Vassell and Brad Potts have been involved in 66% of Blackpool’s league goals
  • 21 of their 27 goals have been scored by attacking midfielders or strikers                   – Potts 5, Vassell 5, Matt 1, Gnanduillet 3, Daniel 3, Cullen 1

Kyle Vassell netted his tenth of the season with Bowyer always keen for continued improvement from his players “anyone who gets double figures at this stage of the season has done well but we want more from him. We think there is more to come from his as well, he is only getting better”

  • All five of their league wins have been by at least two goals
  • All five defeats have been by just one goal
  • Both teams have scored in 10 of their 16 games – including eight of their last nine league matches
  • Blackpool have scored in both halves in six of their 16 matches

Ahead of the visit to Brisbane Road, Bowyer stated to blackpoolfc.co.uk “they play a huge role, I don’t know which one I want to mark or play against. Both present problems for defenders in different ways and it is difficult to combat them”.

  • Scored in their last seven matches
  • Scored two or more in four of their last five games
  • Only failed to score in four games this season – three of 16 league games – all away from home
  • Scored two more more in 50% of their league matches this season

Blackpool’s major flaw this season has been their away form where they have only collected six of their 21 points. Bowyer acknowledges and knows it needs to improve “we have to address our away form, it is as simple as that, performances have been good but the actual outcomes of games have been disappointing” He added “we have talked about it, we want to put it right and Saturday presents us with an opportunity”

  • Away Record – P8 W1 D3 L4  F11 A12
  • Only Wycombe (3) have taken less points on their travels
  • Last away results (most recent first) – DDLLLDLW
  • Only away win came 3-0 at Yeovil

Midfielder Jack Payne echoes his managers thoughts on taking the season game by game but highlighted that it is a massive week for the club. Speaking to blackpoolfc.co.uk “we all know it is a massive week this week, we are not thinking to far ahead. We have a game Saturday and hopefully we get the win”.

  • Have scored 17 of their 28 goals in the second half – including seven of their last 11
  • Only Luton (18) have scored more
  • 33% of their total goals have come between minutes 45-60
  • Conceded eight goals in the last 30 minutes – 7 of them away
  • They have dropped five points from winning positions away from home

Payne made the move north after a season on loan at tomorrow’s opponents Leyton Orient last season and is enjoying his football, “winning breeds confidence, the training stays the same or gets better, we go into games thinking if we play well, we have enough to beat anybody”. With a strong squad assembled at Bloomfield Road, Payne has to be on top of his game week in week out “we have got competition everywhere not just in one position. We have two or three in every position, if you have got the shirt you have to play well to keep it”.

With Orient already having two managers this season, Payne illustrated that it was a difficult place to be last season, “I was on loan there last season, we had three managers, it was hard because everyone knew what was going on, the fans knew but they were really good with us, it was a hard place to be. They got relegated after being in the play offs, it is a good club and hopefully they can get up the table”

  • Record scoring first – W4 D2 L3   Away  W1 D2  L3
  • Only won two of their last five games scoring first
  • Only Hartlepool average less points when scoring first

With the Tangerines sitting just a point outside the play offs, they are well in the hunt for promotion but Bowyer explains the league is very close, “their is so much inconsistency in the league at the moment. Plymouth are running away with it but there are plenty of teams sitting in the play offs who haven’t won for a while”.

  • Record conceding first – W1  D3  L3    away W0  D1  L1
  • Only win came with a 4-2 home win over Doncaster
  • Blackpool have only won 1 of their last 80 league matches conceding first                 – W1  D14  L65
  • Blackpool are without an away league win when conceding first since 09/03/13 2-1 vs Watford
  • A run of 44 games – W0  D7 L37

Why not Inside Blackpool

Team News

Orient will be without Jense Janse (shoulder), Ulrich Nnomo (ankle) and Harry Cornick (groin) who all remain sidelined while Liam Kelly continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. Orient could name an unchanged side with Simpson hoping to build on his brace last weekend.
